Yuzuru Hanyu was the 2010 World Junior Champion.
This is his second year in the senior circuit.
He's an immensely talented, 17 year-old
In the GPF in the Québec City, he finished just off the podium in 4th.
He popped his lutz in the short program and that sees him
sitting in 7th place, 8 points back of the podium
He's a bit unpredictable
one of my favorites skaters for obvious reasons,
one of them being 3A-3T across the end of the rink,
also because you never know what he's going to do
Super unpredictable like I said, whenever he does take a fall
it's absolutely spectacular
legs, arms every where
That's not what he's focusing on right now
It's four revolutions and it's called the quad
- That was huge. - It was easy. Wow!
He has been talking himself, dancing around with his Walkman,
doing his program before the competition, psyching himself up
It's a sellout crowd here in Nice
and this audience is just eating it up
Take a second here, after these first few jumping passes
and let the adrenaline go away for a second or two
Get back down to business
That was amazing, he was able to save that jump
deep knee bend
I spoke to him during shows in Japan earlier this year
I asked him, "Are you an athlete or an artist?"
He said, "I am an artistic athlete.
When you say you never know
what to expect
expect the unexpected
watch this 3A
- 3A-3T - What a recovery!
- Kids got talent - Oh my God!
With a scream and a couple of fist pumps
He's channeling all his energy into this footwork,
and the audience is helping him out.
one jump left, the emotion is there but legs seem going down up.
Good boy!
Well, at the beginning of this free skate, he was 7 points off the podium
seemed like a mile away
now he just got a whole lot closer. Look out!
Super star is born.
They're out of their seats here in Nice.
the former world junior champion with his sight
set on the senior world podium
Tracy, you said 8 points a long way back
But
this is figure skating, and anything is possible here.
It's sport
And anything is possible,
that's why we collect together the best in the world
to see what would happen on that special day
This kid made it happen today.
Yuzuru Hanyu had the skate of his life today,
And look the score, a new season's best
by a whopping margin, 13 points
And only one skater has beaten that score this year,
and he's only beaten it once
And that's Patrick Chan
These are incredible numbers,
and the guys behind him getting ready to skate know it!
