Hey, Marie.
Hey, Marie.
Hey, it’s Marie Forleo and you are watching MarieTV, the place to be to create a business
and life you love.
Did you know we’ve actually been collecting Q’s using the hashtag #HeyMarie?
And we’ve been cruising around that hashtag for Q’s and we found this great one from
Laura.
Hey, Marie.
Absolutely love this.
Thank you and your team so much for all you do.
My question, I’m launching my new business soon and I catch myself endlessly tweaking.
How do I know when enough is enough and hit the publish button?
Keep on rocking.
With love, Laura.
Great question, Laura.
You know, most of us waste an enormous amount of time, way too much time, trying to get
things perfect.
My advice, in the words of Slick Rick?
Hit it!
That’s right, girl.
You need to hit it.
Hit that publish button now.
Always hit it sooner than you think you could or you should.
I want you to listen up here.
Perfectionism will kill your dreams.
It is the one thing that separates the winners from the wannabes in almost every area of
life.
And, look, none of us are immune to this.
I mean, we can all slip into this mindset if we’re not careful.
I have certainly been guilty of this a lot in the past and it’s something I work to
stay out of every single day.
One of the ways that I do this is by living by this mantra: go for progress, not perfection.
You’ve gotta repeat that all the time.
Now, the goal is to always keep yourself in a growth oriented mindset where you’re focused
on learning and experimentation and getting better and just putting shiz out there.
Now, to be clear, I am not telling you to put crap out into the world or to lower your
standards.
You should always work really hard and you’ve always got to put in your very best effort,
but as for endless tweaking like tweaking, tweaking, tweaking, tweaking, tweaking, all
that is is really a manifestation of procrastination and fear.
And I think Mr. Reid Hoffman got it right when he said, “If you are not embarrassed
by the first version of your product, you have launched too late.”
And I’ve gotta tell you, Laura, I will be the first person to say that the very first
public version of almost everything I do or everything I’ve done, when I look back on
it, it’s actually pretty embarrassing.
I mean, some of it is kind of mortifying.
But, you know what?
I just don't stop.
I am relentless when it comes to learning and growing and evolving and improving and
I think you should be too.
And also, know this, no matter how perfect you think you’ve gotten whatever you're
creating, you’re probably going to change it after you put it out there.
And there’s no shame in growing and improving your work.
No one’s gonna bust you.
No one’s gonna say, like, “Oh, I see you.
You switched your headline font.
I’m telling.”
So for you, Laura, and all my endless tweakers out there, whenever you find yourself getting
sucked into that perfectionism sinkhole, which sucks, I want you to remember this Tweetable.
If you wait to get it perfect, you’ll never get it out there.
#ProgressNotPerfection
That was my A to your Q Laura, and before we wrap up, if you haven’t yet seen our
episode that we did right over here about the power of starting small and sucky, you’ve
gotta watch it now because it’s the perfect side dish to this one.
Thank you Laura for using the hashtag #HeyMarie and for all y’all, keep your Q’s coming.
And now I would love to hear from you.
Can you relate to Laura’s desire to keep tweaking and tweaking and tweaking away?
How do you know when it’s time to just stop tweaking and hit that publish button?
