When I'm not fighting poverty, I'm fighting fires

そこでは貧困と戦っていますが それ以外の時は

as the assistant captain of a volunteer fire company.

ボランティア消防団の副団長として 火事と戦っています

Now in our town,

私が住む町では

where the volunteers supplement a highly skilled career staff,

本職の消防士が高い技能を持っているので

you have to get to the fire scene pretty early

ボランティアとして消防団の活動に参加するためには

to get in on any action.

現場に到着する速さが勝負です

I remember my first fire.

初めての火事の時のことです

I was the second volunteer on the scene,

私はボランティアの中で２番目に到着したので

so there was a pretty good chance I was going to get in.

仕事をする機会は十分にありました

But still it was a real footrace against the other volunteers

それでも 団長を見つけて

to get to the captain in charge

任務を割り振ってもらうのに

to find out what our assignments would be.

他のボランティアと激しい競走になりました

When I found the captain,

団長を見つけると

he was having a very engaging conversation

彼は 人生最悪と呼べる日に直面した

with the homeowner,

家の持ち主と

who was surely having one of the worst days of her life.

寄り添うように話をしていました

Here it was, the middle of the night,

真夜中でしたが 家主の女性は

she was standing outside in the pouring rain,

炎に包まれている家の前で

under an umbrella, in her pajamas, barefoot,

打ちつける雨の中 傘を差し

while her house was in flames.

パジャマを着て裸足で立っていました

The other volunteer who had arrived just before me --

私の直前に着いたボランティアは

let's call him Lex Luther --

- （スーパーマンの敵役）レックス・ルーサーと呼びましょう -

(Laughter)

got to the captain first

最初に団長のところに行き

and was asked to go inside

家の中から 家主の犬を

and save the homeowner's dog.

救って来るようにと言われました

The dog! I was stunned with jealousy.

犬ですよ！ 羨ましくてたまりませんでした

Here was some lawyer or money manager

弁護士だったか資産運用者だったか

who, for the rest of his life, gets to tell people

彼は後々まで言い続けるでしょう

that he went into a burning building

自分は燃え盛る建物の中に入り

to save a living creature,

生き物を救ったのだと

just because he beat me by five seconds.

私より５秒前に着いただけなのに

Well, I was next.

次は私の番でした

The captain waved me over.

団長が私を呼び寄せて言いました

He said, "Bezos, I need you to go into the house.

「ベゾス 家の中に入ってくれ

I need you to go upstairs, past the fire,

２階に行って 火の向こうから家主さんの

and I need you to get this woman a pair of shoes."

靴を取って来るんだ」

(Laughter)

I swear.

本当ですよ

So, not exactly what I was hoping for,

期待していたのとは違いましたが

but off I went --

私は家の中に入って階段を上り

up the stairs, down the hall, past the 'real' firefighters,

ホールを抜けて'本物'の消防士たちの脇を通り

who were pretty much done putting out the fire at this point,

- 彼らはほとんど火を消し止めていました -

into the master bedroom to get a pair of shoes.

寝室から靴を取ってきました

Now I know what you're thinking,

皆さんが考えていることはわかります

but I'm no hero.

でも私はヒーローではありません

(Laughter)

I carried my payload back downstairs

私は靴を持って１階に下り

where I met my nemesis

玄関のところで

and the precious dog by the front door.

宿敵とお犬様に会いました

We took our treasures outside to the homeowner,

私たちは取ってきたお宝を外で家主に渡し

where, not surprisingly,

当然のことながら

his received much more attention than did mine.

犬の方が靴よりもずっと注目されました

A few weeks later,

数週間後

the department received a letter from the homeowner

消防団は家主から

thanking us for the valiant effort displayed

火事の際の勇敢な活動に対する

in saving her home.

お礼の手紙をもらいました

The act of kindness she noted above all others:

親切な行為として真っ先に記されていたのは

someone had even gotten her a pair of shoes.

誰かが靴まで持って来てくれたということでした

(Laughter)

In both my vocation at Robin Hood

私は ロビンフッドでの仕事と

and my avocation as a volunteer firefighter,

ボランティア消防士の活動の両方で

I am witness to acts of generosity and kindness

巨大な規模の

on a monumental scale,

寛容で親切な活動を目にしてきました

but I'm also witness to acts of grace and courage

でも それと同時に 個人単位での

on an individual basis.

思いやりや勇気に満ちた行為もありました

And you know what I've learned?

私が学んだのは

They all matter.

どちらも重要だということです

So as I look around this room

この会場の中には

at people who either have achieved,

既に大きな成功を収めた人も

or are on their way to achieving,

成功に向かって進んでいる人も

remarkable levels of success,

いると思いますが

I would offer this reminder:

このことを覚えておいて下さい

don't wait.

「待っているだけではダメだ」

Don't wait until you make your first million

まずは自分が100万ドル稼いでから

to make a difference in somebody's life.

誰かの人生を変えようなど 待っていてはダメです

If you have something to give,

与えられるものがあるのならば

give it now.

今それを与えて下さい

Serve food at a soup kitchen. Clean up a neighborhood park.

炊き出し所で食料を配り 近くの公園を掃除し

Be a mentor.

相談相手になるのです

Not every day is going to offer us a chance

誰かの命を救う機会は

to save somebody's life,

毎日訪れるものではありませんが

but every day offers us an opportunity to affect one.

誰かに影響を与える機会は 毎日あります

So get in the game. Save the shoes.

その機会を逃さず 靴を救うのです
