And I come from a long way.

今まで いろいろなところで

I've been telling a story that has been so painful for me.

僕の辛い体験をみんなに話してきた

It's been a tough journey for me, traveling the world,

世界中を回ったり

telling my story in form of a book.

僕の体験をまとめた本を書いたり

And also telling it like now.

講演をするのは大変だった

And also, the easiest one was

でも音楽で思いを伝える方が―

when I was doing it in form of a music.

僕は得意だったから

So I have branded myself as a war child.

自ら「ウォー チャイルド」とレッテルを貼って 歌手をしている

I'm doing this

僕の活動で

because of an old lady in my village now,

故郷の村で子どもを失った母親が

who have lost her children.

どんなに悲しみ

There is no newspaper to cover her pain,

社会の変化を望んでいるかを

and what she wants to change in this society.

新聞に代わってみんなに伝えたい

And I'm doing it for a young man

それと 文字が書けなくて

who want to create a change and has no way to project his voice

社会を変えようという意見を伝えられない 若者の声を

because he can't write.

僕は代弁しているんだ

Or there is no Internet, like Facebook, MySpace,

僕の国にはインターネットもないから

YouTube, for them to talk.

若者には世界の人と話す機会がない

Also one thing that kept me pushing this story,

こんな辛い体験を話していられるのは

this painful stories out, the dreams I have,

僕が見る夢のせいかもしれない

sometimes, is like the voices of the dead,

死んでしまった人が夢に出て

that I have seen

僕に言うのさ

would tell me, "Don't give up. Keep on going."

「あきらめるな 負けちゃだめだ」ってね

Because sometime I feel like stopping and not doing it,

こんな話をするのはもう嫌だと思うときもある

because I didn't know what I was putting myself into.

活動を始めた意図も分からなくなった

Well I was born in the most difficult time,

確かに 生まれた時代が悪かった

when my country was at war.

僕の国は戦争中で

I saw my village burned down.

自分の住む村が焼き払われ

The world that meant a lot to me, I saw it

僕を取り巻く世界が

vanish in my face.

目の前でまるごと消えてしまった

I saw my aunt in rape when I was only five.

叔母さんがレイプされたのを見たのは5歳のとき

My mother was claimed by the war.

母は戦争で命を落とし

My brothers and sisters were scattered.

兄弟姉妹は行方不明になった

And up to now, me and my father

僕と父の間には亀裂が入り

were detached and I still have issues with him.

今でも溝はうまっていない

Seeing people die every day,

毎日人が死ぬのを見て

my mother crying,

母は泣いていた

it's like I was raised in a violence.

僕は「暴力」に育てられたんだ

And that made me call myself a war child.

だから「戦争の落とし子」ってわけさ

And not only that, when I was eight

それに実際 ８歳の頃から

I became a child soldier.

子ども兵をしていた

I didn't know what was the war for.

戦争の理由なんて知らない

But one thing I knew

ただ頭の中に

was an image that I saw that stuck in my head.

ある種のイメージがこびりついていて

When I went to the training camp I say,

僕は訓練所へ行って こう言った

"I want to kill as many Muslims,

「イスラム教徒やアラブ人を－

and as many Arabs, as possible."

たくさん殺してやるんだ」

The training wasn't easy, but that was the driving force,

厳しい訓練に耐えられたのは

because I wanted to revenge for my family.

殺された家族や村の人々への

I wanted to revenge for my village.

復讐がしたかったからさ

Luckily now things have changed

でも今はそんなことは考えていない

because I came to discover the truth.

やっと真実が分かったんだ

What was actually killing us wasn't the Muslims,

僕達を殺していたのはイスラム教徒でも

wasn't the Arabs.

アラブ人でもなかった

It was somebody sitting somewhere manipulating the system,

悪いのは世の中の仕組みを上手く利用して

and using religion to get what they want to get out of us,

宗教の名目で僕達の物を奪うやつらなんだ

which is the oil, the diamond,

やつらが石油やダイヤモンド

the gold and the land.

