the first time I met the girl in the blue uniform.

青いユニフォームを着た少女に初めて 出会った時のことを

I was eight at the time,

当時私は８歳で

living in the village with my grandmother,

祖母と村で暮らしていました

who was raising me and other children.

祖母は私と他の子供たちを育てていました

Famine had hit my country of Zimbabwe,

飢饉が私の国ジンバブエを襲い

and we just didn't have enough to eat.

私たちには十分な食料もありませんでした

We were hungry.

私たちは飢えていました

And that's when the girl in the blue uniform

そんな時青いユニフォームを着た少女が

came to my village with the United Nations

国連から私たちの村にやって来て

to feed the children.

食糧を配ってくれました

As she handed me my porridge,

彼女が私にオートミールを手渡した時

I asked her why she was there,

何故ここに来たのか聞いてみました

and without hesitation, she said,

ためらわず 彼女はこう言いました

"As Africans, we must uplift all the people of Africa."

「アフリカ人として 私たちはアフリカの すべての人々に希望を持たせなければいけないの」

I had absolutely no idea what she meant.

何を言っているのか 全く分かりませんでした

(Laughter)

（笑）

But her words stuck with me.

でもその言葉は心に残りました

Two years later,

その２年後

famine hit my country for the second time.

飢饉が再び祖国を襲いました

My grandmother had no choice but to send me to the city

祖母は私を町に送り出すしか ありませんでした

to live with an aunt I had never met before.

それまで会った事もない叔母と 暮らす為です

So at the age of 10,

10歳で私は

I found myself in school for the very first time.

初めて学校に行くことになりました

And there, at the city school,

その町の学校で

I would experience what it was to be unequal.

私は「平等でない」という経験をしました

You see, in the village,

ご存知のように村では

we were all equal.

みんなが平等でした

But in the eyes and the minds of the other kids,

しかし学校の子どもたちの心の中では

I was not their equal.

私は同じではなかったのです

I couldn't speak English,

私は英語が話せませんでした

and I was way behind in terms of reading and writing.

読み書きという点で遅れていました

But this feeling of inequality would get even more complex.

そしてこの不平等という感情は より複雑なものとなりました

Every school holiday

学校が休みになる度に

spent back in the village with my grandmother

村に戻って祖母と過ごすことで

made me consciously aware

不平等をはっきり自覚したのです

of the inequalities this incredible opportunity

私だけ学校へ行ける機会は

had created within my own family.

家族が与えてくれたのです

Suddenly, I had much more than the rest of my village.

おかげで私は他の村人より 遥かに恵まれた状況になりました

And in their eyes, I was no longer their equal.

村人にとって 私はもう同じではありません

I felt guilty.

罪悪感を感じました

But I thought about the girl in the blue uniform,

しかし青いユニフォームの 少女の事を考えて

and I remember thinking,

こう思ったのを覚えています

"That's who I want to be --

「あんな風になりたい―

someone like her,

あの子みたいな人に

someone who uplifts other people."

他の人たちに希望を持たせる人に」

This childhood experience led me to the United Nations,

子ども時代のこの経験で 国連での仕事にあこがれ

and to my current role with UN Women,

今はUN Womenで働いています

where we are addressing one of the greatest inequalities

そこでは大きな不平等について 取り組んでいます

that affects more than half of the world's population --

世界の人口の半分以上―女性に影響する

women and girls.

不平等の問題です

Today, I want to share with you

今日 お話しするのは

a simple idea that seeks to uplift all of us together.

私たち皆が一緒に希望を持とうという シンプルなアイディアについてです

Eight months ago,

今から８か月前

under the visionary leadership of Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka,

UN Womenのトップ プムズィレ・ムランボ=ヌクカの

head of UN Women,

先見的なリーダーシップの下

we launched a groundbreaking initiative

私たちは革新的な計画に取り掛かりました

called HeForShe,

「HeForShe」という名称で

inviting men and boys from around the world

世界中の男性や少年を招き入れ

to stand in solidarity with each other and with women,

互いや女性との団結の下に立ち上がり

to create a shared vision for gender equality.

ジェンダーの平等の 共有ビジョンを作るのです

This is an invitation for those who believe in equality

これは男女の平等を信じる人々と それを未だ信じない人々の為の

for women and men,

これは男女の平等を信じる人々と それを未だ信じない人々の為の

and those who don't yet know that they believe.

