As a photographer for National Geographic, I've portrayed it for many.

But five years ago, I went on a personal journey.

I wanted to visualize the story of life.

生命の物語を映像にしようと思いました

It's the hardest thing I've ever attempted,

こんなに大変な取り組みは初めてで 何度も投げ出したくなりました

and there have been plenty of times when I felt like backing out.

But there were also revelations.

And one of those I'd like to share with you today.

I went down to a remote lagoon in Australia, hoping to see the Earth

オーストラリアの僻地にある入り江を訪ねました 30億年前の地球を見たかったのです

the way it was three billion years ago,

back before the sky turned blue.

空がまだ青くなかった地球の姿を

There's stromatolites down there --

そこにはストロマトライトがあります 光合成を行う最初の生物です

the first living things to capture photosynthesis --

and it's the only place they still occur today.

ストロマトライトが現存する唯一の場所です

Going down there was like entering a time capsule,

まるでタイムカプセルへ引き込まれるような旅でした

and I came out with a different sense of myself in time.

時間を遡って生まれ変わったような体験をしました

The oxygen exhaled by those stromatolites

ストロマトライトが放出した酸素を

is what we all breathe today.

今日 我々が吸っています

Stromatolites are the heroes in my story.

物語の主人公はストロマトライトです

I hope it's a story that has some resonance for our time.

この物語は現代にも訴えかけると思います

It's a story about you and me, nature and science.

あなたと私 自然と科学の物語です

And with that said, I'd like to invite you for

a short, brief journey of life through time.

時を越えた生命の旅路に しばしお連れします

Our journey starts in space, where matter condenses into spheres over time ...

長い時間を掛けて 物質が球体に凝縮しました

solidifying into surface, molded by fire.

凝固した地表を 炎が形作りました

The fire gave way, Earth emerged -- but this was an alien planet.

炎は消え大地が現れます しかし ここは見知らぬ惑星です

The moon was closer; things were different.

月が近く 何もかもが違っていました

Heat from within made geysers erupt -- that is how the oceans were born.

内からの熱で間欠泉が噴出しました 海の誕生です

Water froze around the poles and shaped the edges of the Earth.

極地の水は凍りつき 地球の果てができました

Water is the key to life, but in frozen form, it is a latent force.

水は命の源です しかし 凍った水は眠っています

And when it vanishes, Earth becomes Mars.

水がなくなれば 地球は火星と化します

But this planet is different -- it's roiling inside.

しかし この惑星は別でした 内部は火の玉です

And where that energy touches water, something new emerges: life.

そのエネルギーが水に触れた時 生命が誕生しました

It arises around cracks in the Earth.

生命は大地の亀裂に沿って目覚めました

Mud and minerals become substrate; there are bacteria.

泥と鉱物が生命の基盤です 細菌ができました

Learn to multiply, thickening in places ...

増殖を始め 密度が高まります

Growing living structures under an alien sky ...

見知らぬ空の下 生命が形取られました

Stromatolites were the first to exhale oxygen.

ストロマトライトが酸素を放出しました

And they changed the atmosphere.

大気が変わりました

A breath that's fossilized now as iron.

息吹は酸化鉄の化石となって 今に至ります

Meteorites delivered chemistry, and perhaps membranes, too.

隕石が物質を運んできました 膜もおそらくその一つです

Life needs a membrane to contain itself

生命には自らを包み込む膜が必要です

so it can replicate and mutate.

膜を得て 生命の複製と変異が始まります

These are diatoms, single-celled phytoplankton

これはケイソウ ケイ素の骨格を持った

with skeletons of silicon ...

単細胞のプランクトンです

circuit boards of the future.

未来の回路基板です

Shallow seas nurtured life early on, and that's where it morphed

浅い海は早くから生命を育みました ケイソウはそんな海で

into more complex forms.

より複雑な組織に変形しました

It grew as light and oxygen increased.

光と酸素が増すと共に 成長を繰り返しました

Life hardened and became defensive.

