and normally speaking, a picture like this, for me,

I'm in southern Ethiopia. I'm with the Daasanach.

私は南エチオピアで ダサネッチ族を訪れていました

There's a big family, there's a very beautiful tree,

大家族と とても美しい木があり

and I make these pictures with this very large,

そして私はこれらの写真を この非常に大きくて

extremely cumbersome, very awkward technical plate film camera.

しかもかさばって とても使いにくい 大判カメラで撮っています

Does anybody know 4x5 and 10x8 sheets of film,

4×5 や10×8フィルムなんて 知っている方 おられます？

and you're setting it up, putting it on the tripod.

これをセットして 三脚に取り付けます

I've got the family, spent the better part of a day talking with them.

私はこの家族に出会い 話をして 楽しく過ごしていました

They sort of understand what I'm on about.

彼らは私のしていることを 何となく知っていて

They think I'm a bit crazy, but that's another story.

私をちょっと変だと思っていました まあ それはいいんです

And what's most important for me is the beauty and the aesthetic,

私にとっての最重要事項は 「美」です

and that's based on the light.

So the light's setting on my left-hand side,

and there's a balance in the communication with the Daasanach,

the family of 30, all ages.

There's babies and there's grandparents,

I'm getting them in the tree and waiting for the light to set,

and it's going, going, and I've got one sheet of film left,

フィルムは残り１枚でした

and I think, I'm okay, I'm in control, I'm in control.

私は思いました いいぞ 順調 順調

I'm setting it up and I'm setting up, and the light's just about to go,

慎重に位置を定めていると そこに光が射し始めました

and I want it to be golden, I want it to be beautiful.

黄金色に美しく輝いてほしい

I want it to be hanging on the horizon so it lights these people,

光が水平線に掛かって ここにいる人々を照らしてほしい

in all the potential glory that they could be presented.

And it's about to go and it's about to go,

さあ来た　来たぞ

and I put my sheet in the camera,

it's all focused,

and all of a sudden there's a massive "whack,"

突然 「ピシャッ」という 大きな音がしました

and I'm looking around, and in the top corner of the tree,

周囲を見回すと 木のてっぺんで

one of the girls slaps the girl next to her,

１人の女の子が隣の女の子を 平手打ちしたんです

and the girl next to her pulls her hair, and all hell breaks loose,

隣の女の子は髪を引っ張って その場は大混乱

and I'm standing there going, "But the light, the light.

私は立ちあがり 「でも光が 光が」

Wait, I need the light. Stay still! Stay still!"

待った 光が必要なんだ 待って！」

And they start screaming,

and then one of the men turns around and starts screaming, shouting,

and the whole tree collapses, not the tree, but the people in the tree.

They're all running around screaming, and they run back off into the village

in this sort of cloud of smoke, and I'm left there standing behind my tripod.

I've got my sheet, and the light's gone, and I can't make the picture.

フィルムを手にしても 光は失われ 写真は撮れません

Where have they all gone? I had no idea.

彼らはどこに行ったのか？ 分かりません

It took me a week, it took me a week to make the picture which you see here today,

１週間ですよ １週間かかって　 今日ここでお見せしている写真を撮りました

and I'll tell you why. (Applause)

なぜできたか お話ししましょう （拍手）

It's very, very, very simple -- I spent a week going around the village,

もうなんとも単純なことです １週間 村の中を回って過ごしたんです

and I went to every single one: "Hello, can you meet at the tree?

一人残らず会って 「やあ 木のところに来てくれませんか？

What's your story? Who are you?"

あなたのこと教えてくれますか？」

And it all turned out to be about a boyfriend, for crying out loud.

そして判明しました あの泣き声や大声は 恋愛沙汰だったんです

I mean, I have teenage kids. I should know.

私には10代の子供がいるので 分かりますが

It was about a boyfriend. The girl on the top, she'd kissed the wrong boy,

あれはボーイフレンド絡みだったんです てっぺんの女の子が他の男の子にキスして

and they'd started having a fight.

それで喧嘩になったという訳です

And there was a very, very beautiful lesson for me in that:

私にとってこれは 非常に素晴らしい教訓となりました

If I was going to photograph these people

威厳と敬意を込めて こういった人達の写真を撮るという

in the dignified, respectful way that I had intended,

私の願いを実現するために

and put them on a pedestal, I had to understand them.

撮影の場に来てもらうためには 彼らを理解する必要があるんです

It wasn't just about turning up. It wasn't just about shaking a hand.

