Today I’m going to walk you through the stories of how I learned English

今日は、私がどのようにして英語を学んだかのお話をお届けします。

Right now my whole career is built around English

今、私のキャリアは英語を中心に構築されています。

my speeches all around Taiwan, it’s basically all about English

私の台湾各地でのスピーチは基本的に英語が中心です。

Of course I still have room for improvement

I do not think that I have perfected English

私は英語を完成させたとは思わない

sometimes even I still make mistakes in my videos, sorry about that

時には私もまだ私のビデオでミスをすることがあります、それについては申し訳ありません。

But I’d say I’m in pretty good shape

でも、かなりいい状態だと思います。

I've passed the advanced level in GEPT

GEPTの上級レベルに合格しました。

and I’ve aced the TOEIC examinations in all fields

と、あらゆる分野のTOEIC試験をクリアしてきました。

but more importantly I’m passionate about sharing the language

しかし、それ以上に重要なのは、私は言語を共有することに情熱を持っています。

and I’m constantly learning new things about the language

そして、私は常に言葉について新しいことを学んでいます。

So, the big question is, how did I learn English?

そこで大きな問題となるのが、どうやって英語を学んだかということです。

How did Ray Du English learn English?

レイ・ドゥ英語はどのようにして英語を学んだのでしょうか？

The short answer: just like the rest of you

簡潔な答えは、あなたの残りの部分と同じように

I studied hard, I memorized my vocab, I prepared for my exams

一生懸命勉強したし、ボキャブラリーも暗記したし、試験の準備もしたし

But let’s get into the details

しかし、詳細に入りましょう

When I was in second grade I was sent to Singapore with my sister

小学2年生の時に妹とシンガポールに行かされました。

to move in with my aunt’s family and to learn English

叔母の家に引っ越してきて英語を学ぶために

When I first got there

最初に行った時は

my English level is exactly what you’d expect from an eight-year-old

八歳児の英語力はさすが

Practically zero

実質的にゼロ

I can spell the word apple I guess, but maybe with like just one p

私はリンゴという言葉を綴ることができると思いますが、多分1つのpのようなもので

I explicitly remember that I failed

失敗したことを露骨に覚えている

my primary school entrance examination

小学受験

and there was this one question where it asked me

とある質問がありました。

to pick out the piano from four musical instruments

4つの楽器の中からピアノを選ぶ

There was of course, the piano, a violin, a drum, and a trumpet

もちろん、ピアノ、バイオリン、ドラム、トランペットもありました。

Yeah, I picked the trumpet

そうだ トランペットを選んだんだ

So I had to cram for it

だから、私はそれのために塾をしなければなりませんでした。

I was nowhere as capable as needed be in order to enter a school

私は学校に入学するために必要とされるほどの能力を持っていませんでした。

where every single subject is taught in English

First I went to a language school that was

最初に行った語学学校は

all the way across the other side of the island, it was really far away

And, that didn’t work out, so after that my aunt got me a private tutor

それがうまくいかなくて 叔母が家庭教師を雇ってくれたの

and that didn’t work out

And then I got another tutor, which didn’t work out

そして、別の家庭教師を雇ったのですが、うまくいきませんでした。

and I got another one and so on and so forth

とか言って、もう一枚もらったりして

At this point, I was honestly just sick of everything

この時点では、正直、すべてに嫌気がさしていました。

I mean, why did I have to leave all my friends in Taiwan

というか、なんで友達を全部台湾に置いていく必要があったんだろう？

and come to this place to learn this impossible language?

そして、このありえない言葉を学ぶために、この場所に来たのでしょうか？

It just wasn’t working out for me

それは私のためにうまくいっていなかった

But then, I got assigned this new tutor

でも、新しい家庭教師を任されることになりました。

What she did with me was a little different

彼女が私にしたことは少し違っていた

Uh, no, she didn’t molest me

痴漢はしていません

Before throwing me heaps of assignment

私に大量の課題を投げつける前に

she first asked me a very interesting question

“What’s something that you want to do but can’t do because of English?"

