So as a photographer you have the capabilities of freezing action and offering the viewer a perspective that they're not able to get with their own eye. And that's sort of 80 percent of the battle here as a baseball photographer. Making these really interesting photographs that people when they see them they say, "Wow! You know, I saw that play on TV, but that is so cool. I didn't see it like that." And the other thing is emotion. Sports brings out emotion in people on both ends of the spectrum and you have to be there to sort of capture those raw moments that happen. Which when they do happen they really make for a more impactful photograph. This is a great angle to get, the head-on angle. That's why we shoot here just for the first inning and try to get this look before we go back further. My strategy when it comes to shooting a baseball game is to try and anticipate. You can't really follow the ball because it's moving too fast. So if you want to get something like a diving catch you really have to be trained on the fielder already hoping that a pull hitter is gonna to hit it to that player. Often times you'll be on the third baseman and the shortstop will make a diving catch and it's very frustrating but you just have to take that chance. Game days here at Fenway often times are a bit of a whirlwind. A lot of the players have charities and they have groups coming here. Senator Brown was here the other day and I wanted to make sure we had nice photos of him throwing out the first pitch, meeting the players, doing all that stuff because people will be looking for those photos. Basically I'm gonna have you stand right here on those two black dots. Mmm-hmm. Give you one of the masks. Shoot it up. Shoot up. As everyone knows David Ortiz has a ton of personality. We ended up making these masks that had a whole bunch of different expressions of David Ortiz's face. He has such a great sense of humor that he really had a lot of fun. I have just one photo of him sort of peeking out from the mask. It's a very genuine smile and it's nice to be able to show the viewer through that one single image his personality and sort of how he is in real life. And it's really nice to have this 99 year-old baseball park as your canvas because there's a lot of different places and different historical elements here. Forget about the baseball game. The park itself makes for a very interesting subject for a photographer. I particularly love the energy during games here. Especially as the season starts to go on and on, the Red Sox are on the hunt, and there's a certain buzz in the air that I really enjoy. It really keeps me going.