「招き」なのです

The initiative is based on a simple idea:

この構想は「男女が共有しているものは 男女を分けているものより

that what we share is much more powerful

ずっと強大だ」というシンプルなアイディアを

than what divides us.

基にしています

We all feel the same things.

私たちは同じ事を感じています

We all want the same things,

私たちは同じものを求めています

even when those things sometimes remain unspoken.

たとえ口には出さないとしてもです

HeForShe is about uplifting all of us,

「HeForShe」は全ての男女に

women and men together.

希望を与えようとしています

It's moving us towards an inflection point for gender equality.

ジェンダーの平等の転換点に 向かわせています

Imagine a blank page

何も書かれていないページがあり

with one horizontal line splitting it in half.

横一直線で半分に分かれています

Now imagine that women are represented here,

女性がここにいるとしましょう

and men are represented here.

そして男性がここにいます

In our current population,

現在の人口の中で

HeForShe is about moving the 3.2 billion men,

「HeForShe」は32億人の男性を

one man at a time,

一度に一人ずつ

across that line,

ラインの向こうへ動かしています

so that ultimately, men can stand alongside women

最終的には男性が女性と並んで立ち

and be on the right side of history,

歴史の正しい側に存在し

making gender equality a reality in the 21st century.

21世紀中にジェンダーの平等を 実現する為です

However, engaging men in the movement would prove quite controversial.

しかし この運動に男性を巻き込もうとすると 議論が起こります

Why invite men? They are the problem.

何故男性を招くのか？彼らが問題なのに

(Laughter)

In fact, men don't care, we were told.

実際 男性は関係ないと 言われていました

But something incredible happened when we launched HeForShe.

しかし信じられない事に 「HeForShe」を始めてみると

In just three days, more than 100,000 men

わずか３日で10万人以上の男性が登録し

had signed up and committed to be agents of change for equality.

平等への変革に関わることを 宣言したのです

Within that first week, at least one man in every single country in the world

最初の一週間で 世界中のあらゆる国から 少なくとも１人の男性が

stood up to be counted,

立ち上がり

and within that same week,

同じ週の間に

HeForShe created more than 1.2 billion conversations on social media.

「HeForShe」に関わる ソーシャルメディアでの発信は12億件以上でした

And that's when the emails started pouring in,

それから Eメールが届き始めたのです

sometimes as many as a thousand a day.

一日に千通も届く事がありました

We heard from a man out of Zimbabwe,

ジンバブエ出身の男性から話を聞きました

who, after hearing about HeForShe,

彼は「HeForShe」の事を聞き

created a "husband school."

「夫の学校」を作ったのです

He literally went around his village,

彼は自分の村を巡り

hand-picking all of the men that were abusive to their partners,

妻に虐待を行った男性を全て洗い出し

and committed to turn them into better husbands and fathers.

良き夫、父親となるよう 約束させたのです

In Pune, India, a youth advocate organized an innovative bicycle rally,

インドのプネーでは青年支持者が 自転車ラリーを組織して

mobilizing 700 cyclists

700名のサイクリストを動員し

to share the HeForShe messages within their own community.

「HeForShe」のメッセージを 地域に広めました

In another impact story,

こんな印象的な話もあります

a man sent a very personal note

コミュニティの出来事を書いた

of something that had happened in his own community.

私的な手紙をくれた 男性がいました

He wrote,

それには こう書いてありました

"Dear Madam,

「拝啓

I have lived all of my life

ここに住んでから

next door to a man who continuously beats up his wife.

隣に住む男性が絶えず 彼の妻に暴力を働いているのです

Two weeks ago,

今から２週間前

I was listening to my radio,

ラジオを聞いていると あなたの声が

and your voice came on,

聞こえてきてました

and you spoke about something called the HeForShe,

『HeForShe』 という何かと

and the need for men to play their role.

男性の役割の話をしていました

Within a few hours, I heard the woman cry again next door,

数時間後 隣家から又 女性の叫び声が聞こえてきました

but for the first time,

しかし今回は私も

I didn't just sit there.

じっとしていませんでした

I felt compelled to do something,

何かをしなければならないと感じたのです

so I went over and I confronted the husband.

そこで隣家へ行き 夫に立ち向かいました

Madam, it has been two weeks,

それから２週間

and the woman has not cried since.

