and when I was 13, I convinced

toymakers, in the world, Hasbro,

to change the way that they marketed

one of their most best-selling products.

変えて欲しいって

So allow me to tell you about it.

今日は その話をするわ

So I have a brother, Gavin.

私にはギャヴィンという弟がいるの

When this whole shebang happened, he was four.

ことの始まりは 彼が4歳のとき

He loved to cook.

料理が大好きな弟は

He was always getting ingredients out of the fridge

いつも冷蔵庫にあるものを取り出しては

and mixing them into these, needless to say,

色々混ぜ合わせて料理してた

uneatable concoctions,

まあ当然食べられないんだけど

or making invisible macaroni and cheese.

マカロニチーズでも作っていたのかも

He wanted to be a chef really badly.

シェフになりたくて仕方ないみたいだった

And so what better gift for a kid who wanted to be a chef

そんな子供がもらって 一番嬉しいものといえば

than an Easy-Bake Oven. Right?

イージー・ベイク・オーブンしかないでしょ？

I mean, we all had those when we were little.

みんなにもそういうのがあったはず

And he wanted one so badly.

弟にとってはそのオーブンだったの

But then he started to realize something.

でもそれから あることに気付いた

In the commercials, and on the boxes for the Easy-Bake Ovens,

イージー・ベイク・オーブンのCMや パッケージを見ると

Hasbro marketed them specifically to girls.

ハズブロは明らかに女の子だけに売り込みをしてる

And the way that they did this

だってパッケージやCMには

was they would only feature girls on the boxes or in the commercials,

女の子しか出てこないし

and there would be flowery prints all over the ovens

オーブンも全体が花柄になっていて

and it would be in bright pink and purple,

色は鮮やかなピンクや紫

very gender-specific colors to females, right?

まさに女の子向けって感じでしょ？

So it kind of was sending a message

だから こんな風に言われてる気分になる

that only girls are supposed to cook; boys aren't.

「料理は女の子がするもので 男の子はしない」

And this discouraged my brother a lot.

弟はすごくがっかりしていたわ

He thought that he wasn't supposed to want to be a chef,

シェフになるなんて考えちゃだめだと感じたの

because that was something that girls did.

だって女の子がするものだから

Girls cooked; boys didn't,

女の子はするけど 男の子はしない

or so was the message that Hasbro was sending.

女の子はするけど 男の子はしない

And this got me thinking,

ハズブロからはそんなメッセージを感じた

God, I wish there was a way that I could change this,

そして私は考えたの

that could I have my voice heard by Hasbro

「ああ これを変える方法はないかしら

so I could ask them and tell them

ハズブロに声が届くなら

what they were doing wrong

間違ったことをしてるって教えて

and ask them to change it.

改善してってお願いするのに」

And that got me thinking about a website

そして あるウェブサイトを思い出したの

that I had learned about a few months prior

数か月前に知ったばかりの

called Change.org.

チェンジ・ドット・オーグのこと

Change.org is an online petition-sharing platform

オンラインの署名プラットフォームで

where you can create a petition and share it

嘆願書をつくれるの

across all of these social media networks,

そしてソーシャル・メディア・ネットワークを使って共有できる

through Facebook, through Twitter,

たとえばフェイスブックにツイッター

through YouTube, through Reddit, through Tumblr,

ユーチューブ レディット タンブラー

through whatever you can think of.

思いつく限りどれでも

And so I created a petition

だから嘆願書をつくったわ

along with the YouTube video that I added to the petition

そしてユーチューブを使って考えを広めたの

basically asking Hasbro

ハズブロに売り込み方を変えてほしいって

to change the way that they marketed it,

ＣＭやパッケージに男の子も起用して

in featuring boys in the commercials, on the boxes,

性別に偏りのない色の

and most of all creating them

製品を作ってほしいって

in less gender-specific colors.

そして この活動は軌道に乗り始めた

So this petition started to take off --

予想もできないくらい とてつもない速さで

humongously fast, you have no idea.

