my first foreign trip as a first lady.

And while this is not my first visit to the U.K.,

英国への訪問は初めてではないですが

I have to say that I am glad that this is my first official visit.

最初の公式訪問となったことを嬉しく思います

The special relationship between the United States and the U.K.

米国と英国の特別な関係は

is based not only on the relationship between governments,

政府間の関係によるものだけではありません

but the common language and the values that we share,

我々の共通の言語と価値観によるものです

and I'm reminded of that by watching you all today.

本日皆さんを見て改めてそう思いました

During my visit I've been especially honored

今回の滞在中に 英国で最も素晴しい

to meet some of Britain's most extraordinary women --

女性達にお会いできて大変光栄でした

women who are paving the way for all of you.

皆さんに道を開いてくれる女性達です

And I'm honored to meet you,

そして皆さんにお会いできて光栄です

the future leaders of Great Britain and this world.

英国 そして世界の未来のリーダーです

And although the circumstances of our lives may seem very distant,

私達の環境は大分違うと思われるかもしれません

with me standing here as the First Lady of the United States of America,

アメリカ合衆国のファーストレディとしてここに立つ私と

and you, just getting through school,

まだ学校に通っているあなた達とは...

I want you to know that we have very much in common.

実はすごく共通点があるんですよ

For nothing in my life's path

私のこれまでの人生において

would have predicted that I'd be standing here

ここに立つことを予想させるものなんてありませんでしたから

as the first African-American First Lady

アフリカ系アメリカ人最初の

of the United States of America.

ファーストレディとして...

There is nothing in my story that would land me here.

私がそうなれた理由なんて何もありません

I wasn't raised with wealth or resources

裕福な家に育ったというわけではないですし

or any social standing to speak of.

大した社会的立場もありませんでした

I was raised on the South Side of Chicago.

私はシカゴのサウスサイドで育ちました

That's the real part of Chicago.

これぞシカゴ、って感じのところです

And I was the product of a working-class community.

労働者階級の地域社会に育ちました

My father was a city worker all of his life,

私の父は生涯 市役所職員で

and my mother was a stay-at-home mom.

母は専業主婦でした

And she stayed at home to take care of me and my older brother.

いつも家で兄と私の面倒を見てくれました

Neither of them attended university.

両親とも大学は出ていません

My dad was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis

父は多発性硬化症と診断されました

in the prime of his life.

働き盛りの時にです

But even as it got harder for him to walk

歩くのも 朝服を着るのも

and get dressed in the morning --

辛くなっても－

I saw him struggle more and more --

どんどん苦しそうになっていったのですが－

my father never complained about his struggle.

父は何らその苦しみに不平を言わなかったのです

He was grateful for what he had.

ただ自分が持っているものに感謝していました

He just woke up a little earlier and worked a little harder.

少し早く起き より懸命に働きました

And my brother and I were raised with all that you really need:

兄と私は本当に必要なもの全てに恵まれて育ちました

love, strong values

愛　強い価値観

and a belief that with a good education

良い教育への信念

and a whole lot of hard work,

そしてとにかく一生懸命働くこと

that there was nothing that we could not do.

私達に出来ないことなんてありませんでした

I am an example of what's possible

私は一つの例です

when girls from the very beginning of their lives

生まれてからずっと 周りの人達に愛され

are loved and nurtured by the people around them.

育てられた女の子には 一体何ができるのか...

I was surrounded by extraordinary women in my life:

私の人生は素晴しい女性達に囲まれてきました

grandmothers, teachers, aunts, cousins, neighbors,

祖母　先生　叔母　従姉　近所の人

who taught me about quiet strength and dignity.

内に秘めた強さと尊厳を教えてくれました

And my mother, the most important role model in my life,

そして私の母　人生で最も重要なお手本となる人です

who lives with us at the White House

今一緒にホワイトハウスに住んでいて

and helps to care for our two little daughters,

私達の二人の娘　マリアとサーシャの

Malia and Sasha.

お世話を手伝ってくれています

She's an active presence in their lives, as well as mine,

娘達 そして私にとっても 大きな存在です

and is instilling in them

兄と私が教わったのと

the same values that she taught me and my brother:

同じ価値観を教え込んでくれています－

things like compassion, and integrity,

思いやりだとか　誠実さ

and confidence, and perseverance --

自信　忍耐といったものを...

all of that wrapped up in an unconditional love

祖母だけが与えられる

that only a grandmother can give.

無条件の愛に包まれています

I was also fortunate enough to be cherished and encouraged

幸せなことに 力強い男性の手本となる人達にも

by some strong male role models as well,

大切にされ 勇気付けられました

including my father, my brother, uncles and grandfathers.

