It's a seductive place, isn't it?

I don't live there.

But I did journey on a 27,000-mile trip

この2年間に約４万キロの旅をして

for two years, to the fastest-growing and whitest counties in America.

アメリカで急速に発展している 白人の町々を訪れました

What is a Whitopia?

ホワイトピア(白人理想郷)って何でしょう?

I define Whitopia in three ways:

私は３つの要素で定義しています

First, a Whitopia has posted at least six percent population growth since 2000.

まず第１に 2000年に比べホワイトピアの人口は 少なくとも６％増加しています

Secondly, the majority of that growth comes from white migrants.

第２に 人口増の多くは 白人移住者によるものです

And third, the Whitopia has an ineffable charm,

そして3つ目 ホワイトピアは 言葉にできぬような魅力

a pleasant look and feel,

心地よく見え そして感じるものがあります

a je Ne sais quoi.

To learn how and why Whitopias are ticking,

ホワイトピアの様子を見て なぜ流行るのか知ろうと

I immersed myself for several months apiece in three of them:

私は３か所でそれぞれ数か月 生活してみました

first, St. George, Utah;

最初はユタ州のセント・ジョージ

second, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho;

次にアイダホ州のコーダリーン

and third, Forsyth County, Georgia.

最後にジョージア州のフォーサイス郡

First stop, St. George -- a beautiful town of red rock landscapes.

最初の滞在地 セント・ジョージは 赤い岩の眺めが素晴らしい町でした

In the 1850s, Brigham Young dispatched families to St. George

1850年代にブリガム・ヤングが 綿花を育てるために

to grow cotton because of the hot, arid climate.

And so they called it Utah's Dixie, and the name sticks to this day.

I approached my time in each Whitopia like an anthropologist.

I made detailed spreadsheets of all the power brokers in the communities,

and I threw myself with gusto in these communities.

I went to zoning board meetings,

In St. George, I rented a home at the Entrada,

one of the town's premier gated communities.

There were no Motel 6's or Howard Johnsons for me.

私向けのモーテル６や ハーワード・ジョンソンズは無いので

I lived in Whitopia as a resident, and not like a visitor.

旅行者としてではなく 住人の様にして暮らしました

I rented myself this home by phone.

この家を電話一本で借りたのです

(Laughter)

Golf is the perfect seductive symbol of Whitopia.

ゴルフはホワイトピアでは 贅沢の象徴として完ぺきです

When I went on my journey,

この旅を始めた頃は

I had barely ever held a golf club.

ゴルフクラブなんて持っていませんでしたが

By the time I left, I was golfing at least three times a week.

ここを離れるころには 週に３回はプレイしていましたね

Golf helps people bond.

ゴルフは人々の絆を強めます

Some of the best interviews I ever scored during my trip were on the golf courses.

One venture capitalist, for example, invited me to golf in his private club

that had no minority members.

I also went fishing.

Because I had never fished, this fellow had to teach me

how to cast my line and what bait to use.

I also played poker every weekend.

It was Texas Hold 'em with a $10 buy-in.

My poker mates may have been bluffing about the hands that they drew,

but they weren't bluffing about their social beliefs.

Some of the most raw, salty conversations I ever had

during my journey were at the poker table.

I'm a gung ho entertainer.

I love to cook, I hosted many dinner parties, and in return,

people invited me to their dinner parties,

and to their barbecues, and to their pool parties,

But it wasn't all fun.

Immigration turned out to be a big issue in this Whitopia.

よそ者が住みつくことは ホワイトピアにとって一大事でした

The St. George's Citizens Council on Illegal Immigration

違法移民を問題視する セント・ジョージ市民評議会が

held regular and active protests against immigration,

移住者に対する抗議運動を 繰返し行いました

and so what I gleaned from this Whitopia is what a hot debate this would become.

この問題が どれほど熱い議論へ発展するのか このホワイトピアから情報を得ることとなりました

It was a real-time preview, and so it has become.

私も目の当たりにしましたし 実際に大問題になりました

Next stop: Almost Heaven, a cabin I rented for myself

次の場所は 『Almost Heaven』( まるで天国のよう)

in Coeur d'Alene, in the beautiful North Idaho panhandle.

美しきノース・アイダホにある コーダリーンでは小屋をレンタルしました

I rented this place for myself, also by phone.

この場所を 電話一本で 借りたんです

(Laughter)

The book "A Thousand Places To See Before You Die" lists Coeur d'Alene --

『死ぬまでに一度は行きたい 世界の1000ヵ所』にも挙げられています

it's a gorgeous paradise for huntsmen, boatmen and fishermen.

