Good questions that I got from a Doing English Daily newsletter subscriber, is it possible to learn English alone?

Now by this, I'm assuming that the person means alone as in not taking a class, that is studying by oneself at home or whatever, self-study.

今、この人が言っているのは、授業を受けない一人での勉強、つまり自宅などでの自学自習のことだと思います。

Of course, the simple answer to the question is yes, absolutely.

もちろん、その答えは簡単で、「はい、絶対にできる」です。

And in fact, I would say that is preferable.

そして実際、その方が望ましいと言えるでしょう。

I, personally, hate language classes.

私、個人的には、国語の授業は嫌いです。

It would be hard to say that I ever studied Japanese in a class because I lasted for days.

ちょっと言いにくいですが、授業で日本語を勉強したことがあって、何日も続いてたんですけど、

I hated it.

嫌いだったんですね。

I did take a Japanese class once and I didn't really go past the, the kind of the trial period, just couldn't see the point in it.

一度だけ日本語の授業を受けたんですけど、体験入学のようなもので、あまり何がどうなのかが分かりませんでした。

I honestly think that in this modern world, with the way that the Internet and technology and the availability of information, the way the modern world is becoming,

正直なところ、インターネットやテクノロジー、情報の入手方法など、現代社会がそうなっていく中で、語学教室の活用や語学教室の効果、先生の重要性がどんどん薄れてきているように思います。

I think the use of language classes, the effectiveness of language classes, and the importance of teachers is rapidly dwindling.

I think the time where to learn a language, to learn English, you needed to go to a class and be taught by a teacher. I think that time is gone.

語学を学ぶには、英語を学ぶには、教室に通って先生に教わる必要があった時代だと思います。もうそんな時代は終わったと思います。

Gone, gone, gone.

終わった、終わった。

Now, of course I wouldn't say that learning completely by yourself, that is being totally anti-social and never going out and refusing to ever speak to anybody in English is a good idea.

もちろん、完全に独学、つまり反社会的で外に出ず、誰とも英語で話すことを拒否するというのは良いアイデアとは言えません。

To be honest, when I learn languages, I really kind of don't actually get out there much at all.

正直なところ、私は語学を学ぶと、実際には全くと言っていいほど外に出なくなるんです。

Well, Japanese is different because I live in Japan and I work in Japanese and I do, you know, most of my life and my business is run in Japanese.

私は日本に住んでいて、日本語で仕事をしていますし、生活も仕事もほとんど日本語で行っています。

I've been learning a bit of Chinese on and off for a couple months now, and I've never actually used Chinese with a real person, but I mean, I've never actually seen that as a drawback at all.

数ヶ月前から中国語を少し勉強していて、実際に人と中国語を使ったことはないのですが、つまり、実はそれが欠点だと思ったことは全くないんです。

It's simply a case that I'm learning Chinese out of interest at the moment, although I will have a need for it in the near future, but I don't have any reason to use Chinese at the moment.

単純に、近い将来必要になるだろうけど、今のところ中国語を使う理由がないので、興味本位で中国語を勉強している、ということです。

But, if, you know, it is good to be social, to get out there.

でもね、社交的であること、外に出ることはいいことなんです。

I think the role of other people in learning English now is not like a class to be taught as a part of, but rather to get involved with other people, to have people there who are going through the same kind of experience as you.

今、英語学習における他者の役割は、授業のように一部分として教わることではなく、他者と関わることで、自分と同じような経験をしている人がそこにいることをわかって、

People who can help you overcome problems that they've had and that they know how to solve.

その人たちが経験した問題の解決方法を教えてくれたりもします。

People who can answer your questions, people who can keep you motivated and keep your spirits up when you're feeling bad about it.

質問に答えてくれる人、モチベーションを保ってくれる人、嫌なことがあったときに元気を出してくれる人であったり。

People who can comfort you when you screw up in English.

英語で失敗した時に慰めてくれる人でもあります。

I think that is very, very important, but you know, it's not necessary really to take a class for that.

それはとても大切なことだと思いますが、そのために授業を受ける必要はないんです。

I mean, it's why Doing English Plus community exists.

つまり、そのために Doing English Plus というコミュニティが存在しています。

I could have just Doing English Plus's weekly lessons, but it also includes a community.

