My dad always warned me that flies were the scum of the earth and that I should never, I repeat, never allow them to land on my food.

父はいつも私に「ハエは地球のカスだ」と警告していました。だから、絶対に、絶対に、私の食べ物に落下させてはいけません。

They’ll vomit! They’ll poop! They’ll spread contagious diseases and you will die!

ハエは吐いちゃう、うんこする、感染症を蔓延するので、あなたは死んちゃうのよ！

I felt a bit like receiving an abstinence lecture, to be honest.

In a recent survey, Orick asked participants, "if you were at a restaurant, which critter would make you drop your fork? Rodents? Cockroaches? Flies? Ants? Or snakes?"

61% of people said they would bounce if they saw cockroaches, but scientists are warning that flies are actually twice as germy as cockroaches.

And they’re specifically referring to those pesky houseflies that can be found anywhere. After all, there are over 90,000 different species of flies.

特に、どこにでもいる厄介なイエバエのことを指しているのです。ハエは9万種以上いると言われています。

So, what’s the real deal on flies and food? Flies do gross things like eat garbage and poop and rotting animal carcasses.

では、ハエと食べ物の本当の関係はどうなのでしょうか？ハエはゴミやウンコ、腐った動物の死骸などを食べるような気持ち悪いことをします。

All those germs from the gross stuff they think is delicious gets transferred to their legs and small hairs all over their body.

美味しいと思う気持ち悪いものから出た菌が、足や体中の小さな毛に移ってしまうんです。

It only takes a second for them to transfer those germs to your food or to your body.

その菌が食べ物や体に移ってしまうのは、ほんの一瞬です。

It’s also true that flies can’t chew, so in order to eat, they spit enzymes on their food to dissolve it and then slurp it up.

ハエは噛むことができないので、食べるために酵素を吐き出して餌を溶かし、それをすすりながら食べていることも事実です。

And yet another solid truth is that flies can carry cholera, dysentery, and typhoid.

コレラ、赤痢、腸チフスを媒介するというのも確かな事実です。

But, notice most people don't get those diseases, which brings me to the rational side of things.

しかし、ほとんどの人はそのような病気にはならないので、理性的な面もあることに気づかされます。

Flies that are festering on food can definitely make you sick, so if there’s a bunch of flies feeding on a rotting apple—you probably shouldn’t eat it!

食べ物についたハエが化膿していると、間違いなく病気になりますから、腐ったリンゴにハエがたくさんついていたら、たぶん食べないほうがいいでしょうね。

But when they land on food for a few seconds, it’s unlikely that it’ll transfer enough bacteria to make you sick.

しかし、数秒間食べ物に付着したところで、病気になるほどの菌が移ることはまずないんです。

It’s also a misconception that they poop every time they land. That would be a lot of tiny fly bowel movements.

また、着陸するたびにウンチをするというのは誤解です。それだと、小さなハエの排便がたくさんあることになります。

They might spit on your food if they’re intending to eat it, but it’s the bacteria that’s stuck to their body that actually spreads disease and makes people sick.

食べるつもりなら唾を吐くかもしれませんが、実際に病気を広げて人を病気にするのは、体に付着した細菌です。

Long story short: fly vomit is your friend, fly bodies? Not so much.

簡単に言うと、ハエの嘔吐はあなたの友達ですが、ハエの死体はそんなものではないです。