金や土地まで取り上げているんだ

So realizing the truth gave me a position to choose:

この真実に気付いた僕は考えた

should I continue to hate, or let it go?

イスラム教徒を憎んでも仕方ない

So I happened to forgive. Now I sing

今ではイスラム教徒と一緒に

music with the Muslims. I dance with them.

歌ったり踊ったりしているよ

I even had a movie out called "War Child,"

僕の映画『ウォー チャイルド』に

funded by Muslim people.

イスラムの人が出資してくれた

So that pain has gone out.

もう彼らを恨んではいない

But my story is huge.

話すことがたくさんあるから

So I'm just going to go into a different step now,

そろそろ別のことを始めよう

which is easier for me.

そのほうが僕は やり易い

I'm going to give you poem

I talk about my story.

これは僕が味わった

One of the journey that I tread

辛い経験のひとつ

when I was tempted to eat my friend because we had no food

仲間を食べようと思うほど空腹な状態で

and we were like around 400.

400人近くで歩き回っていたけど

And only 16 people survived that journey.

生き延びたのは僕を入れて16人だけ

So I hope you're going to hear this.

そんな事を歌っている

My dreams are like torment.

僕の人生 辛いことばかりさ

My every moment.

いつだって頭の中に

Voices in my brain, of friends that was slain.

聞こえてくるのは 殺された仲間の声

Friends like Lual who died by my side,

僕のそばで お腹をすかせて

of starvation.

友達が死んだ

In the burning jungle, and the desert plain.

火が燃え広がるジャングルや不毛の地で

Next was I, but Jesus heard my cry.

死なずにいるのは 神様のおかげ

As I was tempted to eat the rotten flesh

僕が仲間の死体を食べようとするのを

of my comrade,

天から見ていて

he gave me comfort.

哀れんでくれたのさ

We used to raid villages,

僕達は村を襲って

stealing chickens, goats and sheeps,

家畜や食べられそうな物を

anything we could eat.

根こそぎ奪い取った

I knew it was rude, but we needed food.

悪いことだけど 食料が必要だから

And therefore I was forced to sin,

仕方なく 罪を犯した

forced to sin to make a living,

生きるために やったことさ

forced to sin to make a living.

罪を犯すか 飢えて死ぬかだ

Sometimes you gotta lose to win.

勝ち残るための 犠牲はつきもの

Never give up. Never give in.

とにかく 諦めないことだ

Left home at the age of seven.

７歳で家を出て

One year later, live with an AK-47 by my side.

８歳には ライフルが手放せない生活

Slept with one eye open wide.

眠る時も 片目は開けたまま

Run, duck, play dead and hide.

走って かがんで さもなくば死だ

I've seen my people die like flies.

みんな虫けらみたいに死んでいった

But I've never seen a dead body,

自分で殺した死体を

at least one that I've killed.

間近で見たことはない

But still as I wonder, I won't go under.

まだ迷ったりするけど くじけたりしない

Guns barking like lightning and thunder.

稲妻のように鳴り響く銃声に囲まれた環境

As a child so young and tender,

幼くて気弱な子どもだった僕が

Words I can't forget I still remember.

今でも忘れられないのは

I saw sergeant command raising his hand,

後退するな 降参するなと

no retreat, no surrender.

腕を振り上げる軍曹の言葉

I carry the banner of the trauma.

まだトラウマを抱えてるよ

War child, child without a mama,

僕は戦争に育てられた 母なし子

still fighting in the saga.

この先も戦い続けるさ

Yet as I wage this new war I'm not alone in this drama.

ただ これからは一人ぼっちの戦いじゃない

No sit or stop, as I reach for the top

有名になったって そこで手を止めたりしない

I'm fully dedicated like a patriotic cop.

警察官並みの愛国心で

I'm on a fight, day and night.

毎日を頑張って生き抜くよ

Sometime I do wrong in order to make things right.