I thought about this question for a bit, like really really deeply

And then, I came up with my answer:

“I can’t buy Yu-Gi-Oh cards.”

Serious answer

But she didn’t laugh at me

what she did next was she taught me the phrase

"I want to buy a pack of Yu-Gi-Oh cards"

"遊戯王カードのパックを買いたい"

and after I’ve gotten it, she gave me 2 Singaporean dollars

を手に入れた後、彼女は私に2シンガポールドルをくれました。

and told me to go buy a pack of Yu-Gi-Oh cards

遊戯王カードのパックを買いに行けと言われて

Guess what, I used fluent English and

流暢な英語を使って、何だと思いますか？

bought a pack of Yu-Gi-Oh cards from a Malaysian shop keeper that day

その日、マレーシアの店員さんに遊技王のカードのパックを買ってもらいました。

So that was really the eye-opening experience for me

だから、それは私にとって本当に目を見張るような体験でした。

to see that English is not just a subject that I had to cram for

英語はただ塾に通わなければならない科目ではないということがわかりました。

but a language that I can use to communicate with people

でも、人とのコミュニケーションに使える言葉

And more importantly buy Yu-Gi-Oh cards

そしてもっと重要なのは遊戯王のカードを買うことです。

Now after this “enlightenment”

この「悟り」の後に

I was more willing to put my effort into learning

勉強に力を入れようと思った。

Now, don’t get me wrong English was still hard

勘違いしないでください、英語はまだ難しかったです。

I still had tons of homework and tests

まだ宿題やテストがたくさんあった

But, I had a feeling that I was getting somewhere

でも、どこかに行き着いているような気がしていました。

I had a purpose

私には目的があった

Of course, I could tell you how many words were on my weekly vocab list

もちろん、週刊ボキャブラリーリストに載っていた単語の数を教えてあげることもできました。

I could tell you all about the essays that I memorized

暗記した作文を全部話せた

the newspaper articles that I recited, the grammar textbooks that I used

暗唱した新聞記事、使った文法の教科書

But that’s not really the point

しかし、それは本当の意味ではありません

The point is, instead of asking how you should learn English

ポイントは、どうやって英語を学ぶべきかを問うのではなく

it’s better to start off with asking

聞いてからにした方がいい

why you’re learning English in the first place

そもそもなぜ英語を学ぶのか

Starting with why gives you a sense of purpose

理由から始めると目的意識が芽生える

Are you learning just to pass an exam?

試験に合格するためだけに勉強しているのか？

Are you learning to meet your parents’ expectations?

親の期待に応えられるように勉強していますか？

Or are you really learning for yourself?

それとも本当に自分のために勉強しているのか？

It’s a pity how English is just seen by most people

英語はほとんどの人に見られているだけなのが残念です。

as a subject that you have to study

勉強しなければならない科目として

It’s more of a language that allows you to

それはどちらかというと、言語を使って

see a bigger world and connect with more people

世界を見て、より多くの人とつながる

I love this quote by Natalie Portman, an actress, she said

女優のナタリー・ポートマンのこの名言が大好きです。

“I hate studying but I like learning. Learning is beautiful.”

"勉強は嫌いだけど、学ぶことは好き。学ぶことは美しい。"

So are you studying English? Or are you learning English?

では、あなたは英語を勉強していますか？それとも英語を勉強しているのか？

There’s actually a difference

実際には違いがある

So that’s basically how I learned English so well

ということで、基本的に英語の勉強はそこそこできました。

I started at a young age and I had the advantage

若くして始めた私にはメリットがありました。

of being in an English environment, but above all

英語環境にいることの良さもさることながら、何よりも

it’s because I like learning English and I put a lot of effort into it

英語を学ぶのが好きで力を入れているからです。

I didn’t stop learning and I don’t plan on stopping

勉強はやめなかったし、やめるつもりもない。

So at the end of the day

だから、一日の終わりに

what should you do if you wanna learn English?

英語を学びたいならどうすればいいの？