English Plus の週1回のレッスンをこなすだけでもよかったのですが、コミュニティもついているのが魅力です。

I could have just done the weekly lessons, and that's what most people join for, but the community is an important aspect because it's there for when people need the support.

週1回のレッスンだけでもよく、それを目的で入会される方がほとんどです。でも、コミュニティは重要な要素で、というのも、サポートを必要とする人がいる場合、そこにいるからです。

I think that is the only advantage of taking a class, and I would say that with a little bit of creativity, with a little bit of imagination, you could really get over that anyway.

それが授業を受ける唯一の利点だと思うし、ちょっとした工夫、想像力があれば、とにかく本当に乗り越えられると思います。

Of course, the only problem with learning alone really comes down to...

もちろん、一人で学ぶことの唯一の問題は、

Well, two things I guess.

まあ、2つあるんですけど。

First is motivation. Keeping yourself motivated when you're alone can be difficult, and this is something that I've struggled with with Chinese a little bit.

1つ目はモチベーションです。一人の時にモチベーションを維持するのは難しいことで、これは私が中国語を学ぶときにも少し苦労したことがあります。

I've been super busy recently and Chinese is not something that's that important to me, and so it does tend to be right down on the bottom of my list of priorities,

最近は超多忙で、中国語は私にとってそれほど重要なものではないので、優先順位は一番下になりがちで、確かに毎日、時には毎週はできないですね。

and I certainly don't get it done every day, and sometimes not every week.

But again, Chinese is not really an important thing for me at the moment, so motivation is something to work on.

ただ、やはり中国語は今のところあまり重要ではないので、モチベーションは努力次第でどうにでもなりますし、モチベーションの保ち方についてもいい質問があったので、今後の動画でお答えしていきたいと思います。

And I will be answering the question of how to keep yourself motivated in a future video because I had a good question about that too.

The other problem I would say that you get with learning by yourself is pressure. Pressure, intensity of practice.

もうひとつ、独学で得られる問題点として、プレッシャー、圧力、練習の強度が挙げられると思います。

Now, I absolutely do not believe for one second that you need other people to practice with.

今、私は、練習相手に他人が必要だとは1秒たりとも思っていないです。

I mean this is one of the biggest myths out there.

つまり、これは世の中で最も大きな神話の一つなのです。

"Oh, I need to practice my English. I need people to speak with."

"ああ、英語の練習をしたいんだ。話す相手が必要だ"

Practice is practice is practice.

練習は練習です。

I mean there are different things that you can do which work better than others, and especially when you get to the intermediate to advanced stage, some things will stop being effective.

つまり、できることとできないことは違うということです。特に中級、上級になると、効果がなくなってくるものもあります。

In fact, once you get to the intermediate advanced stage, just having conversations with native speakers is one of the things which will become very ineffective.

実際、中上級の段階になると、ネイティブスピーカーと会話をするだけでは、とても効果がなくなってくるのもその１つです。

There's all kinds of reasons for that which I won't go into here, but there is no reason why you can't practice by yourself.

その理由はいろいろあるのでここでは触れませんが、一人で練習できない理由はないのです。

In fact, I teach a whole course which is designed to teach you how to do that.

実際、私はその方法を教えるための講座を開催しています。

Of course, the problem is without the kind of a fear factor that you get when you're, say, giving a presentation in front of a group of people,

もちろん、問題は、たとえば大勢の人の前でプレゼンテーションをするときのような恐怖感がなければ、成功しなければならないとか、バカにされてはいけないといったプレッシャーがなければ、そのプレッシャーに負けてしまうかもしれないことです。

without the kind of the pressure that comes with having to succeed or look stupid, you might not get as far as you would if you had that pressure.

However, that pressure is also something that can be replicated completely by yourself with a bit of imagination and creativity.

しかし、そのプレッシャーは、ちょっとした想像力と工夫で完全に自分で再現できるものでもあるのです。

Anyway, that is my rather long-winded answer to the question.

とにかく、これが私の長ったらしい答えです。

Can you learn English by yourself? Absolutely yes, not only that but I think you probably should.

英語は独学でできるのか？もちろんできます。それだけでなく、おそらくそうすべきだと思います。