生命は強くなり 身を守るようになりました

It learned to move and began to see. The first eyes grew on trilobites.

動くことを覚え 視覚を得ました 最初に眼を持ったのは三葉虫です

Vision was refined in horseshoe crabs,

視覚が発達したカブトガニは最初に

among the first to leave the sea.

海から上がった生物の一つでした

They still do what they've done for ages, their enemies long gone.

カブトガニは今も同じ営みを続けます 敵は随分昔に潰えました

Scorpions follow prey out of the sea. Slugs became snails.

サソリは獲物を追って海を出ました ナメクジはカタツムリになりました

Fish tried amphibian life. Frogs adapted to deserts.

魚は両生類を試行錯誤し カエルは砂漠に適応しました

Lichens arose as a co-op. Fungi married algae ...

菌類が藻類と手を結んで 地衣類の共同生活体ができました

clinging to rock, and eating it too ... transforming barren land.

地衣類は岩に張り付き 岩を蝕みます 不毛の地が姿を変えました

True land plants arose, leafless at first.

陸生植物が生まれました 葉はありません

Once they learn how to stay upright, they grew in size and shape.

直立することを覚え 植物は大きさと形を発達させました

The fundamental forms of ferns followed,

シダの基本形も後に続きました

to bear spores that foreshadowed seeds.

種子の原型となる 胞子を生んだのです

Life flourished in swamps.

湿地には生命が溢れました

On land, life turned a corner. Jaws formed first; teeth came later.

陸地では生命がさらに発展します 顎が 次に歯ができました

Leatherbacks and tuataras are echoes from that era.

オサガメやムカシトカゲの姿は その時代の名残です

It took time for life to break away from water,

生命は時間をかけて水から離れました

and it still beckons all the time.

今でも水は生命を招き寄せます

Life turned hard so it could venture inland.

生命は内陸に乗り出す強さを得ました

And the dragons that arose are still among us today.

目覚めた竜たちは 今日も我々と共に生きています

Jurassic Park still shimmers in part of Madagascar,

and the center of Brazil,

ブラジルの奥地で息づいています

where plants called "cycads" remain rock hard.

ソテツが 今も頑固に生きています

Forests arose and nurtured things with wings.

森が生まれ 翼のある生物を養いました

One early form left an imprint, like it died only yesterday.

始祖鳥は さも昨日死んだような痕跡を残しました

And others fly today like echoes of the past.

鳥が空を飛びます あたかも過去の残像のように

In birds, life gained new mobility.

鳥は 新たな移動手段を得ました

Flamingos covered continents. Migrations got underway.

大陸にフラミンゴが溢れ 鳥の渡りが始まりました

Birds witnessed the emergence of flowering plants.

鳥は花が咲く植物を目撃しました

Water lilies were among the first.

スイレンは最も太古の花です

Plants began to diversify and grew, turning into trees.

植物は多様化し 大きな樹木になりました

In Australia, a lily turned into a grass tree,

オーストラリアでは ユリがススキノキに姿を変え

and in Hawaii, a daisy became a silver sword.

ハワイでは ヒナギクが ギンケンソウになりました

In Africa, Gondwana molded Proteas.

アフリカのゴンドワナ大地が プロテアを育てました

But when that ancient continent broke up, life got lusher.

太古の大陸が分裂すると 生命は一層豊かになりました

Tropical rainforests arose, sparking new layers of interdependence.

熱帯雨林が生まれ 新たな共生関係を築いたのです

Fungi multiplied. Orchids emerged, genitalia shaped to lure insects ...

菌類は増殖しました 蘭が現れ 生殖器は虫を誘惑しました

a trick shared by the largest flower on Earth.

地球上で最大の花も 採用した作戦でした

Co-evolution entwined insects and birds and plants forever.

共進化は虫と鳥と植物とを 永久に結びつけました

When birds can't fly, they become vulnerable.

飛べない鳥は非力です

Kiwis are, and so are these hawks trapped near Antarctica.

キウィや 南極近辺にのみ生息するタカのように

Extinction can come slowly, but sometimes it arrives fast.

