A single mother of four,

1998年のことです

three months after the birth of my fourth child,

I went to do a job

as a research assistant.

I went to Northern Liberia.

And as part of the work,

the village would give you lodgings.

And they gave me lodging with a single mother

and her daughter.

This girl happened to be

the only girl in the entire village

who had made it

to the ninth grade.

９年生に上がった

She was the laughing stock of the community.

少女でした

Her mother was often told by other women,

少女はその村で物笑いの種でした

"You and your child

彼女の母親はよく他の女性から

will die poor."

「あなたとあなたの娘は

After two weeks of working in that village,

貧しいまま死ぬよ」と言われていました

it was time to go back.

その村で２週間を過ごした後

The mother came to me, knelt down,

帰る日が来ました

and said, "Leymah, take my daughter.

その母親は私のところに来てひざまずき

I wish for her

こう言いました 「娘を連れて行ってください

to be a nurse."

将来娘には

Dirt poor, living in the home with my parents,

看護師になってほしいの」

I couldn't afford to.

極貧の中 両親と同居していた私には

With tears in my eyes,

I said, "No."

目に涙を溜めて私は

Two months later,

"ノー"と言いました

I go to another village

２ヶ月後のことです

on the same assignment

私は同じ仕事で

and they asked me to live with the village chief.

別の村に行き

The women's chief of the village has this little girl,

そこで村長の家に住むよう言われました

fair color like me,

女性の村長には小さい女の子がいました

totally dirty.

私のように肌の色が薄く

And all day she walked around

汚れ放題でした

only in her underwear.

女の子は一日中 パンツ一枚で

When I asked, "Who is that?"

うろつきまわっていました

She said, "That's Wei.

「あの子は誰ですか？」と私が尋ねると

The meaning of her name is pig.

村長は答えました 「ウェイです

Her mother died while giving birth to her,

ウェイとは豚という意味です

and no one had any idea who her father was."

母親は彼女を産んだ時に死に

For two weeks, she became my companion,

父親の名前は誰も知りません」

slept with me.

滞在中の２週間のうちに 彼女は私の友達になり

I bought her used clothes

一緒に眠るようになりました

and bought her her first doll.

The night before I left,

she came to the room

and said, "Leymah, don't leave me here.

I wish to go with you.

I wish to go to school."

Dirt poor, no money,

living with my parents,

I again said, "No."

Two months later,

both of those villages fell into another war.

Till today, I have no idea

この２つの村はまた戦争状態に陥りました

where those two girls are.

Fast-forward, 2004:

全くわからないままです

In the peak of our activism,

早送りしましょう 2004年のことです

the minister of Gender Liberia called me

私たちの運動の最盛期だったころ

and said, "Leymah, I have a nine-year-old for you.

リベリアの ジェンダーと開発省の大臣が

I want you to bring her home

私を呼んで言いました 「レイマ

because we don't have safe homes."

この９歳の少女を託します

The story of this little girl:

私たちには安全な家がないの」

She had been raped

この少女の生い立ちはこうです

by her paternal grandfather

この少女は 父方の祖父に

every day for six months.

６ヶ月の間 毎日

She came to me bloated,

レイプされていました

very pale.

彼女は 腹部がぶっくりと膨らんでいて

Every night I'd come from work and lie on the cold floor.

青白い顔をしていました

She'd lie beside me

毎晩 私が仕事から戻って冷たい床に寝るとき

and say, "Auntie, I wish to be well.

I wish to go to school."

2010:

A young woman stands before President Sirleaf

and gives her testimony

of how she and her siblings live together,

their father and mother died during the war.

She's 19; her dream is to go to college

She's highly athletic.

One of the things that happens

is that she applies for a scholarship.

her wish of being educated,

is finally here.

She goes to school on the first day.

この夢がとうとう現実になったのです

The director of sports

初日に彼女が学校に行ったとき

who's responsible for getting her into the program

彼女を奨学金プログラムに入れた

asks her to come out of class.

スポーツの学部長が

And for the next three years,

彼女を教室の外に呼び出しました

her fate will be

そして入学してからの３年間

having sex with him every day,

as a favor for getting her in school.

Globally, we have policies,

Countries like America, we've heard things like No Child Left Behind.

Other countries come with different things.

There is a Millennium Development called Three

that focuses on girls.

