The Little Mermaid

にんぎょひめ

Deep inside the sea,

ふかい　うみの　なかに、

there lived a little mermaid.

ちいさな　にんぎょひめが　すんでいました。

She was a princess who loved to see the outside world.

にんぎょひめは　そとの　せかいを　しるのが　だいすきな おひめさまでした。

One night, she visited the seaside.

あるよる、にんぎょひめは　うみべへ　いってみました。

The mermaid went up to the surface.

にんぎょひめは　うみの　うえまで　でてみます。

She was so excited to see a big ship.

どきどきしながら　おおきな　ふねを　みました。

“How fantastic!”

「なんて　すばらしいの！」

In the sky, the sparking lights were bright.

そらには、きらきらの　はなびが　かがやいていました。

People in the ship were singing and dancing,

ふねの　なかの　ひとびとは　うたったり　おどったり。

and a prince was playing with a funny dog.

そして、ひとりの　おうじが おかしな　いぬと　あそんでいました。

‘How handsome he is!’

「なんて　すてきな　ひと！」

thought the mermaid.

にんぎょひめは　おもいました。

Suddenly, a big storm came up

とつぜん、おおきな　あらしが　きました。

and the ship was broken down.

そして、ふねが　こわれてしまいました。

“Oh, no! He is in danger!”

「ああ!　おうじさまが　あぶない！」

shouted the mermaid.

にんぎょひめが　さけびました。

She swam to the prince dying in the sea.

にんぎょひめは　うみの　なかで　しにそうな おうじの　ところまで　およぎます。

She took him to the seashore.

にんぎょひめは　おうじを　はまべに　つれていきました。

And, she laid him down.

それから、おうじを　よこに　ねかせてあげました。

Soon, a lady passed by the seashore.

しばらくして、ひとりの　おじょうさんが はまべを　とおりました。

And, the mermaid hid herself behind the rock.

それで、にんぎょひめは　いわの　かげに　かくれました。

The prince woke up and saw the lady.

おうじが　めざめて、おじょうさんを　みました。

He said,

おうじが　いいました。

“Thank you for saving my life.”

「いのちを　たすけてくれて、ありがとう」

The lady took the prince to his palace.

おじょうさんは　おうじを　おしろまで おくっていきました。

The mermaid could not forget about the prince.

にんぎょひめは　おうじの　ことが　わすれられません。

'I wish I had human legs!'

「わたしに　にんげんの　あしが　あったらな！」

thought the mermaid.

にんぎょひめは　おもいました。

The mermaid visited the sea witch.

にんぎょひめは　うみの　まじょを　たずねました。

She said,

にんぎょひめは　いいます。

"I want human legs."

「わたしは　にんげんの　あしが　ほしいんです。」

“Can you help me?”

「たすけてもらえませんか？」

“Sure, I can if you give me your voice.”

「いいとも、たすけてあげよう。おまえの　こえを わたしに　くれるならね。」

The mermaid promised to give the witch her voice,

にんぎょひめは　こえを　まじょに　あげると やくそくしました。

and she finally got human legs.

そして　ついに、にんげんの　あしを　もらいました。

The witch shouted,

まじょは　どなって　いいました。

“Don't forget!"

「わすれるんじゃないよ！」

"If you don't marry the prince,

「もし　おうじと　けっこんできなかったら、

you will become bubbles.”

おまえは　あわに　なってしまうからね。」

At the seashore, the prince saw the mermaid.

はまべで　おうじは　にんぎょひめに　あいました。

The prince said,

おうじが　いいました。

"You look familiar."

「あなたを　しっている　きが　します。」

“Do I know you?”

「おしりあいでしょうか？」

The mermaid wanted to say something,

にんぎょひめは　なにか　いいたかったけれど、

but her voice was totally gone.

こえが　ぜんぜん　だせません。

Soon, the prince took the mermaid to his palace.

そして、おうじは　にんぎょひめを おしろへ　つれていきました。

In his palace, the mermaid おうじの　おしろで、にんぎょひめは

おうじの　おしろで、にんぎょひめは

was happy for a while.

しばらくの　あいだ　しあわせでした。

However, one day the prince

ところが　あるひ、おうじは　にんぎょひめに

showed the mermaid a lady.

ひとりの　おじょうさんを　しょうかいしました。

“I'm going to marry this lady.”

「わたしは　この　おじょうさんと　けっこんするんです。」

“Once she saved my life.”

「かつて　わたしの　いのちを　たすけてくれたんですよ。」

The mermaid was so sad,

にんぎょひめは　たいへん　かなしみました。

but she could not say anything.

でも、なにも　いえませんでした。

At night,

the mermaid heard her sisters.

にんぎょひめは　おねえさんたちの　こえを　ききました。

They were calling the mermaid from the sea.

おねえさんたちが　うみから にんぎょひめを　よんでいたのです。

The mermaid went outside.

にんぎょひめは　そとへ　でました。

“Kill the prince, and save your life!”

「おうじを　ころして、あなたの　いのちを　まもりなさい！」

they shouted.

おねえさんたちは　さけびました。

The mermaid went into the prince's room.

にんぎょひめは　おうじの　へやに　はいりました。

He was sleeping peacefully.

おうじは　しあわせそうに　ねていました。

She saw the prince and thought,

にんぎょひめは　おうじを　みつめながら　おもいました。

‘I can't kill the prince.'

「おうじさまを　ころすなんて　できない。」

'I would rather die.'

「いっそ　わたしが　しにましょう。」

The next day, the mermaid

つぎのひ、にんぎょひめは　

blessed the prince's wedding.

おうじの　けっこんを　おいわいしました。

Then, she jumped into the water.

それから、うみの　なかへ　とびこみました。

Soon, she became bubbles in the sea,

たちまち　にんぎょひめは　うみの　なかで あわに　なってしまいました。

but her beautiful heart

そして、にんぎょひめの　うつくしい　たましいは

rested in peace in heaven.

てんごくで　やすらかに　ねむりました。