ただ行くだけじゃなく ただ握手をするだけじゃなく

It wasn't about just saying, "I'm Jimmy, I'm a photographer."

ただ「私はジミー 写真家です」 なんて言うんじゃなく

I had to get to know every single one of them,

私は一人残らず 知る必要があったんです

right down to whose boyfriend is who and who is allowed to kiss who.

誰が誰と付き合っていて 誰とならキスしていいのかまでね

So in the end, a week later,

しまいには １週間後

and I was absolutely exhausted,

私は疲労困憊していましたが

I mean on my knees going, "Please get back up in that tree.

ひざまづいて 「あの木に戻って頂けますか

It's a picture I need to make."

写真を撮らなきゃならないんです」

They all came back. I put them all back up in the tree.

皆戻ってきてくれました もう一度木に上がってもらいました

I made sure the girls were in the right position,

女の子たちを 確実に 正しく配置しました

and the ones that slapped, one was over there.

この子が叩いた子 もう一人はあっち

They did look at each other. If you look at it later,

彼女らはお互いをしかと見ていました 後でそれを見ると

they're staring at each other very angrily,

怒りに満ちた目で にらみあっていました

and I've got the tree and everything,

さあ木も全ても整いました

and then at the last minute, I go, "The goat, the goat!

撮影直前になって 気づきます 「ヤギだ！ヤギ！

I need something for the eye to look at. I need a white goat in the middle."

視線を惹きつける物が必要だ 真ん中に白いヤギだ！」

So I swapped all the goats around. I put the goats in.

それで周りにいたヤギと そのヤギを入れ替えました

But even then I got it wrong, because if you can see on the left-hand side,

しかし私はまた間違ったんです 左手の方を見てください

another little boy storms off because I didn't choose his goat.

別の少年が怒って出ていきました 彼のヤギを選ばなかったからです

So the moral being I have to learn to speak Goat as well as Daasanach.

ダサネッチ族だけでなく ヤギとも話しておくべきだったようです

But anyway, the effort that goes into that picture

でもともかく あの写真に費やした労力と

and the story that I've just related to you,

私がちょうど今 お話しした物語以外にも

as you can imagine,

ご想像どおり

there are hundreds of other bizarre, eccentric stories

他にも何百もの 奇想天外な物語が

of hundreds of other people around the world.

世界中の何百という人々に関して 存在します

And this was about four years ago, and I set off on a journey,

４年ほど前のことですが 私は旅を始めました

to be honest, a very indulgent journey.

正直に言えば この旅は 全くの道楽でした

I'm a real romantic. I'm an idealist, perhaps in some ways naive.

すごくロマンチストで理想主義者の私は ある意味 世慣れていないのかもしれません

But I truly believe that there are people on the planet that are beautiful.

でも美しい人々が地球上に存在することを 心から信じています

It's very, very simple. It's not rocket science.

これはすごく単純であり 小難しいことではありません

I wanted to put these people on a pedestal.

彼らに撮影の場へ 集まってほしかったのです

I wanted to put them on a pedestal like they'd never been seen before.

彼ら自身 いまだ見たことがない姿を 撮りたかったんです

So, I chose about 35 different groups,

tribes, indigenous cultures.

They were chosen purely because of their aesthetic,

and I'll talk more about that later.

I'm not an anthropologist, I have no technical study with the subject,

but I do have a very, very, very deep passion,

and I believe that I had to choose the most beautiful people on the planet

and put the two together and present them to you.

About a year ago,

１年ほど前

I published the first pictures,

and something extraordinarily exciting happened.

The whole world came running,

全世界から注目されました

and it was a bizarre experience, because everybody, from everywhere:

変な経験でしたよ あらゆる地域の あらゆる人達が―

"Who are they? What are they? How many are they?

「彼らはどういう人々なんだ？ 何人いるんだ？

Where did you find them? Are they real? You faked it.

どこで彼らと出会ったんだ？ 本物か？ 偽物だろう

Tell me. Tell me. Tell me. Tell me." Millions of questions for which,

教えてよ 教えてったら ねえ！」 数えきれないほどの質問です

to be honest, I don't have the answers.

正直なところ 私も答えを知りません

I really didn't have the answers,

本当に知りませんでした

and I could sort of understand, okay, they're beautiful, that was my intention,

but the questions that I was being fired at,

I could not answer them.

Until, it was quite amusing, about a year ago

somebody said, "You've been invited to do a TED Talk."

ある人がこう言いました 「君はTEDトークに招待されたよ」

And I said, "Ted? Ted? Who's Ted? I haven't met Ted before."

