So I have a lot of matcha recipes, and you guys have a lot of questions about matcha.

Question 1: What is matcha?

Well, it's actually a premium green tea that is planted in a certain way, and hand selected, steamed, aged, and then stone-grounded into matcha powder.

It is usually prepared with a bamboo whisk,

and the most traditional and premium ones can be really really expensive.

And like tea leaves, which are infused in hot water,

matcha powder is just a really combined with boiling water.

I'm no tea expert, but I was told you are suppose to use the bamboo whisk in a W-motion to froth the tea.

The process of preparing matcha is actually a form of art for the Japanese,

and it is performed in a lot of traditional ceremonies.

Because you are actually consuming the whole tea leaf,

matcha is way more nutritious than green tea.

This is another question I get a lot,

and the answer is a solid "no."

These instant drinks use a lot of low-quality matcha powder, and they have a lot additives to it, so you cannot use it for baking.

これらのインスタント飲料には低品質の抹茶パウダーがたくさん使われており、添加物もたくさん入っているので、お菓子作りには使えない。

Now, onto the most popular question.

さて、最も人気のある質問に移ろう。

I usually get mine at Japanese supermarkets, but I know a lot of you do not have one near by.

私はいつも日本のスーパーで買っているが、近くにスーパーがない人も多いだろう。

So I went and found 3 websites that sell matcha powder online.

そこで、オンラインで抹茶パウダーを販売しているウェブサイトを3つ探してみた。

So this is the first brand, and it comes in a tin

これが最初のブランドで、缶入りだ。

with a tin-foil packaging inside.

錫箔の包装が中に入っている。

Again, I'm no expert, so I'm not gonna compare the different brands.

繰り返しますが、私は専門家ではありませんので、異なるブランドを比較するつもりはありません。

But I did make sure these were all of good quality.

しかし、私はこれらがすべて良質であることを確認した。

The second brand also in a tin, but without the tin-foil packaging.

セカンド・ブランドも缶入りだが、錫箔のパッケージはない。

And you can see it's a really vibrant color.

そして、実に鮮やかな色であることがわかるだろう。

So this third one comes in a can. We have to open it

and then inside, you'll see this tin-foil packaging as well.

Good quality matcha powder could get really expensive so if you just using it for baking, you can use cooking grade matcha.

良質の抹茶パウダーは高くつくので、お菓子作りに使うだけなら、料理用の抹茶を使えばいい。

These come in zip-lock bags making them really convenient to use and as you can see the color is actually really vibrant as well.

ジップロックの袋に入っているので、使うのにとても便利だし、ご覧の通り、色も実に鮮やかだ。

However, the taste is of course not comparable to the ceremonial ones,

しかし、味はもちろん儀式用のものとは比較にならない、

but they are way more affordable.

でも、値段はもっと手頃だ。