父　兄　叔父　祖父など...

The men in my life taught me some important things, as well.

彼らもまた大事なことを教えてくれました

They taught me about what a respectful relationship

男性と女性の間の 尊敬すべき関係の

should look like between men and women.

理想像について教えてくれました

They taught me about what a strong marriage feels like:

固く結ばれた結婚とはどういうものかを教えてくれました

that it's built on faith and commitment

信頼と献身 そして

and an admiration for each other's unique gifts.

お互いの能力への賞賛の上に築かれた...

They taught me about what it means

父親になること

to be a father

家族を育てることの

and to raise a family.

意味合いについても...

And not only to invest in your own home

自分の家庭に投資するだけでなく

but to reach out and help raise kids

地域社会に出て 子供がそこで

in the broader community.

育っていくのを支援すること

And these were the same qualities

これらは同じ性質のものです

that I looked for in my own husband,

私自身の夫　バラク オバマに

Barack Obama.

求めたものと...

And when we first met,

最初に会った時

one of the things that I remember is that he took me out on a date.

デートに誘われた時のことを覚えています

And his date was to go with him to a community meeting.

地域集会に連れて行かれたのです

(Laughter)

I know, how romantic.

なんてロマンティックなんでしょうね

(Laughter)

（笑）

But when we met, Barack was a community organizer.

バラクは地域社会のまとめ役でした

He worked, helping people to find jobs

彼は 人々の職探しを手伝ったり

and to try to bring resources into struggling neighborhoods.

困っている人達を手助けしたりしていました

As he talked to the residents in that community center,

コミュニティセンターの住人に話した時

he talked about two concepts.

二つのコンセプトについて語りました

He talked about "the world as it is" and "the world as it should be."

「現状の世界」と「理想の世界」です

And I talked about this throughout the entire campaign.

私は選挙活動中ずっとこの話をしました

What he said, that all too often,

彼が言ったことは　私達はいつも

is that we accept the distance between those two ideas.

この二つの間の距離を受け入れてしまっている

And sometimes we settle for the world as it is,

そして時には現状の世界に甘んじている

even when it doesn't reflect our values and aspirations.

例えそれが私達の価値観や大志を反映していなくても...

But Barack reminded us on that day,

その日バラクは私達に思い出させたのです

all of us in that room, that we all know

その部屋にいた私達全員が わかっていることを

what our world should look like.

理想の世界とはどんなものか...

We know what fairness and justice and opportunity look like.

公平さ 正義 機会とはどんなものか

We all know.

私達は皆知っているのです

And he urged the people in that meeting,

彼は参加していた人達に

in that community,

呼び掛けました

to devote themselves to closing the gap

この二つの間のギャップを埋めるのに

between those two ideas,

身を捧げましょうと

to work together to try to make the world as it is

現状の世界と理想の世界が

and the world as it should be, one and the same.

一つになるように共に働きましょうと...

And I think about that today because I am

今日これを話そうと思ったのは

reminded and convinced that all of you in this school

この学校にいる皆さんが

are very important parts of closing that gap.

ギャップを埋めるとても重要な要素だと確信したからです

You are the women who will build the world as it should be.

皆さんは理想の世界を築き上げる女性です

You're going to write the next chapter in history.

次の歴史を刻むのはあなた達です

Not just for yourselves, but for your generation

自分達の為だけでなく 同世代みんなの為に

and generations to come.

そして次の世代の人達のために...

And that's why getting a good education

その為には 良い教育を受けることが

is so important.

とても重要です

That's why all of this that you're going through --

だからこそ 皆さんが経験していること－

the ups and the downs, the teachers that you love and the teachers that you don't --

いいことも悪いことも 好きな先生もそうでない先生も－

why it's so important.

なぜそんなに重要なのか？

Because communities and countries and ultimately the world

それは 地域社会も 国も そして最終的には世界も

are only as strong as the health of their women.

女性の健康を越えて強くはなれないからです

And that's important to keep in mind.

大事なことなので心に留めておいて下さい

Part of that health includes an outstanding education.

健康には際立った教育が含まれます

The difference between a struggling family and a healthy one

苦悶する家族と健全な家族の違いは

is often the presence of an empowered woman

自立した女性が

or women at the center of that family.

家族の中心にいるか否かです

The difference between a broken community and a thriving one

衰退した地域社会と繁栄した地域社会の違いは

is often the healthy respect between men and women

男女間に健全な尊重があるか否かです

who appreciate the contributions each other makes to society.

お互いの社会への貢献に感謝すべきです...

The difference between a languishing nation

衰退した国と

and one that will flourish

繁栄した国の違いは

is the recognition that we need equal access to education

男子にも女子にも均等な教育の機会が必要なことを

for both boys and girls.

