"Bacteria in Crave Brothers' Les Frères product has already killed at least one person." (Via CNN) "It was sold in at least 30 states and should be thrown away immediately. Crave Brothers cheese, be careful." (Via Fox News) According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, five people with the same strain of listeriosis have been hospitalized across four midwestern states. Listeriosis is a serious illness caused from ingesting bacteria known as listeria — which can be found in poorly processed deli meats and unpasteurized milk products. Listeriosis causes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting diarrhea and abdominal pain, along with fatigue and muscle aches. It also may produce symptoms similar to meningitis, such as stiffening of the neck and frontal headache and fever — which can progress to inflammation of the brain resulting in confusion and delirium. (Via Forbes) It is particularly dangerous for those with weakened immune systems — such as the elderly or very young. It's also particularly dangerous for expectant mothers — where the illness often results in miscarriages or stillborn births. (Via ABC) One the five hospitalized is believed to have suffered a miscarriage as a result of contracting the illness. The Crave Brothers company has voluntarily recalled several cheeses made on or before July 1.