私は言いました 「テッド？テッドって誰？会ったことないよ

He said, "No, a TED Talk." I said, "But who's Ted?

彼は 「いや TEDトークだよ」 「だから誰だい？」と私

Do I have to talk to him or do we sit with each other on the stage?"

「彼に話をするのかい？ それとも 一緒に登壇するのかい？」

And, "No, no, the TED group. You must know about it."

すると「違うってば TEDはグループ名だ 知ってるだろ」

And I said, "I've been in a teepee and in a yurt for the last five years.

私は言いました 「この５年 部族のところを回ってるんだ

How do I know who Ted is? Introduce me to him."

テッドなんて知るはずないだろ 彼に紹介してよ」

Anyway, to cut a long story short, he said, "We have to do a TED Talk."

とどのつまり― 彼は言いました 「TEDトークに出演するんだよ」

Researched. Oh, exciting. That's great!

それで調べました 面白そう！すごい！

And then eventually you're going to go to TEDGlobal.

そうしてTEDGlobalへ 来ることになった訳です

Even more exciting.

いっそう胸が高鳴ります

But what you need to do, you need to teach the people lessons,

でもここでは 人々に教訓を伝えねばなりません

lessons that you've learned on your travels around the world

つまり 世界中を旅して この部族の人々と過ごす中で

with these tribes.

学んできた教訓です

I thought, lessons, okay, well, what did I learn? Good question.

教訓か・・・ 確かにね 私は何を学んだのか？いい質問です

Three. You need three lessons, and they need to be terribly profound.

３つです 必要な教訓は３つ しかもすさまじく深遠でなきゃいけない

(Laughter)

And I thought, three lessons, well, I'm going to think about it.

こう思いました ３つの教訓ね よし これから考えようと

(Applause)

So I thought long and hard, and I stood here two days ago,

それで私はじっくり懸命に考え ２日前この壇上に立ちました

and I had my test run, and I had my cards

リハーサルをして カードをもらい

and my clicker in my hands and my pictures were on the screen,

and I had my three lessons, and I started presenting them,

考えてきた３つの教訓を プレゼンし始めました

and I had this very odd out-of-body experience.

するとそれは とても奇妙な 離脱体験のようでした

I sort of looked at myself standing there, going, "Oh, Jimmy,

なんというか そこに立って 自分を自分が見て

this is complete loads of codswallop.

「おいジミー こんなの戯言の塊だ

All these people sitting here, they've had more of these talks,

ここに座っている人達は皆 もっと話せるし

they've heard more lessons in their life.

人生の教訓をたくさん 聞いてきてもいる

Who are you to tell them what you've learned?

彼らに自分の教えを語ろうなんて お前は何様だ？

Who are you to guide them and who are you to show them

何様なんだよ？ 彼らを導き

what is right, what is wrong, what these people have to say?"

物事の是非を論じるなんてさ 彼らは一体どう思うだろう？」

And I had a little bit of a, it was very private,

そして私は少しだけ― 実は密かに

a little bit of a meltdown.

挫折を味わっていました

I went back, and a little bit like the boy walking away from the tree with his goats,

あの場面にトリップし 例の子らしき少年が ヤギを連れて木から歩いてきました

very disgruntled, going, that didn't work,

ひどく不機嫌です あれは失敗でした

It wasn't what I wanted to communicate.

そんなつもりじゃなかったんです

And I thought long and hard about it, and I thought, well, the only thing

そしてひたすら一生懸命 考えに考えました

I can communicate is very, very basic.

ごくごく基本的な話なら できるはずだと思いました

You have to turn it all the way around.

抜本的な方向転換です

There's only one person I know here, and that's me.

ここにいる知り合いはたった一人 それは自分です

I'm still getting to know myself,

私はいまだに 自己探求を続けています

and it's a lifelong journey, and I probably won't have all the answers,

これは一生の旅です 全ての答えを得ることはないでしょう

but I did learn some extraordinary things on this journey.

でもこの旅で私は すごい事をいくつか学びました

So what I'm going to do is share with you my lessons.

その学びをこれから 皆さんにお伝えしようと思います

It's a very, as I explained at the beginning, very indulgent, very personal,

これらの写真をなぜ またどのように撮ったのかは

how and why I made these pictures,

最初にお話ししたとおり あくまでも私の個人的な道楽です

and I leave it to you as the audience to interpret what these lessons

ですから これらの学びの 私にとっての意味とか

have meant to me, what they could perhaps mean to you.

