So it's possible to fly almost like a bird.

What is it like to be up there?

飛ぶのはどんな感じなんでしょう？

Yves Rossy: It's fun. It's fun.

そりゃ楽しいですよ

I don't have feathers.

私に翼はありませんが

But I feel like a bird sometimes.

時々鳥になったように感じることがあります

It's really an unreal feeling,

何か現実離れした感じです

because normally you have a big thing,

普通はまわりに大きな

a plane, around you.

飛行機の機体があるわけですが

And when I strap just this little harness,

この小さな翼を

this little wing,

身に着けていると

I really have the feeling of being a bird.

本当に鳥になった気分がします

BG: How did you start to become Jetman?

どのようにしてジェットマンになったんですか？

YR: It was about 20 years ago,

20年くらい前に

when I discovered free falling.

スカイダイビングを始めました

When you go out of an airplane, you are almost naked.

飛行機から飛び出すときは

You take a position like that.

ほとんど何も身に着けていません

And especially when you take a tracking position,

こんな姿勢を取ります

you have the feeling that you are flying.

特にトラッキング姿勢を取ると

And that's the nearest thing to the dream.

飛んでいるように

You have no machine around you.

感じられます

You are just in the element.

空を飛ぶ夢に一番近い形だと思います

It's very short and only in one direction.

周りに機械はありません

(Laughter)

あるのは自分だけです

So the idea was, okay,

ごく短時間で 進む方向は１つしかありませんけど

keep that feeling of freedom,

それで思ったのは

but change the vector and increase the time.

この自由の感覚を保ったまま

BG: So I'm kind of curious, what's your top speed?

方向を変え もっと長く飛べたらということです

YR: It's about 300 km per hour before looping.

知りたいんですが 最高速度はいくらですか？

That means about 190 miles per hour.

旋回する直前で時速300キロくらい

BG: What's the weight of the equipment you're carrying?

だから時速190マイルほどですね

YR: When I exit full of kerosene,

背負っているのは結構重いんでしょうか？

I'm about 55 kilos.

燃料が満タンの飛び出す時点で

I have 55 kilos on my back.

55キロくらいの重さを

BG: And you're not piloting?

背負っています

There is no handle, no steering, nothing?

操縦はしていないんですよね？

It is purely your body,

操縦桿もハンドルもなしに

and the wings become part of the body and vice versa?

体だけを使い 翼が体の一部で

YR: That's really the goal,

体が翼の一部という･･･

because if you put in steering,

それがやりたいことです

then you reinvent the airplane.

操縦桿なんか付けたら

And I wanted to keep this freedom of movement.

ただの飛行機になってしまいます

And it's really like the kid playing the airplane.

私は動きの自由さを保ちたいんです

I want to go down like that.

子どもが飛行機ごっこするように

And up I climb, I turn.

こんな風に下降し

It's really pure flying.

上昇し 旋回したいんです

It's not steering, it's flight.

素の飛行です

BG: What kind of training do you do, you personally, for that?

操縦するのではなく 自分が飛ぶんです

YR: Actually, I try to stay just fit.

このためにどんな訓練を

I don't do special physical training.

しているんでしょう？

I just try to keep my mobility through new activities.

体調を維持するように心がけていますが

For example, last winter I began with kite surfing.

特別なトレーニングは何もしていません

So, new things.

ただ新しいことをして

So you have to adapt.

機敏さを保つようにはしています

I'm quite an experienced manager of systems as a pilot,

たとえば去年の冬は

but this is, really --

カイトサーフィンを始めました

You need fluidity,

新しいことに対しては

you need to be agile

適応が必要になります

and also to adapt really fast.

私はパイロットとして システムのコントロールに関しては

BG: Somebody in the audience asked me,

"How does he breathe up there?"

しかしこれの場合は

Because you're going fast and you're up at 3,000 meters or so.

柔軟さ

YR: Okay, up to 3,000 meters,

軽い身のこなし

it's not such a big problem with oxygen.

素早い適応力が必要になります

But for example, bikers,

they have the same speed.

どうやって息をしているんでしょう？

Just with the helmet, integral helmet,

it's really no problem to breathe.

BG: Describe for me the equipment, since you have it here.

So Breitling's four engines.

速度についても オートバイは

YR: Yeah, two-meter span.

同じくらいのスピードを出せます

Ultra-stable profile.

フルフェイスヘルメットをかぶっていれば

Four little engines,

問題なく呼吸できます

22 kilos thrust each,

装備について説明していただけますか？

turbines, working with kerosene.

エンジンが４つありますね

Harness, parachute.

翼幅２メートルで

My only instruments are an altimeter and time.

非常にしっかりしています

I know I have about eight minutes fuel.

小さなエンジンが４つ

So I just check before it's finished.

それぞれ22kgfの推力がある

(Laughter)

ケロシン燃料ジェットエンジンです

And yeah, that's all.

ハーネスにパラシュート

Two parachutes.

計器は高度計と時計だけです

That means, if I have a problem with the first one I pull,

I still have the possibility to open the second one.

切れる前に知っておきたいので

And this is my life.

(笑)

That's the real important thing about safety.

これで全部です

I did use that during these last 15 years

パラシュートは２つ付けています

about 20 times.

何かのトラブルで

Never with that type of wing, but at the beginning.

最初のが開かなくとも

I can release my wing

２つめのパラシュートで

when I am in a spin or unstable.

助かる可能性があります

BG: We saw the 2009 crossing of the Gibraltar Strait

あとこれは命綱です

where you lost control

安全という点ですごく大切なものです

and then you dived down into the clouds

この15年間で

and in the ocean.

20回ほど

So that was one of those cases where you let the wings go, right?

使う機会がありました

YR: Yeah. I did try in the clouds,

このタイプの翼ではなく 最初の頃の話です

but you lose orientation completely.

