We're just taking out the trash.

ゴミを出しているだけです。

You probably don't spend much time thinking about trash, at least, not until it starts to smell, and it's time to take it out.

少なくともゴミのことを考えている時間は少ないだろうし、臭いが出てきてからでないと、そろそろ持ち出してもいいのではないだろうか。

But we all make trash every day.

でも、みんな毎日ゴミを作っています。

Like the eggshells left over from breakfast, or the plastic bag from your lunch, or metal cans that your mom or dad might open up at dinner time.

朝ごはんの残り物の卵の殻や、お弁当のビニール袋、お母さんやお父さんが夕食の時に開けてしまう金属の缶詰など。

Plus, we bring a lot of papers home from school, and they don't all fit on the refrigerator.

それに、学校から大量の書類を持って帰ってきて、冷蔵庫の上に全部は収まらないんです。

We usually throw a lot of this trash or waste into the garbage can.

普段はこのゴミやゴミ箱に大量に捨てています。

But did you ever wonder what happens to all this waste?

でも、この廃棄物がどうなるのか気になったことはありませんか？

Well, it doesn't just magically disappear.

まあ、魔法のように消えるわけではありません。

And what happens to it depends on what it's made of.

そして、それがどうなるかは、それが何でできているかにかかっています。

For example, some waste decomposes.

例えば、廃棄物の中には分解するものがあります。

When something decomposes, it breaks down, or rots.

何かが分解されると、それが分解されたり、腐ったりします。

If you've ever taken a walk in the woods, then you've probably noticed things decomposing.

森の中を散歩したことがある人は、腐敗しているものに気づいたことがあるでしょう。

Like the leaves that fell last autumn.

去年の秋に落ちた葉っぱのように

Or an old log.

もしくは古い丸太。

You can tell that those things are decomposing because they're very slowly getting brown and mushy.

腐敗していることがわかるのは、ゆっくりと茶色くなってきているからです。

They decompose because those things came form something that was once alive.

腐敗するのは、それらのものがかつて生きていた何かから来ているからです。

The leaves and the log were once parts of a tree.

葉っぱと丸太は、かつては木の一部だった。

And we make waste that decomposes too.

そして、私たちは分解する廃棄物も作っています。

Usually, this waste is also made of things that were once alive.

通常、この廃棄物もかつて生きていたものを使っています。

Like apple cores, eggshells, banana peels, and pretty much all of the leftover food from your table.

リンゴの芯、卵の殻、バナナの皮、そしてかなりすべてのあなたのテーブルからの残り物のような。

This kind of waste can be put to good use.

このような老廃物を上手に利用することができます。

As food for your garden called "compost".

We're gonna talk about how you can make compost in another episode.

But what about the waste that doesn't rot or break down?

でも、腐ったり壊れたりしないゴミはどうなんだろう？

Some of this waste goes into a dump, also known as a landfill.

この廃棄物の中には、埋立地とも呼ばれるダンプに入るものもあります。

And it basically just sits there, making a big, smelly mess.

そして、基本的にはそこに座っていて、大きな臭いの混乱を作っています。

And it'll keep sitting there for a long, long time.

そして、それは長い間、ずっとそこに座っているだろう。

Luckily, there's a way that you can get rid of your waste without adding to that mess.

幸いなことに、あなたはその混乱を追加することなく、あなたの廃棄物を取り除くことができる方法があります。

By recycling!

Recycling means taking waste and making it into something else.

リサイクルとは、廃棄物を取って別のものにすることです。

Maybe you have a recycling bin like this in your school or even in your own house.

もしかしたら、学校や自分の家にもこのようなゴミ箱があるかもしれません。

Things that we can recycle include metal, plastic, and paper.

リサイクルできるものには、金属、プラスチック、紙などがあります。

So let's check out what happens to the waste that you put in the recycling bin.

では、リサイクルボックスに入れたゴミはどうなるのかを確認してみましょう。

First, all of the recycling is collected and sorted into different kinds of waste.

まず、すべてのリサイクル品を回収して、分別しています。

All the plastic goes into one pile. All the metal in another.

プラスチックは一つの山に金属は別の山に

And the paper gets its own pile.

そして、紙は自分の山を手に入れる。

The metal is taken to a special factory, where it's crushed and then squished together with the metal from other recycling bins.

金属は特別な工場に運ばれ、そこで粉砕され、他のリサイクルボックスの金属と一緒につぶされます。

This big lump of metal is then chopped into little tiny pieces.

この大きな金属の塊を細かく刻んでいきます。

Next, those pieces are melted in a big oven, and then poured into molds shaped like blocks.

次に、それらのピースを大きなオーブンで溶かし、ブロックの形をした型に流し込みます。

These new blocks of metal are then sent to other factories, where they can be used to make other things made of metal.

これらの新しい金属のブロックは、他の工場に送られ、そこで金属でできた他のものを作るために使用することができます。

So the metal cans that you throw into the recycling bin don't go to the dump.

つまり、リサイクルボックスに捨てた金属缶はゴミ捨て場には行かないということですね。

They get a whole new life as a new can, or a piece of foil, or even part of a bike or a car.

彼らは新しい缶、または箔の一部として、あるいは自転車や車の一部として全く新しい人生を得る。

And your old milk jug made of plastic can be turned into something new too.

そして、プラスチック製の古い牛乳の水差しも新しいものに変えることができます。

It's also taken to a special factory, where the plastic is shredded into tiny bits and then melted in a really hot oven and made into little pellets.

Factories can take these pellets and make them into new things, like water bottles and food containers, and even bigger things, like park benches, carpet, and even some kinds of clothing.

So what about all those papers that you've brought home?

Paper is recycled in a way that's a little different from metal and plastic.

It's taken to a recycling center, where it's mixed with other paper, and a whole bunch of water, until it gets all goopy.

This goop is then smashed between two rollers which squish it into big flat sheets.

このグープは、2つのローラーの間に挟まれ、大きな平らなシートに押しつぶされます。

These sheets are left to dry, then they're cut into pieces of new paper, which we could use for art projects.

これらのシートは乾燥させた後、新しい紙にカットされ、アートプロジェクトに使用することができます。

If you think about it, when we recycle, we're breaking down waste that doesn't decompose on its own.

考えてみれば、リサイクルするときは、自分では分解しない廃棄物を分解していることになります。

And that makes less waste for all of us!

そうすることで、みんなの無駄が減るんだよ