皆さんにとって意味があるのかという 解釈はお任せします

I traveled enormously as a child.

私は子供の頃 旅ばかりしていました

I was very nomadic. It was actually very exciting.

見事な放浪者で これは実は非常にワクワクするものでした

All around the world,

世界中を巡りながら

and I had this feeling that I was pushed off at great speed

私はすごい勢いで 背中を押されて

to become somebody, become that individual, Jimmy.

ジミーという一人の人間に なっていく感じがしました

Go off into the planet, and so I ran, and I ran,

世界へと押し出され 走りまくっていました

and my wife sometimes kids me, "Jimmy, you look a bit like Forrest Gump,"

but I'm, "No, it's all about something, trust me."

でも私は 「いや 無駄足じゃないんだ 信じてよ」

So I kept running and I kept running, and I sort of got somewhere

and I sort of stood there and looked around me and I thought, well,

そこに立ち 周りを見回して 考えました―

where do I belong? Where do I fit?

私の居場所はどこか？ 私に合う場所はどこか？

What am I? Where am I from? I had no idea.

So I hope there aren't too many psychologists in this audience.

皆さんの中に心理学者が そう多くは おられませんように

Perhaps part of this journey

たぶんこの旅の目的の１つは

is about me trying to find out where I belonged.

So whilst going, and don't worry, I didn't when I arrived with these tribes,

I didn't paint myself yellow and run around with these spears and loincloths.

But what I did find were people that belonged themselves,

and they inspired me, some extraordinary people,

彼らは刺激的でした 卓越した人々だったんです

and I'd like to introduce you to some heroes of mine.

私のヒーローを何人か 皆さんにご紹介しましょう

They're the Huli.

彼らはフリ族です

Now, the Huli are some of the most extraordinarily beautiful people

フリ族は地球上でも とびぬけて美しい人々です

on the planet.

They're proud. They live in the Papua New Guinean highlands.

パプアニューギニア高地に住む 誇り高き部族です

There's not many of them left, and they're called the Huli wigmen.

あまり多くは残っていません 彼らは「ウィッグマン」と呼ばれます

And images like this, I mean, this is what it's all about for me.

こういう画像が 全てを語っています

And you've spent weeks and months there talking with them, getting there,

何週間も 何か月もそこで過ごし 彼らと語らい よく知り合いました

and I want to put them on a pedestal, and I said, "You have something

撮影の場に来てもらおうと こう言いました 「皆さんには光るものがある

that many people have not seen.

多くの人は見たことのないものです

You sit in this stunning nature."

この見事な自然の中で 撮らせてください」

And it really does look like this, and they really do look like this.

本当にこんなふうです

This is the real thing.

これが真の姿です

And you know why they're proud? You know why they look like this,

なぜ彼らが誇り高いのか？ なぜこんな姿なのか？

and why I broke my back literally

そしてなぜ私が 文字通り「骨を折って」

to photograph them and present them to you?

これらの写真を撮り 皆さんにお見せしているのか？

It's because they have these extraordinary rituals.

それは彼らの 素晴らしい儀式のためです

And the Huli have this ritual: When they're teenagers,

フリ族の行う儀式とはこれです 彼らは10代になると

becoming a man, they have to shave their heads,

成人になるために 頭髪を剃り落すんです

and they spend the rest of their life shaving their heads every single day,

そして彼らはその後の人生で １日も欠かさず頭をそるんです

and what they do with that hair,

その髪を使って

they make it into a creation,

ある創作をします

a creation that's a very personal creation.

非常に私的な創作です

It's their creation. It's their Huli creation.

これが彼らフリ族の 創作物です

So they're called the Huli wigmen.

そう だから「ウィッグマン」と 呼ばれるんです

That's a wig on his head.

頭に載せているのは ウィッグです

It's all made out of his human hair.

全て彼自身の毛で できています

And then they decorate that wig with the feathers of the birds of paradise,

そしてそのウィッグを 極楽鳥の羽で装飾します

and don't worry, there are many birds there.

心配ご無用 鳥なら一杯いるんです

There's very few people living, so nothing to get too upset about,

居住者はわずかですから 目くじらたてる必要はありません

and they spend the rest of their life recreating these hats

彼らは残りの人生を この帽子を作り直すことに費やします

and getting further and further,

羽毛をどんどん足していきます

and it's extraordinary, and there's another group,

they're called the Kalam, and they live in the next valley,

but they speak a completely different language,

they look completely different, and they wear a hat,

and it's built out of scarabs,