世の中の不条理を正すために 悪いこともする

It's like I'm living a dream.

人間らしい生活なんて

First time I'm feeling like a human being.

以前は夢でしかないと思ってた

Ah! The children of Darfur.

ダルフールのお腹をすかせた

Your empty bellies on the telly and now it's you

子どもたちのために

that I'm fighting for.

僕は戦っている

Left home.

故郷には

Don't even know the day I'll ever return.

いつ帰れるか分からない

My country is war-torn.

国は戦争で荒れ果て

Music I used to hear was bombs and fire of guns.

僕は爆弾や銃声を聞いて育った

So many people die that I don't even cry no more.

大勢の人が死に もう涙も枯れ果てた

Ask God question, what am I here for.

神よ 僕の使命を教えてくれ

And why are my people poor.

仲間はみんな貧しいままなのか

And why, why when the rest of the children were learning how to read and write,

どうして 他の国の子どもが読み書きを習っているとき

I was learning how to fight.

僕は戦い方を習っていたのか

I ate snails, vultures, rabbits,

カタツムリにワシやヘビ

snakes, and anything that had life.

どんな生き物だって

I was ready to eat.

食べる気だった

I know it's a shame. But who is to be blamed?

辛かったけど 仕方なかった

That's my story shared in the form of a lesson.

これが僕が人生から学んだ教訓さ

What energized me and kept me going is the music I do.

僕に行動する力を与えてくれたのは音楽

I never saw anybody

今までは誰も

to tell my story to them

僕の話を聞いて

so they could advise me or do therapy.

アドバイスしてくれる人がいなかった

So the music had been my therapy for me.

だから音楽で心の傷を癒してた

It's been where I actually see heaven,

音楽をしているときは

where I can be happy,

本当に心が安らいだし

where I can be a child again, in dances, through music.

踊っていると 子どもに戻ったみたいなんだ

So one thing I know about music:

音楽をやっていると

music is the only thing that has power

その力を感じる

to enter your cell system,

細胞の一つ一つに

your mind, your heart,

神経のすみずみに入り込み

influence your soul and your spirit,

心を激しく揺さぶって

and can even influence the way you live

気付かないうちに生き方にまで

without even you knowing.

影響を与えてしまうのが音楽さ

Music is the only thing that can

音楽が聞こえると誰でも

make you want to wake up your bed

ベッドから起き出して

and shake your leg,

自然に足を動かしてしまう

without even wanting to do it.

それが音楽の持つ力

And so the power music has

音楽の力は

I normally compare to the power love

愛の力と似ていると思う

when love doesn't see a color.

音も愛も盲目さ

You know, if you fall in love with a frog, that's it.

惚れた相手は最高に見えるんだ

One testimony about how I find music

音楽に力があると―

is powerful is when

感じた経験が僕にはある

I was still a soldier back then.

子ども兵だったとき

I hated the people in the north.

僕は北のやつらが嫌いだった

But I don't know why I don't hate their music.

でも北の音楽は嫌いじゃないんだ

So we party and dance to their music.

北の音楽に合わせて踊ったりもする

And one thing that shocked me is one day

アラブ ミュージシャンが

they brought an Arab musician

僕達みたいな兵士の前で

to come and entertain the soldiers.

演奏したことがあった

And I almost broke my leg dancing to his music.

そんな時は夢中で踊った

But I had this question.

何でだろうって 不思議だった

So now I'm doing music so I know what the power of music is.

歌手として音楽の力を知った今

So what's happening here?

僕はここで何をしているのか

I've been in a painful journey.

これまで辛い旅をしてきた

Today is day number 233

今日までの233日の間

in which I only eat dinner.

夕食しかとっていない

I don't eat breakfast. No lunch.

朝食も昼食も食べないんだ

And I've done a campaign called

現在「勝つための犠牲」という

Lose to Win.

キャンペーン中だ

Where I'm losing so that I could win

何かを犠牲にして初めて

the battle that I'm fighting now.

