I would love to share with you a story.

皆さん 集まって下さい

Once upon a time

皆さんに物語を聞かせましょう

in 19th century Germany,

昔むかし

there was the book.

19世紀のドイツに

Now during this time,

本というものがありました

the book was the king of storytelling.

この時代

It was venerable.

本は語りの王様でした

It was ubiquitous.

威厳があり

But it was a little bit boring.

どこにでもありました

Because in its 400 years of existence,

でもちょっぴり退屈でした

storytellers never evolved the book

というのも 400年の間

as a storytelling device.

語り手が語りのツールとして本を

But then one author arrived,

進化させることはなかったからです

and he changed the game forever.

でもそこに１人の創作家が現れて

(Music)

大変革をもたらしたのでした

His name was Lothar,

（音楽）

Lothar Meggendorfer.

その人の名はローター

Lothar Meggendorfer put his foot down,

ローター・メッゲンドルファーでした

and he said, "Genug ist genug!"

ローターは断固とした態度でこう言いました

He grabbed his pen,

「Genug ist genug!（もうたくさんだ！）」

he snatched his scissors.

ローターはペンをひっつかみ

This man refused to fold to the conventions of normalcy

さらにハサミを取り出しました

and just decided to fold.

普通のやり方に折れるのはいやだと

History would know Lothar Meggendorfer

紙を折ることにしました

as -- who else? --

ローター・メッゲンドルファーは

the world's first true inventor

なんと言っても

of the children's pop-up book.

飛び出す絵本を世界で初めて

(Music)

発明した人として知られることになったのです

For this delight and for this wonder,

（音楽）

people rejoiced.

この楽しさと面白さに

(Cheering)

人々は喜びました

They were happy because the story survived,

（喝采）

and that the world would keep on spinning.

物語は語られ続け 世界は回り続けて

Lothar Meggendorfer wasn't the first

人々は幸せでした

to evolve the way a story was told,

ローター・メッゲンドルファーは

and he certainly wasn't the last.

語りの方法を進化させた

Whether storytellers realized it or not,

唯一の人ではありませんでした

they were channeling Meggendorfer's spirit

自覚しているかは別として

when they moved opera to vaudville,

語り手たちは

radio news to radio theater,

メッゲンドルファーの精神を受け継いで 歌劇を演劇に進展させ

film to film in motion

ラジオニュースをラジオ劇に

to film in sound, color, 3D,

写真を動画に

on VHS and on DVD.

There seemed to be no cure for this Meggendorferitis.

VHSやDVDに収めたのです

And things got a lot more fun when the Internet came around.

このメッゲンドルファー熱の薬は無いようでした

(Laughter)

そしてインターネットの登場で事態は更に面白くなりました

Because, not only could people broadcast their stories throughout the world,

（笑）

but they could do so

自分の物語を世界に配信できるだけでなく

using what seemed to be an infinite amount of devices.

際限なく出てくるツールを使って

For example, one company

配信できるからです

would tell a story of love

例えばある会社は

through its very own search engine.

自社の検索エンジンを使って

One Taiwanese production studio

ラブストーリーを語り

would interpret American politics in 3D.

ある台湾の制作スタジオは

(Laughter)

アメリカ政治を3Dで表現しています

And one man would tell the stories of his father

（笑）

by using a platform called Twitter

また ある男はツイッターというプラットフォームを使い

to communicate the excrement his father would gesticulate.

自分の父親が

And after all this, everyone paused;

どんな言動で鬱憤を晴らすか伝えています

they took a step back.

ここまで来たとき人々は

They realized that, in 6,000 years of storytelling,

立ち止まって状況を振り返り

they've gone from depicting hunting on cave walls

6000年の語りの歴史は

to depicting Shakespeare on Facebook walls.

洞窟の壁に描かれた狩猟画から フェイスブックのウォール上の

And this was a cause for celebration.

シェークスピアまで発展したのだと気づきました

The art of storytelling has remained unchanged.

これはめでたいことでした

And for the most part, the stories are recycled.

語りの美学は変わっていません

But the way that humans tell the stories

それに大抵の場合 物語は繰り返し語られています

has always evolved

でも人が物語を伝えるやり方は

with pure, consistent novelty.

全く一貫した目新しさを伴って

And they remembered a man,

常に進化してきました

one amazing German,

そして人々はある男のことを

every time a new storytelling device

素晴らしいドイツ人のことを

popped up next.

新しい語りのツールが現れるたびに

And for that,

思い出したのでした

the audience --

the lovely, beautiful audience --

would live happily ever after.