認識するか否かです

And this school, named after the U.K.'s first female doctor,

この学校は 英国初の女性の医者にちなんで名付けられ

and the surrounding buildings named for Mexican artist Frida Kahlo,

Mary Seacole,

「黒人のナイチンゲール」

the Jamaican nurse known as the "black Florence Nightingale,"

として知られるジャマイカの看護婦メアリ シーコール

and the English author, Emily Bronte,

そして英国の作家エミリー ブロンテに由来しており

honor women who fought sexism, racism and ignorance,

性差別や人種差別 無教育と闘い

to pursue their passions to feed their own souls.

自らの魂を満たすために情熱を求めた女性を称えています

They allowed for no obstacles.

どんな障害も物ともしませんでした

As the sign said back there, "without limitations."

後ろに書かれている「限界はない」というように

They knew no other way to live

彼女達は他に生きる道を知りませんでした

than to follow their dreams.

自らの夢を追いかける以外に...

And having done so, these women

その結果 彼女達は

moved many obstacles.

幾多の障害を除去しました

And they opened many new doors

そして新たな扉を開いたのです

for millions of female doctors and nurses

何百万もの女性の医者や看護婦

and artists and authors,

芸術家や作家が

all of whom have followed them.

後に続きました

And by getting a good education,

良い教育を受けることで

you too can control your own destiny.

あなたも自分の運命を決めらます

Please remember that.

覚えておいて下さい

If you want to know the reason why I'm standing here,

私がここに立っている理由は

it's because of education.

教育のお陰です

I never cut class. Sorry, I don't know if anybody is cutting class.

私は授業をサボったことはありません　そういう人がいるか知らないけれど

I never did it.

私は決してサボりませんでした

I loved getting As.

良い成績を取るのが大好きでした

I liked being smart.

賢くなるのが好きでした

I liked being on time. I liked getting my work done.

時間通りが好きでした　成し遂げるのが好きでした

I thought being smart was cooler than anything in the world.

賢くなるのは世界で何よりカッコいいと思いました

And you too, with these same values,

あなたも 同じ価値観を持てば

can control your own destiny.

自分の運命を決められるようになります

You too can pave the way.

道を切り開けるようになります

You too can realize your dreams,

夢を実現できるようになります

and then your job is to reach back

そうしたら今度はあなたが

and to help someone just like you do the same thing.

他の人が同じことをするのを助けてあげて下さい

History proves that it doesn't matter

歴史が証明しています

whether you come from a council estate

公営住宅団地出身であろうが

or a country estate.

田舎の出身であろうが関係ありません

Your success will be determined

あなたの成功は

by your own fortitude,

あなたの不屈の精神に

your own confidence, your own individual hard work.

あなたの自信に そして懸命さによって決まります

That is true. That is the reality of the world that we live in.

それが私達の住む世界の現実なのです

You now have control over your own destiny.

And it won't be easy -- that's for sure.

But you have everything you need.

Everything you need to succeed,

My husband works in this big office.

私の夫は大きなオフィスで働いています

They call it the Oval Office.

オーバル オフィスと呼ばれています

In the White House, there's the desk that he sits at --

ホワイトハウスには 彼が向かう机があります

it's called the Resolute desk.

レゾルート デスクと呼ばれています

It was built by the timber of Her Majesty's Ship Resolute

レゾルート号という船の木材から作られ

and given by Queen Victoria.

ビクトリア女王から贈られたものです

It's an enduring symbol of the friendship between our two nations.

英米間の永続的な親善のシンボルです

And its name, Resolute,

そして レゾルート という名前は

is a reminder of the strength of character that's required

人格の強さを思い起こさせます

not only to lead a country,

国をリードするだけではなく

but to live a life of purpose, as well.

目的のある人生を送る為にも必要な...

And I hope in pursuing your dreams, you all remain resolute,

夢を追いかける中で　固い決意を持ち

that you go forward without limits,

限界なく突き進み

and that you use your talents -- because there are many; we've seen them;

才能を活かして欲しいです 沢山の才能があるのですから

it's there --

間違いなくあります

that you use them to create the world as it should be.

理想の世界を作り上げる為に使って下さい

Because we are counting on you.

皆さんに期待していますから

We are counting on every single one of you

皆さん一人ひとりにです

to be the very best that you can be.

皆さんが本当のベストを尽くすことを...

Because the world is big.

世界は大きいのです

And it's full of challenges.

そして挑戦に満ちています

And we need strong, smart, confident young women

強く 賢く 自信に満ちた 若い女性に

to stand up and take the reins.

統率してもらわなければならないのです