All of these great works by great people

aimed at getting young people

to where we want to get them globally,

I think, has failed.

In Liberia, for example,

the teenage pregnancy rate

Teen prostitution is at its peak.

In one community, we're told,

you wake up in the morning

and see used condoms like used chewing gum paper.

Girls as young as 12 being prostituted

for less than a dollar a night.

It's disheartening, it's sad.

And then someone asked me,

just before my TEDTalk, a few days ago,

"So where is the hope?"

Several years ago, a few friends of mine

decided we needed to bridge the disconnect

Today, we've worked with over 300.

And some of those girls

who walked in the room very shy

部屋に入ってきたとき非常に内気だった

have taken bold steps, as young mothers,

若い母親であった

to go out there and advocate

for the rights of other young women.

One young woman I met,

権利を擁護しています

teen mother of four,

私が会ったある若い女性は

never thought about finishing high school,

10代で４人の子供がいました

graduated successfully;

never thought about going to college,

卒業することなど思ったこともありませんでした

enrolled in college.

One day she said to me,

"My wish is to finish college

and be able to support my children."

She's at a place where she can't find money

to go to school.

She sells water, sells soft drinks

and sells recharge cards for cellphones.

And you would think she would take that money

携帯電話のカードなどを売っています

and put it back into her education.

Juanita is her name.

She takes that money

and finds single mothers in her community

to send back to school.

Says, "Leymah, my wish

is to be educated.

And if I can't be educated,

when I see some of my sisters being educated,

my wish has been fulfilled.

I wish for a better life.

I wish for food for my children.

I wish that sexual abuse and exploitation in schools would stop."

This is the dream of the African girl.

Several years ago,

これがアフリカの少女の夢です

there was one African girl.

数年前

This girl had a son

あるアフリカの少女がいました

who wished for a piece of doughnut

その少女には息子がいて

because he was extremely hungry.

極限の飢えの中

Angry, frustrated,

ドーナツを食べることが夢でした

really upset

彼女のいる社会の状態に対して

about the state of her society

また我が子が置かれた状態に対して

and the state of her children,

怒りに燃え 不満を持ち

this young girl started a movement,

憤慨したこの若い女性は

a movement of ordinary women

運動を起こしました

banding together

平凡な女性の運動は

to build peace.

お互いを結束して

I will fulfill the wish.

平和を樹立しようというものでした

This is another African girl's wish.

私はこの願いを実現させます

I failed to fulfill the wish of those two girls.

この願いは別のアフリカの少女のものです

I failed to do this.

私は昔 ２人の少女の願いを叶えられず

These were the things that were going through the head of this other young woman --

私は失敗しました

I failed, I failed, I failed.

この若い女性が体験したような苦難もありましたが

So I will do this.

私は 失敗して 失敗して 失敗しました

Women came out,

だからこれはやり抜こうと思ったのです

protested a brutal dictator,

女性たちは 外に出てきて

fearlessly spoke.

残忍な独裁者に対して抗議し

Not only did the wish of a piece of doughnut come true,

恐れずに話しました

the wish of peace came true.

ドーナツ１つを得る願いだけではなく

This young woman

平和への願いも実現しました

wished also to go to school.

この若い女性もまた

She went to school.

学校に行きたいと願い

This young woman wished for other things to happen,

そして学校に行きました

it happened for her.

この若い女性の他の願いも

Today, this young woman is me,

叶いました

a Nobel laureate.

今日 この若い女性は私です

I'm now on a journey

ノーベル平和賞受賞者です

to fulfill the wish,

今私は 私の小さな力で

in my tiny capacity,

アフリカの少女の願い

of little African girls --

教育を受けたいという願いを

the wish of being educated.

叶えるための

We set up a foundation.

途上にいます

We're giving full four-year scholarships

私たちは基金を設立しました

to girls from villages that we see with potential.

農村に住む 才能があると認めた少女に

I don't have much to ask of you.

４年間の全額給与の奨学金を与えるというものです

I've also been to places in this U.S.,

私は皆さんにたくさんはお願いをしません

and I know that girls in this country

also have wishes,

a wish for a better life somewhere in the Bronx,

to help that girl,

be it an African girl or an American girl

achieve that dream?

Because all of these

great innovators and inventors

なぜなら

that we've talked to and seen

over the last few days
