my mom asked me what I would want my house to look like,

９歳のとき

and I drew this fairy mushroom.

母に「どんなお家がほしい」と聞かれ

And then she actually built it.

私は このキノコの家を描きました

(Laughter)

すると 母はその通りに 建ててくれました

I don't think I realized this was so unusual at the time,

（笑）

and maybe I still haven't,

当時 それが特別なこととは 思いもせず

because I'm still designing houses.

きっと今もそうでしょう

This is a six-story bespoke home on the island of Bali.

私は家の設計を ずっとしていますから

It's built almost entirely from bamboo.

こちらは 特注の６階建の家で バリ島にあります

The living room overlooks the valley from the fourth floor.

ほぼ全てが 竹でできています

You enter the house by a bridge.

４階のリビングからは 谷間が一望でき

It can get hot in the tropics,

橋を渡って 家に入ります

so we make big curving roofs to catch the breezes.

熱帯の暑さを しのぐため

But some rooms have tall windows to keep the air conditioning in

大きくカーブした屋根にし 風を取り入れています

and the bugs out.

背の高い窓を設け 自然の空調をきかせつつ

This room we left open.

虫が入らないようにした 部屋もあります

We made an air-conditioned, tented bed.

こちらは 開放的な部屋に

And one client wanted a TV room in the corner of her living room.

空気の流れる 天幕型の ベッドを用意しました

Boxing off an area with tall walls just didn't feel right,

リビングの角にテレビ部屋がほしい というクライアント

so instead, we made this giant woven pod.

高い壁で囲うのは しっくり来なかったので

Now, we do have all the necessary luxuries, like bathrooms.

このように 巨大な繭（まゆ）型の 部屋を作りました

This one is a basket in the corner of the living room,

必要な贅沢品もあります 例えば お手洗い

and I've got tell you, some people actually hesitate to use it.

こちらは リビングの隅にある かご型のお手洗いです

We have not quite figured out our acoustic insulation.

言っておきますと 使うのに抵抗があるかもしれません

(Laughter)

防音が まだ十分ではないんです

So there are lots of things that we're still working on,

（笑）

but one thing I have learned

is that bamboo will treat you well if you use it right.

一つ 私が学んだのは

It's actually a wild grass.

うまく使えば 竹はそれに応えてくれることです

It grows on otherwise unproductive land --

竹は 野生のイネ科の植物です

deep ravines, mountainsides.

深い峡谷や山腹など 耕作に向かない土地でも育ちます

It lives off of rainwater, spring water, sunlight,

and of the 1,450 species of bamboo that grow across the world,

we use just seven of them.

That's my dad.

私たちが使うのは そのうち７種類です

He's the one who got me building with bamboo,

こちらは父です

and he is standing in a clump of Dendrocalamus asper niger

父の影響で 私は竹の建築を始めました

that he planted just seven years ago.

父は 竹の群生のなかにいますが

Each year, it sends up a new generation of shoots.

７年前に植えた デンドロカラムスという巨大竹です

That shoot, we watched it grow a meter in three days just last week,

毎年 新しい芽を出します

so we're talking about sustainable timber in three years.

先週 その若竹が３日間で１メートル 成長したのを目の当たりにしたところです

Now, we harvest from hundreds of family-owned clumps.

竹は ３年で建築資材となる 持続可能性を備えた材料なのです

Betung, as we call it, it's really long,

私たちは 家族で保有する 数百の群生から竹を採っています

up to 18 meters of usable length.

「べトン」と呼ぶ こちらの竹はとても長く

Try getting that truck down the mountain.

最長18mの建築材となります

And it's strong: it has the tensile strength of steel,

トラックで竹を麓まで 運ぼうとしているところです

the compressive strength of concrete.

竹は とても強く 鉄のように しなり

Slam four tons straight down on a pole,and it can take it.

コンクリートのような 圧縮力があります

Because it's hollow, it's lightweight,

竹の棹（さお）は １本で４トンの重さに

light enough to be lifted by just a few men,

耐えられるほどです

or, apparently, one woman.