女性の叫び声は聞こえていません

Thank you for giving me a voice."

私に声を届けてくれて有難うございました」

Personal impact stories such as these

こうした個人の強く印象に残る話は

show that we are tapping into something within men,

私たちが男性の中の何かを引き出している 証なのですが

but getting to a world where women and men are equal

男女が平等な社会に 到達するという事は

is not just a matter of bringing men to the cause.

男性に行動理由を示す事ではありません

We want concrete, systematic, structural change that can equalize

私たちは男女の政治的、経済的な 社会実現が平等になる

the political, economic and social realities for women and men.

具体的で体系的な構造の 変革を求めているのです

We are asking men to make concrete actions,

私たちは男性に具体的な行動を求め

calling them to intervene at a personal level,

個人的なレベルで 男性たちの行動を変えるよう

to change their behavior.

呼びかけています

We are calling upon governments, businesses, universities,

私たちは政府、ビジネス界、大学に 政策の変革を呼びかけています

to change their policies.

男性リーダーに手本になってもらい

We want male leaders to become role models

彼らの組織の主体を 変えてもらいたいのです

and change agents within their own institutions.

既に多くの有名な男性やリーダーが 行動を促し

Already, a number of prominent men and leaders have stepped up

「HeForShe」に 具体的な参加をしています

and made some concrete HeForShe commitments.

In a few early success stories,

フランスの一流の接客会社「アコール」では

a leading French hospitality company, Accor,

2020年までに18万人の従業員の全てから

has committed to eliminate the pay gap

賃金の格差を取り除くと約束しました

for all of its 180,000 employees by 2020.

The government of Sweden,

男女同権主義の方針で

under its current feminist government,

全ての市民の為 現在の選挙期間に

has committed to close both the employment and the pay gap

for all of its citizens within the current electoral term.

日本では名古屋大学が自分たちの

In Japan, the University of Nagoya

「HeForShe」の共同参画室を作っています

is building, as part of their HeForShe commitments,

それは日本で先導的なジェンダー 研究センターとなるでしょう

what will become one of Japan's leading gender-research centers.

８か月後の今

Now, eight months later,

運動は確立しつつあります

a movement is building.

We are seeing men sign up from every single walk of life,

and from every single corner in the world,

In Europe alone, all the male EU Commissioners

and the members of Parliament of the Swedish and Iceland governments

「HeForShe」に参加しています

have signed up to be HeForShe.

アイスランドの20名に１人の男性が 運動に参加しています

In fact, one in 20 men in Iceland has joined the movement.

親善大使エマ・ワトソンの情熱的な スローガンが

The rallying call of our passionate goodwill ambassador, Emma Watson,

50億回以上も表示され

has garnered more than five billion media impressions,

何十万という世界中の学生たちを 結集させました

mobilizing hundreds and thousands of students around the world

「HeForShe」の学生連合は 100か所以上も結成されました

to create more than a hundred HeForShe student associations.

これは私たちが見たい世界に 向かう「HeForShe」が持つ

Now this is the beginning of the vision that HeForShe has

先見性の兆しです

for the world that we want to see.

アインシュタインは言いました

Einstein once said,

「人間は完全体の一部だが．．．

"A human being is part of the whole ...

自分自身、自分の思考、感情を体験する

but he experiences himself,

他の切り離されたものとして．．．

his thoughts and feelings,

この妄想は 私たちにとって監獄だ．．．

as something separate from the rest ...

私たちの仕事はこの監獄から 解き放たれることである

This delusion is a kind of prison for us ...

思いやりの輪を大きく広げることによって」

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison

アインシュタインが示唆しているように

by widening our circle of compassion."

男女が偉大な完全体の一部なら

If women and men are part of a greater whole,

性別ではなく 分かち合った人間性で 人格が決まると理解し

as Einstein suggests,

「HeForShe」が 我々の解放の手助けとなる事が

it is my hope that HeForShe can help free us to realize

私の望みなのです

that it is not our gender that defines us,

「HeForShe」は男女の夢を引き出しています

but ultimately, our shared humanity.

自分たち自身の夢を

HeForShe is tapping into women's and men's dreams,

家族、子供たち、友人 コミュニティの持つ夢を

the dreams that we have for ourselves,

つまりこういう事です

and the dreams that we have for our families, our children,

「HeForShe」は私たち皆に共に 希望を与えようとしているのです

friends, communities.
