and some of you may be wondering

But some years ago I was on an elevator in Philadelphia,

and he said, "My, what an anticlimax!"

I hope

that you won't feel that these few moments with me

after all these tremendous

talks that you've heard,

and addresses, which I intend to listen to every one of them.

But I was

数年前のこと

on an airplane in the east some years ago,

and the man sitting across the aisle from me

was the mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina.

His name was John Belk. Some of you will probably know him.

And there was a drunk man on there,

and he got up out of his seat two or three times,

and he was making everybody upset

And the man said, "No, who?"

He said, "It's Billy Graham,

He said, "You don't say!"

And he turned to me, and he said, "Put her there!"

He said, "Your sermons have certainly helped me."

And I suppose that that's true

with thousands of people.

I know that as you have been peering into the future,

and as we've heard some of it here tonight,

I would like to live in that age

and see what is going to be.

But I won't,

because I'm 80 years old. This is my eightieth year,

But this is not the first time

that we've had a technological revolution.

We've had others.

And there's one that I want to talk about.

In one generation,

the nation of the people of Israel

had a tremendous and dramatic change

that made them a great power in the Near East.

A man by the name of David

came to the throne,

王座につき

and King David became one of the great leaders

ダビデ王はその世代屈指の

of his generation.

リーダーとなりました

He was a man of tremendous leadership.

彼は素晴らしい統率力を有する人物でした

He had the favor of God with him.

彼は神の恩恵を受けていました

He was a brilliant poet,

彼は才能あふれる詩人

philosopher, writer, soldier --

哲学者 物書き 兵士であり

with strategies in battle and conflict

彼が編み出した戦い・紛争における戦略は

that people study even today.

今日も研究の対象となっています

But about two centuries before David,

しかし ダビデより約2世紀前に生きた

the Hittites

ヒッタイト人は

had discovered the secret

鉄の製錬と加工という

of smelting and processing of iron,

技法を編み出し

and, slowly, that skill spread.

その技術は徐々に広まっていきました

But they wouldn't allow the Israelis

to look into it, or to have any.

その技術を検討したり 手にすることは許されませんでした

But David changed all of that,

and he introduced the Iron Age

to Israel.

And the Bible says that David laid up great stores of iron,

and which archaeologists have found,

that in present-day Palestine,

there are evidences of that generation.

Now, instead of crude tools

made of sticks and stones,

Israel now had iron plows,

and sickles, and hoes

and military weapons.

武器を手にしました

And in the course of one generation,

そしてたった一世代のうちに

Israel was completely changed.

The introduction of iron, in some ways,

鉄の導入は ある意味で

had an impact

マイクロチップが我々の世代に

a little bit like the microchip

与えたと類似の

has had on our generation.

And

David found

ダビデは技術が解決できない問題も

that there were many problems that technology could not solve.

There were many problems still left.

And they're still with us, and you haven't solved them,

and I haven't heard anybody here speak to that.

How do we solve these three problems

さて 私が取り上げたい次の三つの問題は

that I'd like to mention?

The first one that David saw

ダビデが取り上げた一つ目の問題は

was human evil.

人間の悪です

Where does it come from?

それはどこから来るのでしょう？

How do we solve it?

どのように解決できるでしょう？

Over again and again

英国の大政治家 グラッドストーンが

in the Psalms,

世界で最も素晴らしい本と呼ぶ聖書の詩篇で

which Gladstone said was the greatest book in the world,

ダビデは人間の悪について

David describes the evils of the human race.

何度も繰り返し語っています

And yet he says,

その一方で彼は

"He restores my soul."

「主は私の魂を生き返らせてくださる」と言っています

Have you ever thought about what a contradiction we are?

人間とはなんと矛盾に満ちた存在なのでしょう

On one hand, we can probe the deepest secrets of the universe

我々は 宇宙の奥深くにある秘密を探り

and dramatically push back the frontiers of technology,

技術の未開拓分野を劇的に押し広げています

as this conference vividly demonstrates.

この会議がその証拠です

We've seen under the sea,

我々は 海底3マイルを

three miles down,

探査し

or galaxies hundreds of billions of years

何兆年も先の銀河を

out in the future.

観測することができます

But on the other hand,

しかし そのかたわら

something is wrong.

何かが狂っているのです

Our battleships,

我々の戦艦

our soldiers,

我々の兵士たちは

are on a frontier now,

今 前線におかれ

almost ready to go to war

イラクとの戦争に

with Iraq.

備えています

Now, what causes this?

それは何に起因するのでしょう？

Why do we have these wars in every generation,

なぜ どの世代でも 世界のどの地域でも

and in every part of the world?

戦争が起こり

And revolutions?

革命が起こるのでしょう？

We can't get along with other people,

我々は友好を保つことができません

even in our own families.

家族内で揉めることさえあります

We find ourselves in the paralyzing grip

我々はこの自滅的な習慣に囚われ

of self-destructive habits we can't break.

麻痺した状態にあります

Racism and injustice and violence sweep our world,

この世界には人種差別と不正行為と暴力が蔓延り

bringing a tragic harvest of heartache and death.

心痛と死という悲劇的な結果をもたらしています

Even the most sophisticated among us

最高に洗練された人物さえもが

seem powerless to break this cycle.

I would like to see Oracle

take up that,

some other

technological geniuses work on this.
