We are a group of twelve and thirteen-year-olds

カナダの12歳から13歳の子どもたちの集まりで

trying to make a difference:

今の世界を変えるためにがんばっています

We raised all the money to come here ourselves

自分たちで費用を全て集め

to come five thousand miles to tell you adults you must change your ways.

皆さん大人に　考え方を変えてほしいとお願いするため １万キロの旅をしてきました

Coming up here today, I have no hidden agenda.

今日の私の話には ウラもオモテもありません

I am fighting for my future.

私が環境運動をしているのは 私自身の未来のためだからです

Losing my future is not like losing an election

自分の未来を失うのは 選挙で負けたり

or a few points on the stock market.

株で損したりするのとはわけが違います

I am here to speak for all generations to come.

ここに来て話をするのは 未来の全ての子どもたちのためです

I am here to speak on behalf of the starving children

ここに来て話をするのは 誰にも叫びを聞いてもらえない

around the world whose cries go unheard.

世界中の飢えに苦しむ子どもたちのためです

I am here to speak for the countless animals

ここに来て話をするのは 行き場を失い

dying across this planet because they have nowhere left to go.

世界中で死にかけている 無数の動物たちのためです

I am afraid to go out in the sun now

太陽のもとに出るのが　私は怖い

because of the holes in the ozone.

オゾン層に穴が空いているから

I am afraid to breathe the air

呼吸するのも　私は怖い

because I don't know what chemicals are in it.

大気にどんな化学物質が入っているか 知らないから

I used to go fishing in Vancouver, my home, with my dad

父とよく故郷バンクーバーで釣りをしました

until just a few years ago we found the fish full of cancers.

数年前、体中ガンでおかされた魚に出会うまでは

And now we hear about animals and plants

また　動物や植物が 毎日のように絶滅していくのを

going extinct every day - vanishing forever.

私たちは耳にします 彼らが戻ることは　永遠にありません

In my life, I have dreamt of seeing the great herds of wild animals,

私が夢みてきたのは いつか野生の動物たちの群れや

jungles and rainforests full of birds and butterflies,

たくさんの鳥や蝶が舞う ジャングルを見ることでした

but now I wonder if they will even exist for my children to see.

でも次の世代は　そういう動物たちの存在さえ 見られなくなるのではないか？

Did you have to worry about these little things when you were my age?

皆さんが私くらいの歳のときに そんなことを心配しましたか

All this is happening before our eyes and yet we act

こんな大変なことが目の前で起きているのに

as if we have all the time we want and all the solutions.

私たちはまるで 時間も解決策もあるように構えています

I'm only a child and I don't have all the solutions,

まだ私は子どもで この危機をどう解決したらいいのか分かりません

but I want you to realize, neither do you!

でも　あたたち大人にも知ってほしいのは 皆さんにも良い解決策なんて無いことです

You don't know how to fix the holes in our ozone layer.

オゾン層の穴をどうふさぐのか ご存じないでしょう

You don't know how to bring salmon back up a dead stream.

死んだ川にどうサケを呼びもどすのかも 分かりませんよね

You don't know how to bring back an animal now extinct.

絶滅した動物をどうやって 生きかえらせるのかも　分かりません

And you can't bring back the forests

今や砂漠となった場所にどうやって

that once grew where there is now desert.

森をよみがえらせるのか　それも知りません

If you don't know how to fix it, please stop breaking it!

直し方を知らないのなら 壊し続けるのは　もうやめてください

Here, you may be delegates of your governments,

ここでは　皆さんは政府や企業や団体の代表でしょう

business people, organizers, reporters or politicians

あるいは　報道関係者か政治家かもしれない

- but really you are mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers,

でも実は皆さんも　誰かの母であり 父であり、姉妹・兄弟であり

aunts and uncles - and all of you are someone's child.

叔母・叔父で そして誰もが　誰かの子どもです

I'm only a child yet I know we are all part of a family,

私はまだ子どもですが　私たち皆が 一つの大きな家族の一員であることを知っています

five billion strong, in fact, 30 million species strong

50億以上の人間の　いや実は 3千万種の生物からなる大家族です

and borders and governments will never change that.

国境や各国政府が分け隔てようとしても これを変えることは出来ません

I'm only a child yet I know we are all in this together

私は子どもですが みんながこの大家族の一員であり

and should act as one single world towards one single goal.

一つの目標に向け心を一つにして 行動しなければならないことを知っています

In my anger, I am not blind, and in my fear,

私は怒っていますが 自分を見失ってはいません

I am not afraid to tell the world how I feel.