僕は今の戦いに勝つことができる

So my breakfast, my lunch,

食べなかった朝食代と昼食代は

I donate it to a charity that I founded

僕がつくった慈善団体に回して

because we want to build a school in Sudan.

スーダンに学校を建てる資金にする

And I'm doing this because also

この方法を選んだのは

it's a normal thing in my home, people eat one meal a day.

故郷では一日一食で暮らしてるから

Here I am in the West. I choose not to.

こちらでも三食は食べてない

So in my village now, kids there,

村で暮らす子ども達が

they normally listen to BBC, or any radio,

BBCラジオに耳を傾け

and they are waiting to know,

僕が朝食を食べる日

the day Emmanuel will eat his breakfast

つまり学校が建てられる日を

it means he got the money to build our school.

心待ちにしている

And so I made a commitment. I say,

だから僕は公言したんだ

"I'm gonna not eat my breakfast."

「朝食は食べない」ってね

I thought I was famous enough that I would raise the money within one month,

僕ぐらい有名ならすぐ集まると思ったけど

but I've been humbled.

大口をたたかなくて良かった

(Laughter)

So it's taken me 232 days.

ここまで232日かかったけど

And I said, "No stop until we get it."

目標を果たすまで やめない

And like it's been done on Facebook, MySpace.

フェイスブックやマイスペースで

The people are giving three dollars.

３ドルの寄付ができる

The lowest amount we ever got was 20 cents.

今までの寄付金の最低額は20セント

Somebody donated 20 cents online.

オンラインから らしいけど

I don't know how they did it.

どうやって やったんだろう

(Laughter)

But that moved me.

でも嬉しかった

And so, the importance of education to me

僕にとって教育はとても大切だ

is what I'm willing to die for.

僕はそれを実感しているから

I'm willing to die for this,

どうしても実現したい

because I know what it can do to my people.

教育で得られるものは大きい

Education enlighten your brain,

いろいろなことを知れば

give you so many chances,

機会も広がるし

and you're able to survive.

人生も上手くいく

As a nation we have been crippled.

不自由に苦しんでいる故国では

For so many years we have fed on aid.

みんな援助に頼って生活している

You see a 20-years-old, 30-years-old

難民キャンプで暮らしている

families in a refugee camps.

20代や30代の若者は

They only get the food that drops from the sky, from the U.N.

国連が空から落とす食料を食べているだけ

So these people,

それが僕らの現状だ

you're killing a whole generation if you just give them aid.

援助物資をあげるだけでは 若者はダメになる

If anybody want to help us

本当に僕達を救いたいなら

this is what we need.

違った方法がある

Give us tools. Give the farmers tools.

僕達には農機具が必要なんだ

It's rain. Africa is fertile. They can grow the crops.

雨が降れば食物が育つ土地はあるのだから

(Applause)

Invest in education.

教育に投資してほしい

Education so that we have strong institution

しっかりした教育ができれば

that can create a revolution to change everything.

社会を変える流れを生み出せる

Because we have all those old men

アフリカで戦争に明け暮れてきた

that are creating wars in Africa. They will die soon.

年寄り連中は いずれ亡くなる

But if you invest in education

でも 教育に力を注げば

then we'll be able to change Africa.

アフリカは変えられるはず

That's what I'm asking.

それが僕の望みなんだ

(Applause)

So in order to do that,

そのために

I founded a charter called Gua Africa,

グア アフリカを設立して

where we put kids in school.

子どもを学校に通わせている

And now we have a couple in university.

数人は大学まで進学した

We have like 40 kids, ex-child soldiers

40人は元子ども兵だ

mixed with anybody that we feel like we want to support.

支援が必要な人たちは誰でも受け入れる

And I said "I'm going to put it in practice."

必ず実現させると言っているので

And with the people that are going to follow me and help me do things.

僕の言葉を信じてみんなが助けてくれる

That's what I want to do to change,

だから こうして活動することで

to make a difference in the world.

少しでも変わってくれればと思うんだ
