available, our living space, or the environment. Forward thinking communities today recognize

the need to become a City of Choice. “My name is Nancy Tomkins. I am a business

owner here in the City of Brantford. I’ve been asked to take you on a journey. A journey

that would showcase Brantford’s’ achievements in becoming a Smart City. Come along and let’s

explore our City.”

high paying jobs.”

“Our businesses no longer provide goods and services at only a local level. (pause)

The world is now our stage so that means we have to compete on a global level. A product

made in Brantford is shipped across oceans and continents, in turn our city receives

goods and services from far reaching places. As a result we have to work together to build

a strong, smart economy, one that is innovative and supports business growth.”

“Smart people is really the foundation of a smart city. Without an educated

workforce, we would be challenged to meet the needs of tomorrow.”

“To make this happen everyone must have access to information and technology. We need

to be innovative, creative and adaptive with challenges that face us, always looking for

new ways of doing things. It’s important that support be given by community leaders,

organizations and programs that encourage development and forward thinking by all.”

“A smart environment is about balancing everything that surrounds us and how we use

our natural resources.

“We all share this city so, to be a smart city it’s important that we understand and

support the need for growth and sustainability in business, living, energy supply and energy

use, protecting our natural environment. It’s about all of us taking pride in the city.”

“Smart living describes much of what we rely upon in our city. It’s quality healthcare,

education and safety.”

“Our city is a safe city, a vibrant city with a lot happening! A smart living city

features environments, services and opportunities for everyone such as arts, culture and sports

to name a few. It promotes diversity, recognizes its heritage and its current and past leaders.

It celebrates its accomplishments and embraces the future with optimism and courage.”

“Smart connections ensures that the citizens of the city can move around with various modes

of transportation both safely and efficiently.

“It’s also about communication, being connected, whether it be use of broadband

or Wi-Fi connectivity by business and citizens or as simple as access to computers. It’s

about adapting to technology and the need for innovation tomorrow.”

“Smart governance ensures that what we have as a city we use well and effectively. It

provides roads, bridges, parks, safe drinking water and waste management to its citizens.”

“Smart cities are open and transparent and value the input of citizens, making sure that

information and services are available and accessible to everyone when and where the

community wants it.”

“As you can see Brantford is a resilient community, a community that is driven by nature

to succeed, one that is collaborative. We need to leverage each other...For it takes
