>> Allison Crollard: The Field Research
and Consultation Group is a group of industrial hygienists
that does exposure assessments for businesses around the state.
So we go out and measure potential health hazards.
They could vary from chemical exposures.
To noise exposures.
Other ergonomic exposures
or other occupational health concerns.
Some of the benefits to working
with a field group is also being able to connect working
in the community with students, and learning
about occupational health, we're able to have students
or occupational medicine residents come along on visits
with us so that they get a chance
to see what these different worksites look like,
and get some hands-on experience
with the different occupational health concerns
that are out there.
>> Bob Gallagher: Pioneer Industries is a non-profit
manufacturing organization that works primarily with aerospace
and various industrial manufacturers as a third party.
And we also provide a chance for change
for individuals who've come through hard times.
Through drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
Or through the judicial system.
First, doing air monitoring, primarily due to the type
of material we're spraying on some parts.
We have primer that's got a large quantity
of hexavalent chromium in it.
It's a very durable primer that is required by some
of the aerospace people we work with.
But since it's got hexavalent chromium,
it can cause lung and kidney problems.
It also is a carcinogen, if they're exposed
to it at a higher level.
So we have a responsibility to make sure
that our employees are well below the exposure level.
>> Allison Crollard: In order to measure employee exposures,
we use a personal sampling pump.
And on the other end there's a filter
that will collect the hexavalent chromium in the air.
And the primer is neon green.
And it's green because of the hexavalent chromium.
That's a property of the chemical.
And so when we sample for that, often you can see
on the filter the green coloration from the pain.
Ultimately from the hexavalent chromium.
Accessing exposures at worksites is important to make sure
that workers aren't over-exposed to things
that may harm their health.
Either in the short-term or the long-term.
And we're able to provide these services to small businesses,
or businesses with under-served populations
as in the case of Pioneer.
And it's a way for us
to hopefully prevent health outcomes down the line.
>> Bob Gallagher: It's a high priority for us
to make sure our employees are working
in a safe, industrial manner.
Well I like to say I like to have them leave the building the
same way they came in.