私は怖いけれど 自分の気持ちを世界中に伝えることは恐れません

In my country, we make so much waste,

私の国でのむだ遣いは　ひどいものです

we buy and throw away, buy and throw away,

買っては捨て　また買っては捨てています

and yet northern countries will not share with the needy.

浪費しつづける北の国々は 南の国々と富を分かち合おうとしません

Even when we have more than enough,

十二分に物があるときでさえ

we are afraid to share, we are afraid to let go some of our wealth.

自分たちの富を ほんの少しでも手ばなすのが怖いのです

In Canada, we live the privileged life,

カナダでは恵まれた生活が送れます

with plenty of food, water and shelter -

食べ物、水、住まいは豊富で

we have watches, bicycles, computers and television sets.

時計、自転車、パソコン、テレビ…

The list could go on for two days.

持っているものを数えたら２日かかるでしょう

Two days ago here in Brazil, we were shocked

２日前　ここブラジルでショックを受けました

when we spent some time with some children living on the streets.

路上生活の子どもたちと出会ったときのことです

This is what one child told us:

子どもの一人が次のように言いました

"I wish I was rich

「ぼくが金持ちだったらなぁ

and if I were, I would give all the street children

家のない子すべてに、食べもの、着るもの

food, clothes, medicines, shelter and love and affection."

薬、住む場所、そして優しさと愛情をあげるのに」

If a child on the street who has nothing, is willing to share,

何も持っていない路上の子どもが 分かち合うことを考えているのに

why are we who have everything still so greedy?

何でも持っている私たちがこんなに 欲が深いのは　なぜなんでしょう

I can't stop thinking that these are children my own age,

これら子どもたちが　私と同じくらいの歳だということが 忘れられません

that it makes a tremendous difference where you are born,

どこで生れたかによって　全く人生が違ってしまう

that I could be one of those children living in the Favellas of Rio;

私だって　リオの貧民街の子どもとして 生まれたかも知れないのです

I could be a child starving in Somalia;

ソマリアの飢えた子どもか

a victim of war in the Middle East or a beggar in India.

中東の戦争で犠牲者か インドの物乞いだったかも知れない

I'm only a child yet I know

私はまだ子どもだけど　知っています

if all the money spent on war

戦争に使われているお金を全部

was spent on finding environmetal answers,

環境問題の改善 貧困の解消

ending poverty and finding treaties,

条約の追求に使えば

what a wonderful place this earth would be!

この地球はすばらしい星になるでしょう

At school, even in kindergarten,

学校では　いや幼稚園でさえ

you teach us how to behave in the world.

世の中でどうふるまうべきか　教えられます

You teach us: not to fight with others,

争いをしないこと

to work things out, to respect others,

話し合いで解決すること 他人を尊重すること

to clean up our mess, not to hurt other creatures,

散らかしたら自分で片付けること 生き物をむやみに傷つけないこと

to share - not be greedy.

分かち合うこと そして欲ばらないこと

Then why do you go out and do the things you tell us not to do?

なのになぜ　皆さんは 私たちにするなということをしているんですか

Do not forget why you're attending these conferences,

なぜこういう会議に出席しているのかを 忘れないでください

who you're doing this for

誰のためにやっているのかも

- we are your own children.

それはあなたたちの子ども つまり私たちのためです

You are deciding what kind of world we will grow up in.

皆さんは　私たちがどんな世界に 育ち生きていくのかを決めているんです

Parents should be able to comfort their children by saying,

親たちはよく　次のように言って 子どもたちを元気づけます

"Everything's going to be all right;

「だいじょうぶ　すべてうまくいくよ

it's not the end of the world. And we're doing the best we can."

この世の終わりじゃあるまいし　出来るだけのことはするから」

But I don't think you can say that to us anymore.

しかし大人たちはもう　こんな言葉さえ 使うことは出来ないようです

Are we even on your list of priorities?

私たち子どもの未来を 真剣に考えてくれていますか

My dad always says,

父はいつも言っています

"You are what you do, not what you say."

「何を言うかでなく　何をするかで人の価値は決まる」

Well, what you do makes me cry at night.

でも大人がやっていることで 私たちは泣いています

You grown ups say you love us.

大人は子どもに　愛していると言います

But I challenge you,

じゃあ　言わせてください

please make your actions reflect your words.

「その言葉が本当なら、どうか行動で示してください」と
