If you've ever had too much to drink, you've probably noticed that it affects the way you
feel and act. But what is actually happening inside your brain when you drink?
The cerebral cortex controls your thinking, emotions and decision making capabilities.
When alcohol hits, it inhibits your ability to think clearly. It also affects the five
senses and elevates negative emotions.
The cerebellum controls your coordination and movements. Under the influence, your ability
to walk or drive is impaired.
The hippocampus controls your memory. Overconsumption affects short term memory, which can lead
to blackouts.
The medulla and the hippocampus controls involuntary processes, such as breathing, heart rate,
digestion and body temperature. Drinking slows your breath and heart rate.
Too much alcohol can shut down the medulla, causing alcohol induced comas, or even death.
So the next time you go out drinking, remember what it's doing to your brain and why it makes
you feel the way you do.
Stay resilient. Stay informed.
