One of the big reasons is, we think success is a one-way street.

So we do everything that leads up to success,

but then we get there. We figure we've made it,

でも一旦成功すると、やり遂げたと思ってしまいます

we sit back in our comfort zone,

and we actually stop doing everything that made us successful.

自らを成功に導いたこと全てを行うのを止めてしまいます

And it doesn't take long to go downhill.

するとすぐに下り坂がやってきます

And I can tell you this happens,

これは実際に起こるのです

because it happened to me.

私の身にも起きたのですから

Reaching success, I worked hard, I pushed myself.

成功を掴まんとしている時、私は必死で働き、自分を追い込みました

But then I stopped, because I figured, "Oh, you know, I made it.

でもその後止まってしまったのです　「やり遂げた　もう楽ができる」

I can just sit back and relax."

と思ったから

Reaching success, I always tried to improve and do good work.

成功を掴まんとしている時、私はいつも自らを高め、良い仕事をしようとしました

But then I stopped because I figured, "Hey, I'm good enough.

でもその後止まってしまったのです　「私はもう十分良い仕事をしている

I don't need to improve any more."

これ以上良くするところはない」と思ったから

Reaching success, I was pretty good at coming up with good ideas.

成功を掴まんとしている時、私は良いアイデアを思いつくのがとても上手でした

Because I did all these simple things that led to ideas.

アイデアに結びつくようなあらゆることを実践していたから

But then I stopped, because I figured I was this hot-shot guy

でもその後止まってしまったのです　自分はやり手だからアイデアを出すために

and I shouldn't have to work at ideas, they should just come like magic.

努力しなくてもよいはずだ、アイデアは魔法のように湧き出るものだと思ったから

And the only thing that came was creative block.

実際に湧き出たのは創造性を邪魔するようなものだけでした

I couldn't come up with any ideas.

何のアイデアも生み出すことができなくなりました

Reaching success, I always focused on clients and projects,

成功を掴まんとしている時、私はいつも顧客やプロジェクトに集中し

and ignored the money. Then all this money started pouring in.

お金のことは無視していました　でも、大金が転がり込むようになったのです

And I got distracted by it.

そしてそれに気を奪われました

And suddenly I was on the phone to my stockbroker and my real estate agent,

突如として私は株式仲買人や不動産屋とやり取りするようになりました

when I should have been talking to my clients.

顧客と話さなければならないのに

And reaching success, I always did what I loved.

成功を掴まんとしている時、私はいつも自分の好きなことをしていました

But then I got into stuff that I didn't love,

でもその後、好きでないこともしなければいけなくなりました

like management. I am the world's worst manager,

例えばマネジメント　私は最低のマネージャーです

but I figured I should be doing it, because I was, after all,

the president of the company.

Well, soon a black cloud formed over my head

すぐに黒い雲が私の頭を覆うようになりました

and here I was, outwardly very successful,

外から見れば私は大いなる成功者でしたが

but inwardly very depressed.

内に闇を抱えていました

But I'm a guy; I knew how to fix it.

でも私は男です　どうやってそれを治せばよいかはわかっていました

I bought a fast car.

スポーツカーを買ったのです

It didn't help.

上手くいきませんでした

I was faster but just as depressed.

より速い車に乗っても同じように憂うつでした

So I went to my doctor. I said, "Doc,

それで医者のところに行き、こう言いました「先生、

I can buy anything I want. But I'm not happy. I'm depressed.

欲しい物は何でも買えるのに幸せじゃない　心が沈んでいるんだ

It's true what they say, and I didn't believe it until it happened to me.

皆が言う通りだった　でも自分の身に起きてみないとわからなかったよ

But money can't buy happiness."

お金では幸せは買えないんだ」と

He said, "No. But it can buy Prozac."

先生の答えは「その通り　でもプロザックは買えるよ」でした

And he put me on anti-depressants.

そして抗うつ剤を処方したのです

And yeah, the black cloud faded a little bit, but so did all the work,

黒い雲は少し消えました　でも全ての仕事もなくなりました

because I was just floating along. I couldn't care less if clients ever called.

私が浮雲のようになってしまったからです　顧客が電話してくれるかどうか、気にも留めなくなりました

And clients didn't call.

そして顧客たちは電話してこなくなりました

Because they could see I was no longer serving them,

I was only serving myself.

So they took their money and their projects to others who would serve them better.

Well, it didn't take long for business to drop like a rock.

My partner and I, Thom, we had to let all our employees go.

It was down to just the two of us, and we were about to go under.

And that was great.

Because with no employees, there was nobody for me to manage.

So I went back to doing the projects I loved.

I had fun again, I worked harder and, to cut a long story short,

did all the things that took me back up to success.

But it wasn't a quick trip.

It took seven years.

But in the end, business grew bigger than ever.

And when I went back to following these eight principles,

the black cloud over my head disappeared altogether.

And I woke up one day and I said,

"I don't need Prozac anymore."

「もうプロザックはいらない」と言いました

And I threw it away and haven't needed it since.

薬を捨て、それ以来はもう必要としていません

I learned that success isn't a one-way street.

私は、成功とは一方通行ではないんだと学びました

It doesn't look like this; it really looks more like this.

こんな感じというよりは、こちらに似ているのです

It's a continuous journey.

成功は、終わりのない旅です

And if we want to avoid "success-to-failure-syndrome,"

もし「成功したがために失敗する症候群」を避けたいのならば

we just keep following these eight principles,

この８つの原則に従い続けることです

because that is not only how we achieve success,

それはどのように成功するかということだけでなく

it's how we sustain it.