きりもみしたり制御不能になったときに

So I did try to take, again,

翼を切り離せるようになっています

a climb altitude.

2009年のジブラルタル海峡横断を見ましたけど

I thought, okay, I will go out.

制御不能になって

But most probably, I did something like that.

雲の中に突っ込み

(Laughter)

海に落ちましたね

BG: Something that is not very safe, the image.

あの時は翼を捨てたわけですね？

YR: You feel great, but --

雲の中で立て直そうとしました

(Laughter)

すっかり方向を見失い

But you have not the right altitude.

もう一度

So the next thing I saw was just blue.

上昇しようとして

It was the sea.

大丈夫だと思っていたんですが

I have also an audible altimeter.

たぶんこんな感じになっていたんだと思います

So I was at my minimum altitude

想像しただけですごく危なそうですね

in that vector -- fast --

気分は良かったんですが

so I pulled that.

高度が正しくなくて

And then I did open my chute.

次の瞬間目にしたのは一面の青でした

BG: So the wings have their own parachute, and you have your two parachutes.

YR: Exactly. There is a rescue parachute for the wing

音声式の高度計が付いているんですが

for two reasons:

高度が最低で

so I can repair it afterward

こんな角度で急降下していたので

and especially so nobody takes that, just on his head.

切り離しました

BG: I see. Maybe come back here.

それからパラシュートを開きました

This is risky stuff indeed.

翼自体に 自分用の２つとは別にパラシュートがあるわけですね

People have died trying to do this kind of thing.

そうです 翼にパラシュートが付いている理由は

And you don't look like a crazy guy; you're a Swiss airline pilot,

２つあります

so you're rather a checklist kind of guy.

回収して修理するためと

I assume you have standards.

誰かの頭の上に落ちないようにするためです

YR: Yeah. I have no checklist for that.

なるほど こちらに戻りましょうか

(Laughter)

危険なのは確かですね

BG: Let's not tell your employer.

このようなことをして亡くなる人もいます

(Laughter)

でもあなたは無謀な人には見えません 航空会社のパイロットでもあり

YR: No, that's really two worlds.

むしろチェックリストを用意して

Civil aviation is something that we know very well.

基準に則ってやる方でしょう

We have a hundred years of experience.

これに関してはチェックリストは何もありません

And you can adapt really precisely.

会社には言わないでおきましょう

With that, I have to adapt to something new.

実際２つの世界は違うんです

That means improvise.

民間航空機の技術は確立されていて

So it's really a play between these two approaches.

100年の経験の蓄積があります

Something that I know very well, these principles.

だからすごく綿密にやることができるのです

For example, we have two engines on an Airbus;

しかしこれの場合は

with only one engine, you can fly it.

新しいことに適応する必要があり

So plan B, always a plan B.

即興をやることになります

In a fighter, you have an ejection seat.

２つのアプローチは本当に違っています

That's my ejection seat.

一方は非常によく分かっていて

So I have the approach of a professional pilot

原則があります たとえば

with the respect of a pioneer

エアバスにはエンジンが２つありますが

in front of Mother Nature.

片方だけでも飛べるようになっています

BG: It's well said.

いつでもプランＢがあるんです

What happens if one of the engines stops?

戦闘機だと射出座席があります

YR: I do a roll.

これが私の射出座席です

And then I stabilize,

私はプロのパイロットとしてのアプローチを取りながら

and according to my altitude, I continue on two or three engines.

母なる自然への畏敬の念を抱いた

It's sometimes possible.

パイオニアでもあるのです

It's quite complicated to explain,

but according to which regime I was,

エンジンが１つ止まったときはどうするんですか？

I can continue on two

and try to get a nice place to land, and then I open my parachute.

BG: So the beginning of the flight

is actually you jump off a plane or a helicopter,

and you go on a dive and accelerate the engines,

and then you basically take off mid-air somewhere.

And then the landing, as we have seen,

arriving on this side of the Channel,

is through a parachute.

着地に適した場所を探し パラシュートを開きます

So just as a curiosity,

where did you land when you flew over the Grand Canyon?

飛行機かヘリからダイビングし

Did you land on the rim, down at the bottom?

エンジンを加速して

YR: It was down on the bottom.

空中のどこかで飛び始めるんですよね

And I came back afterward on the sled of the helicopter back.

そして着地は

But it was too stony and full of cactus on top.

英仏海峡の映像で見たように

(Laughter)

パラシュートを使うわけですが

BG: That's exactly why I asked the question.

そうすると

YR: And also, the currents are quite funny there.

グランドキャニオンを飛んだ時はどこに着地したんでしょう？

There is big thermal activity,

崖の上ですか？ 下ですか？

big difference in altitude also.

底に降りました

So it was much safer for me to land at the bottom.

それからヘリの脚に乗って

BG: I think that right now, many people are asking,

戻ってきました

"When are you developing a double-seater

上の方は石ころが多く サボテンだらけでしたから･･･

so they can fly with you?"

(それで聞いたんです)

YR: I have a standard answer.

それに気流がすごく妙でした

Have you ever seen tandem birds?

上昇気流があって

(Laughter)

高度差もすごくあります

BG: Perfect answer.

だから底に降りる方がずっと安全だったんです

(Applause)

YR: First, to instruct a younger guy.

タンデムになって飛ぶ鳥を見たことありますか？

I want to share it, to do formation flights.

申し分ない答えですね

And I plan to start from a cliff,

like catapulted from a cliff.

YR: Yes, with the final goal to take off, but with initial speed.

Really, I go step by step.

It seems a little bit crazy, but it's not.

It's possible to start already now, it's just too dangerous.

それからカタパルトを使って

崖から飛び出すというのも考えています
