experience of my life.

I was in the third year of my seven-year undergraduate degree.

I took a couple victory laps in there.

And I was on a college choir tour up in Northern California,

and we had stopped for the day after all day on the bus,

and we were relaxing next to this beautiful

idyllic lake in the mountains.

And there were crickets and birds and frogs making noise,

and as we sat there, over the mountains coming in

from the north were these Steven Spielbergian clouds

rolling toward us,

スピルバーグの映画に 出てきそうな雲が

and as the clouds got about halfway over the valley,

so help me God, every single animal in that place

雲が谷に 差し掛かった時

stopped making noise at the same time.

(Whoosh) This electric hush, as if they could sense what was about to happen.

And then the clouds came over us, and then,

瞬時に訪れた静けさ——何が起ころうと しているのか 皆知っているかのようでした

boom! This massive thunderclap, and sheets of rain.

そして雲が 頭上まで来たとき

It was just extraordinary, and when I came back home

ドカーン！ 凄まじい雷鳴がして 激しく雨が降り出しました

I found a poem by the Mexican poet Octavio Paz,

すごいとしか 言いようのないものでした

and decided to set it to music,

帰宅後に見つけた オクタビオ・パスの詩に

a piece for choir called "Cloudburst,"

曲を付け 『豪雨』という題で

which is the piece that we'll perform for you in just a moment.

合唱曲を 作ることにしました

Now fast forward to just three years ago.

すぐ後で お聞かせします

(Music) And we released to YouTube this,

時を経て ３年前のことになりますが

the Virtual Choir Project,

YouTubeで この「バーチャル合唱団」 プロジェクトを

185 singers from 12 different countries.

You can see my little video there conducting these people,

12カ国から185人の歌手が 参加しています

alone in their dorm rooms

小さな映像の私の指揮で 彼らがそれぞれ—

or in their living rooms at home.

Two years ago, on this very stage, we premiered

Virtual Choir 2,

2,052 singers from 58 different countries,

this time performing a piece that I had written called "Sleep."

And then just last spring we released Virtual Choir 3,

"Water Night," another piece that I had written,

this time nearly 4,000 singers from 73 different countries.

And when I was speaking to Chris about the future

of Virtual Choir and where we might be able to take this,

he challenged me to push the technology as far as we possibly could.

Could we do this all in real time?

that is what we are going to attempt today.

The first half will be performed by the live singers here on stage.

I'm joined by singers from Cal State Long Beach,

Cal State Fullerton and Riverside Community College,

some of the best amateur choirs in the country, and —

and in the second half of the piece,

the virtual choir will join us, 30 different singers

Now, we've pushed the technology as far as it can go,

but there's still less than a second of latency,

but in musical terms, that's a lifetime.

So what I've done is, I've adapted "Cloudburst"

so that it embraces the latency

and the performers sing into the latency

instead of trying to be exactly together.

So with deep humility, and for your approval,

[birdbeaks of light pecking open]

青い太陽 緑の旋風

[pomegranate stars.]

光のくちばしが つつき開く

[But tell me, burnt earth, is there no water?]

ザクロの星々

[Only blood, only dust,]

教えてほしい 焼けた地よ 水はないのか？

[only naked footsteps on the thorns?]

血ばかり 塵ばかり

[The rain awakens...]

棘を踏んだ 足跡ばかり

[We must sleep with open eyes,]

雨が目を覚ます･･･

[we must dream with our hands,]

目を開けて 眠らなければならない

[we must dream the dreams of a river seeking its course,]

手で夢を 見なければならない

[of the sun dreaming its worlds.]

道を探す川の夢を 夢見なければならない

[We must dream aloud,]

自らの世界を夢見る 太陽の夢を

[we must sing till the song puts forth roots,]

声に出して 夢見なければならない

[trunk, branches, birds, stars.]

歌わなければならない 歌が根を張り—

[We must find the lost word,]

幹 枝 鳥 星になるまで

[and remember what the blood,]

失われた言葉を 見つけねばならない

[the tides, the earth, and the body say,]

血が 潮が 大地が 肉体が

[and return to the point of departure...]

語ることを記憶し
