  • How exactly are these investments being structured? - This is quite interesting,

  • basically a combination of public and private. So you've got Bill Gates, Jack Ma, *Septurn and Zuckerberg

  • they've got a two billion dollar fund and in fact what they are trying to do, very sort of innovative, taking risks, almost like a silicon valley startup.

  • And alongside that, you've got twenty or so governments, uh, promising to double ware mores traditional, much larger R&D budgets, so again, to clean energy.

  • So you've got a lot of big names here, a lot of buzz, but how big is the actual commitment?

  • So it's two billion, and Bill Gates they say, hey, I'm going to put up a billion dollars on my own money and so two billions were on the biggest funds of such sort of research ever.

  • But then you kind of draw back and look at those billionaires if you look at Bezos, you look at Zuckerburg, and you look at Gates together

  • I'll tell that was about two hundred billion dollars so you're looking at totally one percent to that, but I mean you know that it is absolutely a massive number.

  • David, what do you make at this? -Well, for one thing, I think the name is interesting, the breakthrough, uh, were because in fact this is the name of exact enterprise that

  • Zuckerberg and marimuner and

  • have together for science, so implies to me that Zuckerberg might have a little bigger role in this than has been generally discussed.

  • I don't know what kind of scale of contribution he's making to it but I suspected that it is very large

  • I mean, I do think these people really care about energy but it also really surprises me what a wide range of people are involved.

  • There's a bunch of hedge fund billionaires, there's George Soros, Jack Ma from China,

  • you know, it's really an interesting group. I've never seeing this group come together for anything,

  • I think it makes a really strong statement that's desperately needed because let's face it

  • we are in a deep problem with climate change and what I didn't say the word I almost say after deep.

  • But anyway, it is really a problem we gotta do something about it.

  • All that know what is the approach for the coalition and how do we know they are actually going to make progress on?

  • Well, that's the big question. I guess I think sort of what I feel really sure is that as David just said,

  • just the quality of the people involved in this thing and Gates assuming really pushing it forward

  • I mean not today's conference he was giving his speech and next to him is Obama, Modi, Presendent Hollande in France.

  • But what is the action of the approach?

  • So basically, for the fund itself they are going to tie up in University of California, and really I mean, today's the first day got announce,

  • so it's not really clear but one suspects that you know taking their knowledge to from tech startups

  • so just trying look for, very risk taking and in some cases, I think some of the billionaires are going to invest individually

  • so they can, hey, just a few years long enough time for us to make a profit on this.

  • Alright. - Yeah.

How exactly are these investments being structured? - This is quite interesting,
