We'll be discussing what broadband is, what types there are, major players, the price range you should be looking at, and what to do if you live in a rural area. Dial-up is when you don't have a dedicated line and you connect to the internet over a phone line. With broadband, you are always connected to the internet, it's much faster and there are several different types. There are four types of broadband.... the first is DSL, which is often less expensive, but quality can degrade if you're far away from the provider's central office. The second is cable internet, which works over cable lines. It's faster than DSL, butit can bottleneck and slow at peak usage times. The third is satellite, which beams in from a satellite in space and thus is available in almost any location. The fourth is fiber optic, which is light transmitting over fibers. It has the highest speeds, but it can be expensive and it's only available in limited areas. This is a list of some of the broadband internet providers. There are a lot of them, but not all of them may be available in your area. Just to narrow down that list a little bit, here's a list of the five with the most subscribers. There's Comcast, At&T, Time Warner, Versizon, and CenturyLink. Here are those same five providers again, along with their starter package prices. This is the lower end and at the higher end, you can see prices as high as ninety dollars. If you live in a rural area, you may not have access to fiber, cable, or DSL. In that case, you should get satellite internet like dishNET, because as I've shown here, it is up to one hundred and fifty times faster.