ハンティング、ヨットや釣り好きにとって この上ないパラダイスです

My growing golf skills came in handy in Coeur d'Alene.

ゴルフの腕が少し上がっていたことが コーダリーンでは好都合でした

I golfed with retired LAPD cops.

元ロサンジェルス警察官と ゴルフをしました

In 1993, around 11,000 families and cops

1993年に警官とその家族 約11,000人が

fled Los Angeles after the L.A. racial unrest,

LAの人種差別騒動の後に ノース・アイダホへ逃れ

for North Idaho, and they've built an expatriated community.

共同体を作り上げたのです

Given the conservatism of these cops,

there's no surprise that North Idaho has a strong gun culture.

In fact, it is said, North Idaho has more gun dealers than gas stations.

So what's a resident to do to fit in?

I hit the gun club.

銃クラブを思いつきました

When I rented a gun, the gentleman behind the counter

was perfectly pleasant and kind,

とても愛想が良く 親切に接してくれましたが

until I showed him my New York City driver's license.

それも私がニューヨーク発行の 運転免許証を見せたときまでで

That's when he got nervous.

途端に彼は ナーバスになりました

I'm not as bad a shot as I thought I might have been.

私は自分の射撃の腕程には 悪い奴に 見えないと思っていたのですが…

What I learned from North Idaho is the peculiar brand of paranoia

that can permeate a community when so many cops and guns are around.

In North Idaho, in my red pickup truck,

I kept a notepad.

And in that notepad I counted more Confederate flags than black people.

In North Idaho, I found Confederate flags

on key chains, on cellphone paraphernalia,

and on cars.

About a seven-minute drive from my hidden lake cabin

私が住む湖岸の隠れ小屋から ７分のところには

was the compound of Aryan Nations,

白人至上主義者による 「アーリア人国家」の

the white supremacist group.

居住区がありました

America's Promise Ministries, the religious arm of Aryan Nations,

アーリア人国家の宗教団体 「America's Promise Ministries」の

happened to have a three-day retreat during my visit.

３日間にわたる瞑想会が 偶然 滞在中にあったので

So I decided to crash it.

(Laughter)

I'm the only non-Aryan journalist I'm aware of ever to have done so.

非アーリア人ジャーナリストで 初の暴挙って分かってましたけどね

(Laughter)

Among the many memorable episodes of that retreat...

...is when Abe, an Aryan, sidled up next to me.

He slapped my knee, and he said, "Hey Rich, I just want you to know one thing.

We are not white supremacists. We are white separatists.

おれたちは白人至上主義者じゃない 白人分離主義者なんだ

We don't think we're better than you,

we just want to be away from you."

ただ一緒に居たくないだけだ」

(Laughter)

Indeed, most white people in Whitopia are neither white supremacists

実際のところ ホワイトピアに住む 多くの白人は 白人至上主義者でも

or white separatists;

白人分離主義者でもなく

in fact, they're not there for explicitly racial reasons at all.

人種的な理由で そこにいるのでは決してなく

Rather, they emigrate there

むしろ そこに移り住んできたのは

for friendliness, comfort, security, safety --

友情、心地よさ、警備や安全を求め ―

reasons that they implicitly associate to whiteness in itself.

つまり 白人同士の繋がりそのものが 理由となっているのです

Next stop was Georgia.

次はジョージアです

In Georgia, I stayed in an exurb north of Atlanta.

アトランタ北部の郊外にある 高級住宅街です

In Utah, I found poker;

ユタではポーカーに興じ

in Idaho, I found guns;

アイダホでは銃を手にし

in Georgia, I found God.

ジョージアでは神を見出しました

(Laughter)

(笑)

The way that I immersed myself in this Whitopia

このホワイトピアに溶け込むために 取った方法は

was to become active at First Redeemer Church,

ファースト・リディーマー教会で 積極的に活動することです

a megachurch that's so huge that it has golf carts

ここは巨大な教会で 教会のメンバーは

to escort the congregants around its many parking lots on campus.

敷地内に数多くある駐車場から ゴルフカートで案内されます

I was active in the youth ministry.

私は青年の部で活動しました

And for me, personally, I was more comfortable in this Whitopia

個人的には このホワイトピアでは

than say, in a Colorado, or an Idaho, or even a suburban Boston.

例えばコロラドやアイダホのユートピア それにボストン郊外よりも心地よく感じました

That is because [there], in Georgia,

なぜならば ここジョージアでは

white people and black people are more historically familiar to one another.

歴史的に白人と黒人が 互いのことをより良く知っていたからです

I was less exotic in this Whitopia.