ゆっくりとした絶滅も 一瞬に訪れる絶滅もあります

An asteroid hits, and the world went down in flames.

小惑星が衝突し 世界は炎に包まれました

But there were witnesses, survivors in the dark.

しかし それを目撃した 暗闇の生存者がいました

When the skies cleared, a new world was born.

空が晴れ 新たな世界が生まれました

A world fit for mammals. From tiny shrews [came]

哺乳類に適した世界です 小さな トガリネズミから

tenrecs, accustomed to the dark.

テンレックが生まれ 闇に順応しました

New forms became bats. Civets.

コウモリが登場しました そして ジャコウネコ

New predators, hyenas, getting faster and faster still.

新たな捕食者 ハイエナ ますます速度を上げていきます

Grasslands created opportunities.

草原は可能性をもたらしました

Herd safety came with sharpened senses.

群れの安全を守る 感覚は鋭くなりました

Growing big was another answer, but size always comes at a price.

大型化も一つの方法ですが 大きさは代償を伴います

Some mammals turned back to water.

哺乳類の一部は 水に戻りました

Walruses adapted with layers of fat. Sea lions got sleek.

セイウチは脂肪の層を身に付け アシカは流線型を取りました

And cetaceans moved into a world without bounds.

クジラ目は 境界のない世界へ移りました

There are many ways to be a mammal. A 'roo hops in Oz;

哺乳類の形は様々です オーストラリアで カンガルーが跳ねています

a horse runs in Asia; and a wolf evolves stilt legs in Brazil.

アジアで 馬が駆け ブラジルで オオカミが長い脚を進化させます

Primates emerge from jungles, as tarsiers first,

霊長類がジャングルから現れます 最初はメガネザルで

becoming lemurs not much later.

程なくキツネザルに進化しました

Learning became reinforced. Bands of apes ventured into the open.

力を得たサルたちは 開けた土地に乗り出しました

And forests dried out once more. Going upright became a lifestyle.

再び森が枯れ サルは直立した生活を始めました

So who are we? Brothers of masculine chimps,

我々は何者なのでしょうか？ 猛々しいチンパンジーの兄弟？

sisters of feminine bonobos? We are all of them, and more.

優しいボノボの姉妹？ 我々は 皆サルであり それ以上です

We're molded by the same life force.

我々は生命の力で誕生しました

The blood veins in our hands

手には血管は

echoed a course of water traces on the Earth.

まるで地球を流れる水流です

And our brains -- our celebrated brains --

我々の脳 この素晴らしい脳は

reflect a drainage of a tidal marsh.

まるで湿地の潮汐のようです

Life is a force in its own right. It is a new element.

生命こそ力です 新たな成分です

And it has altered the Earth. It covers Earth like a skin.

生命は地球を変えてきました 皮膚のように地球を覆っています

And where it doesn't, as in Greenland in winter,

生命がない冬のグリーンランドは

Mars is still not very far.

まるで火星と同じです

But that likelihood fades as long as ice melts again.

しかし再び氷が溶ければ 違いは歴然とします

And where water is liquid, it becomes a womb

液体の水は 子宮となるのです

for cells green with chlorophyll -- and that molecular marvel

葉緑素で緑に染まる細胞の子宮です この驚くべき分子 葉緑素が

is what's made a difference -- it powers everything.

違いを作り出しました 力の源です

The whole animal world today lives on a stockpile

今日 動物界全体が 植物や藻類が蓄積してきた

of bacterial oxygen that is cycled constantly

酸素で生きています 大気は絶え間なく循環し

through plants and algae, and their waste is our breath,

植物や藻類の息を 我々は吸い

and vice versa.

我々の息を 彼らが

This Earth is alive, and it's made its own membrane.

地球は生きています 地球を包み込む膜も作り出しました

We call it "atmosphere." This is the icon of our journey.

我々は大気と呼びます これが我々の旅の象徴です

And you all here today can imagine and will shape where we go next.