中が空洞で 非常に軽く

(Laughter) (Applause)

男性数人で持ち上げられるほどです

And when my father built Green School in Bali,

もちろん女性一人でも大丈夫

he chose bamboo for all of the buildings on campus,

because he saw it as a promise.

It's a promise to the kids.

キャンパス内の建物は すべて竹で作りました

It's one sustainable material that they will not run out of.

父なりの「約束」だったのです

And when I first saw these structures under construction about six years ago,

子どもたちへの「約束」です

I just thought, this makes perfect sense.

持続可能な材料で なくなることのない 竹に思いをこめたのです

It is growing all around us.

６年前に建築中の建物を 初めて見たとき

It's strong. It's elegant. It's earthquake-resistant.

まさに理にかなったものだ と思いました

Why hasn't this happened sooner, and what can we do with it next?

竹はそこら中に生えています

So along with some of the original builders of Green School,

強くてエレガントでもあります

I founded Ibuku.

地震にも耐性があります

Ibu means "mother," and ku means "mine," so it represents my Mother Earth,

なぜもっと早くしなかったのか― 次は何ができるだろうと考え

and at Ibuku, we are a team of artisans, architects and designers,

グリーン・スクール建設に 初期から関わったメンバー数名と

and what we're doing together is creating a new way of building.

「IBUKU（イブク）」を設立しました

Over the past five years together,

IBUは「母」 KUは「私の」という意味で 「母なる大地」を表わしています

we have built over 50 unique structures, most of them in Bali.

and we fill them with bespoke furniture,

It looks a lot like a kitchen, right?

And a bridge that spans 22 meters across a river.

Now, what we're doing, it's not entirely new.

オープンエアのキッチンがある レストランです

From little huts to elaborate bridges like this one in Java,

まさにキッチンという感じでしょう

bamboo has been in use across the tropical regions of the world for literally tens of thousands of years.

こちらの川にかかった橋は 22mの長さがあります

There are islands and even continents that were first reached by bamboo rafts.

私たちの取組みは そんなに新しいことではありません

But until recently,

小屋から 複雑な橋― このジャワ島の橋のようなものまで

it was almost impossible to reliably protect bamboo from insects,

竹は 世界中の熱帯で ずっと使われてきました

and so, just about everything that was ever built out of bamboo is gone.

文字どおり 何万年もの間です

Unprotected bamboo weathers.

竹のいかだで初めて漂着した島や 大陸まであります

Untreated bamboo gets eaten to dust.

And so that's why most people, especially in Asia, think that

you couldn't be poor enough or rural enough to actually want to live in a bamboo house.

竹で作られたものは全て ダメになってしまいました

And so we thought,

what will it take to change their minds, to convince people that

that bamboo is worth building with, much less worth aspiring to?

First, we needed safe treatment solutions.

It turns bamboo into a viable building material.

Treat it properly, design it carefully,

and a bamboo structure can last a lifetime.

Second, build something extraordinary out of it. Inspire people.

竹が建築に適している と納得させるかです

Fortunately, Balinese culture fosters craftsmanship. It values the artisan.

まず 必要だったのは 安全な処理方法です

So combine those with the adventurous outliers

ホウ砂は自然の塩で

from new generations of locally trained architects and designers and engineers,

竹に 建築材料としての 耐久性を与えてくれます

and always remember that you are designing

正しく扱い 注意深く設計をすることで

for curving, tapering, hollow poles.

竹の建築は 一生ものになります

No two poles alike, no straight lines, no two-by-fours here.

つぎに 傑出したものを 作り出すこと

The tried-and-true, well-crafted formulas and vocabulary of architecture do not apply here.

人々の心を動かすのです

We have had to invent our own rules.

幸いにも

We ask the bamboo what it's good at, what it wants to become,

バリでは職人技術を 育む文化があり

and what it says is: respect it, design for its strengths,

職人が尊重されています

protect it from water, and to make the most of its curves.