このホワイトピアでは それ程変な奴には見られませんでしたよ

(Laughter)

But what does it all mean?

私の経験は何を意味するのでしょうか？

Whitopian dreaming, Whitopia migration, is a push-pull phenomenon,

ホワイトピアへの夢つまり移住は プッシュ・プル現象といえます

full of alarming pushes and alluring pulls,

危険に満ちた状況が白人を外へとプッシュし ホワイトピアの魅惑にプルされる

and Whitopia operates at the level of conscious and unconscious bias.

ホワイトピアは意識的、無意識的な偏見が ある中で成り立っています

It's possible for people to be in Whitopia not for racist reasons,

ホワイトピアの存在が人種差別的な 結果を生み出しているとしても

though it has racist outcomes.

差別のために白人が そこに住んでいるのだとは限りません

Many Whitopians feel pushed by illegals,

違法行為、社会福祉の乱用 マイノリティー、過密な人口や

social welfare abuse, minorities, density, crowded schools.

学校の定員オーバーなどが ホワイトピアへと駆り立て

Many Whitopians feel pulled by merit,

一方 メリットや自由など 私有コミュニティーの魅力

freedom, the allure of privatism -- privatized places, privatized people,

つまり私有する土地で ごく限られた人々が 全てを私有する生活に

privatized things.

惹きつけられていきます

And I learned in Whitopia how a country can have racism

私は国に人種差別主義者がいなくても 人種差別が存在し得ると

without racists.

ホワイトピアで学びました

Many of my smug urban liberal friends

都会に住む気取ったリベラルな友人たちは

couldn't believe I would go on such a venture.

私の冒険を 信じられない様でした

The reality is that many white Americans are affable and kind.

実際のところ 多くの白人系アメリカ人は 愛想が良く親切です

Interpersonal race relations -- how we treat each other as human beings --

人種を超えた付き合いは― 人間としてあるべき接し方は

are vastly better than in my parents' generation.

私の両親の世代に比べて とても良くなっています

Can you imagine me going to Whitopia 40 years ago?

40年前なら私がホワイトピアに行くなんて 想像できませんよね？

What a journey that would have been.

(Laughter)

And yet, some things haven't changed.

しかし変わらないこともあります

America is as residentially and educationally segregated today

アメリカは今でも1970年頃と同じように 住む場所も教育においても

as it was in 1970.

人種によって分離されています

As Americans, we often find ways to cook for each other,

同じアメリカ人として 時々 一緒に料理したり

to dance with each other,

一緒に踊ったり

to host with each other,

招待し合っています

but why can't that translate into how we treat each other as communities?

しかし こういした行為を地域社会へと 広げていくことが なぜ出来ないのでしょう？

It's a devastating irony,

とんでもない皮肉です

how we have gone forward as individuals,

個人のレベルでは 進歩しながら

and backwards as communities.

地域社会においては 退化しているのですから

One of the Whitopian outlooks that really hit me

ホワイトピアの考えを示すこの言葉に

was a proverbial saying:

私はショックを受けました

"One black man is a delightful dinner guest;

「１人の黒人をディナーに招くのは 楽しくももあるが

50 black men is a ghetto."

50人の黒人といると ゲットーにいるようだ」

One of the big contexts animating my Whitopian journey was the year 2042.

私のホワイトピア旅行から 強く思い描いたのは

By 2042, white people will no longer be the American majority.

2042年までに白人は もはや アメリカの多数派でなくなるということです

As such, will there be more Whitopias?

そうなったら もっとホワイトピアが 建設されるのでしょうか？

In looking at this,

この問題を考えてみると

the danger of Whitopia is that the more segregation we have,

ホワイトピアに潜む危険は 人種の分離が進むにつれて

the less we can look at and confront conscious and unconscious bias.

意識的な また非意識的な偏見という問題が 直視されなくなるということです

I ventured on my two-year, 27,000 mile journey

２年間におよぶ４万キロの冒険で

to learn where, why, and how white people are fleeing,

白人がどこへ、なぜ そしてどの様にして 脱出を図っているかを学びました

but I didn't expect to have so much fun on my journey.

もっとも こんなに楽しい旅になるとは 思ってもみませんでしたが

(Laughter)

I didn't expect to learn so much about myself.

自分自身についても 予想外に多くを学びました

I don't expect I'll be living in a Whitopia --

だからといって 将来 ホワイトピアだとか

or a Blacktopia, for that matter.

ブラックトピアに住もうなんて 考えていません

I do plan to continue golfing every chance I get.

チャンスがある限り ゴルフは絶対に続けようと思いますけどね

(Laughter)

And I'll just have to leave the guns and megachurches back in Whitopia.
