Today, we are visiting Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto.

今日は京都の伏見稲荷大社を歩いてみましょう。

Fushimi Inari Shrine is the head shrine of Inari.

伏見稲荷大社は、稲荷神社の総本社です。

Inari is a Shinto God of rice, agriculture, and business.

稲荷とは神道の神様の1つで、米・農業・商業を司ると伝えられています。

You will see many red gates and statues of foxes at Fushimi Inari shrine.

伏見稲荷にはたくさんの赤い鳥居と狐の石像が立ち並んでいます。

These are symbols of the God Inari.

これらは稲荷のシンボルとされています。

While the main shrine is located at the foot of Mount Inari,

伏見稲荷大社の本殿は稲荷山の麓にありますが、

all areas on the mountain are considered to be sacred.

稲荷山全体が神域とされています。

There are about 10,000 Torii gates on Mount Inari.

稲荷山には約1万もの鳥居があると言われています。

Among them, Senbon-Torii area is the most picturesque,

その中でも「千本鳥居」は狭い感覚で朱色の鳥居が立ち並び、

as a great number of Torii are standing with very narrow intervals.

最も画趣に富んだ場所です。

All Torii gates were donated by Japanese individuals or companies.

どの鳥居も個人や企業の寄付で建てられています。

On the back of each gate, you can find who the donator was and when the donation was made.

鳥居の後ろには寄付者の名前と、寄付の年月が彫られています。

After passing Senbon-Torii, you will encounter a pair of stone lanterns.

千本鳥居を過ぎると、二つの灯籠が目の前に。

On the lanterns, two Omokaru-Ishi are placed.

灯籠の上には「重軽石」が置かれています。

Visitors make their wishes in front of one of the lanterns, then try to lift the Omokaru-Ishi.

来訪者は石の重さを推測しながら願い事を念じて、重軽石を持ち上げます。

If the weight of the stone is lighter than expected, their wish will be granted.

もし石の重さが思ったより軽ければ、願い事は叶うと言われています。

How high should you climb up the mountain? That's a reasonable question.

稲荷山はどこまで登るべきでしょうか。

A good answer is to "Yotsu-Tsuji".

一つの答えとして、「四つ辻まで」がオススメです。

Yotsu-Tsuji is a resting place on the mountainside, about 45 minutes from the main shrine.

四つ辻は道中にある休憩所で、麓の本殿から45分ほど登ったところに位置しています。

From Yotsu-Tsuji, you can enjoy the nice view of Kyoto city.

四つ辻からは京都市内の絶景が望めますよ。

Fushimi Inari Shrine is open to everyone 24 hours a day.

伏見稲荷大社は24時間、拝観可能です。

At night, all paths and Torii gates get lit up, which give the shrine an eerie, but fairytale-like aspect.

夜になると道と鳥居がライトに照らされて、 ちょっと不気味ですが幻想的な光景が広がります。

It is also a bonus that there are less visitors at night.

夜は来訪者が少ないのも嬉しいですね。

Fushimi Inari Shrine is definitely one of the Must-See spots in Kyoto.

伏見稲荷大社は京都に来たら絶対に訪れたい場所です。

If you have time, it is worth going to Yotsu-Tsuji and enjoy the view of Kyoto city.

もし時間があるならぜひ四つ辻まで登って、京都市の景色を楽しみましょう。

On the other hand, climbing up to the mountaintop is not always recommended,

一方、頂上まで登るべきかは意見が分かれるところです。

since there is not a particularly remarkable view there.

頂上の景色は、あまり良いとは言えませんので。

If you want to do so, you should start at dusk.

もし登るのであれば、夕方頃から登り始めると良いでしょう。

The illumination will eventually add an enjoyable aspect to it.

周りがライトアップされていて、楽しみながら登れですよ。