これらに加えるのが 冒険的なスパイス

So we design in real 3D,

地元で生まれた 新進気鋭の建築家

making scale structural models

out of the same material that we'll later use to build the house.

設計のとき 常に肝に銘じておくべきは

And bamboo model-making, it's an art,

曲がり 先細で空洞の筒を 扱うということです

as well as some hardcore engineering.

竹は どれ一つとして同じものはなく 直線もありません

So that's the blueprint of the house.

ツーバイフォーの木材 ではないのです

(Laughter)

建築界で実証された 精巧な方式や用語などは

And we bring it to site,

ここでは通用しません

and with tiny rulers, we measure each pole,

自らルールも作り出さないと いけませんでした

and consider each curve, and we choose a piece of bamboo from the pile

何が得意で どうなりたいのか 竹の声に耳を傾け

to replicate that house on site.

導かれた答えが 竹を尊重し その強みに合わせて設計し

When it comes down to the details, we consider everything.

水から守り 曲線を生かす ということでした

Why are doors so often rectangular?

リアル３Ｄで設計し

Why not round?

構造模型を作るのにも

How could you make a door better?

実際の建築で使う素材を 使います

Well, its hinges battle with gravity,

竹の設計模型は それ自体が芸術で

and gravity will always win in the end,

本格的なエンジニアリングでもあります

so why not have it pivot on the center where it can stay balanced?

これが家の青写真です

And while you're at it, why not doors shaped like teardrops?

（笑）

To reap the selective benefits and work within the constraints of this material,

これを現場に持ち込み

we have really had to push ourselves,

小さな巻尺で竹の棹を 一本一本 計測し

and within that constraint, we have found space for something new.

It's a challenge, how do you make a ceiling if you don't have any flat boards to work with?

模型を再現するのに ふさわしい竹を選び出しました

Let me tell you, sometimes I dream of sheet rock and plywood.

細部に至っては あらゆることを考慮します

(Laughter)

なぜドアは 長方形が多いのか

But if what you've got is skilled craftsmen

なぜ丸ではないのか

and itsy bitsy little splits,

どうすれば ドアを良くできるか

weave that ceiling together,

蝶番（ちょうつがい）と重力とでは

stretch a canvas over it, lacquer it.

重力が勝つに 決まっていますから

How do you design durable kitchen countertops

最初から バランスが取れるよう

that do justice to this curving structure you've just built?

中央に回転軸を 置いたらどうか

Slice up a boulder like a loaf of bread,

それなら ドアを 涙型にしたらどうか

hand-carve each to fit the other,

この素材にある 制約のなかで

leave the crusts on,

選り抜きの恩恵を 享受すべく

and what we're doing, it is almost entirely handmade.

私たちは自らを 限界まで押しやり

The structural connections of our buildings are reinforced by steel joints,

その制約のなかで 新しい工夫の余地を見つけました

but we use a lot of hand-whittled bamboo pins.

まさにチャレンジです まっすぐな板もないのに

There are thousands of pins in each floor.

どうやって 天井を作るというんでしょう

This floor is made of glossy and durable bamboo skin.

正直なところ 時には 石膏ボードや合板がほしいと思います

You can feel the texture under bare feet.

（笑）

And the floor that you walk on, can it affect the way that you walk?

でも もし熟練した職人と

Can it change the footprint that you'll ultimately leave on the world?

ちょっと割竹があれば

I remember being nine years old

一緒に天井を編んで

and feeling wonder, and possibility,

そこにキャンバスを広げて 漆を塗れます

and a little bit of idealism.

こんな風に 曲線でできた建物に合い

And we've got a really long way to go,

頑丈なキッチン・カウンターを どう設計しますか

there's a lot left to learn,

食パンみたいに 岩をスライスし

but one thing I know is that with creativity and commitment,

ピッタリ合うよう 手で削り

you can create beauty and comfort

固くなった表面は そのまま残しておきます

and safety and even luxury

つまり ほぼ全てが 手作りなんです

out of a material that will grow back.

私たちの建物の構造は