国内のいろんな報道機関からインタビューを受けたわ

I was getting interviewed by all these national news outlets

もうびっくり

and press outlets, and it was amazing.

3週間 いえ 3週間と半分くらいだったかしら

In three weeks, maybe three and a half,

４万６千もの署名が集まったの

I had 46,000 signatures on this petition.

信じられないわよね

So, needless to say, it was crazy.

そしてついに ハズブロが自ら 私を本社に招待してくれたの

Eventually, Hasbro themselves invited me to their headquarters

そして私に

so they could go and unveil

新しいイージー・ベイク・オーブンを見せてくれた

their new Easy-Bake Oven product to me

黒や シルバーや 青色の

in black, silver and blue.

間違いなく 人生で最高の瞬間だったわ

It was literally one of the best moments of my life.

まるで『チャーリーとチョコレート工場』の世界

It was like "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory."

本当に素晴らしい瞬間だった

That thing was amazing.

でもその時 私は気付いてなかったの

What I didn't realize at the time, however,

自分が活動家になったってことに

was that I had become an activist,

何かを変えることができた

I could change something,

子供なのに 子供である私の声が

that even as a kid, or maybe even especially as a kid,

大きな影響力を持った あなたの声だってそう

my voice mattered, and your voice matters too.

ただ そんな簡単にはいかないわ

I want to let you know it's not going to be easy,

私がそうだったから

and it wasn't easy for me,

困難もたくさんあった

because I faced a lot of obstacles.

インターネット上や 実生活でさえ

People online, and sometimes even in real life,

私や家族を蔑む人たちがいたの

were disrespectful to me and my family,

すべてが時間の無駄って言われた

and talked about how the whole thing was a waste of time,

すごく落ち込んだわ

and it really discouraged me.

実はいくつか紹介したいの だって一番の仕返しは

And actually, I have some examples, because what's better revenge

その愚かさを見世物にしてやることじゃない？

than displaying their idiocy?

So it was comments like these

変化を起こすことを 諦めそうになった

that really discouraged me from wanting to make change in the future

だって思ったの 「誰も気にしてないんだ

because I thought, people don't care,

ただ時間の無駄って思ってる

people think it's a waste of time,

みんなが私や家族を 軽蔑したような目で見るんだわ」って

and people are going to be disrespectful to me and my family.

胸が痛かった　そして考えたの

It hurt me, and it made me think,

「変化を起こす意味なんてあるの？」

what's the point of making change in the future?

でも だんだん こう思えてきた

But then I started to realize something.

言いたい奴には言わせとけ

Haters gonna hate.

さあみんな　一緒に！１ ２ ３

Come on, say it with me. One, two, three:

言いたい奴には言わせとけ！

Haters gonna hate.

そう 好きに言わせとけばいいのよ！

So let your haters hate,

あなたも変化を起こして

you know what, and make your change,

絶対にできるから

because I know you can.

こんなに大勢

I look out into this crowd,

400人ものひとがここに来たんだもの

and I see 400 people

どうしたら変化を起こせるのかを 知りたいという理由でね

who came out because they wanted to know how they could make a change,

あなたにもできるわ 家でこれを見ているあなたもそう

and I know that you can, and all of you watching at home can too

できることがたくさんあるし 信じているものだってたくさんあるでしょう

because you have so much that you can do and that you believe in,

そして意見を交換していくの

and you can trade it across all these social media,

思いつく限り何でも使って

through whatever else you can think of.

そうすれば変えられる

And you can make that change.

自分が信じるものを掲げて

You can take what you believe in

それをもとに 変化を起こすの

and turn it into a cause and change it.

今日 色々な話の中で出てきた「ひらめき」

And that spark that you've been hearing about all day today,

あなたの中にあるその「ひらめき」を使って

you can use that spark that you have within you

変化の火を灯そう

and turn it into a fire.
