I just filmed a really long and draining serious video about race and police brutality so I'm
kind of all about this right now. In my notes, all I have written down is "just go with it,
be loose, and have fun". So I'm just gonna go with it, be loose, and have fun. For International
Women's Day this Sunday, a lot of women on YouTube have been doing this tag called #DearMe
where they give advice to their younger selves. I'm gonna link some of my favorites below
just because they're all from wonderful ladies, and why wouldn't I be excited to share with
you more wonderful ladies? So here is my fun, loose advice to my high school self:
Don't hate on other girls too much. I know it's something that's kind of ingrained in
all women but it's not other girls' fault and you shouldn't hate them simply for not
living up to patriarchal standards.
Don't slut shame other girls because I know it's mainly because you yourself feel pretty
sexually inadequate. You're a virgin in high school and I'm sorry to tell you that that
unfortunately does not change for quite awhile. But don't worry, it happens. And also the
whole idea of virginity is just based off of heteronormative patriarchal constructs
to judge a woman's value and you would have been a lot better off if you had known this
in high school. DOn't base your worth on other guys thinking you're hot. You ARE hot, but
you're so much more than a ~rockin' bod and killer face~. Pay attention to Kate Chopin...Chopan?
I'm sorry you still don't know how to say her name. You read The Awakening for AP Lit
but you don't actually read it you just Sparknotes it and you'll just be left wondering what
kind of feminist mysteries you missed out on. Avoid making out with that one guy junior
year because his tongue is like an octopus and it will swallow your face. He's also gonna
try and make you feel super guilty for not wanting to date him, so try and avoid that
whole "nice guy" persona if possible. Do your Algebra 2 homework because you end up getting
a C in that class and that's the difference between you having a super fucking awesome
honors sash that the lack of makes you feel inadequate for the rest of your life. It's
like I'm kidding, but I'm not really kidding. Don't ignore your mental health issues. I
know that you feel that you might be overreacting or it's not that big of a deal, but it's that
kind of shame and guilt that makes you avoid getting treatment for a really long time,
which in the end actually ends up benefiting you a whole lot. Be proud of being a Ravenclaw
but strive to be a Gryffindor. Your proudest moments are gonna be the ones where you're
courageous and you do things that scare the shit out of you.
You should drink more. Just kidding you shouldn't more. Eh...you should drink more.
The overwhelming question that a lot of multiracial people find themselves asking is "what the
f*ck am I?"
