You scared me, and I'm a fan of yours,

and you know I love you, and you still scared me.

僕が君を敬愛しているのを知っているはずなのに、ドッキリをしかけた。

- Yeah.

そうね。

- And you just did it, and you just--

とにかく、ドッキリされたんだよ、君は...

You're not mean-spirited. - No.

- You're just cr-- a little cruel.

その、冷酷だよ。

- Yeah. - And, yeah.

I came in--

部屋に...

- It's not cruel. It's just sneaky.

冷酷じゃないわ、それは。卑劣なだけよ。

- [laughing] It's sneaky.

卑劣か。

But I kind of felt something was gonna happen,

何か、来るとは感じていたんだ。

and I came in, and the producer said to me,

部屋に入って、プロデューサーが

"Go on into the-- this is your dressing room.

「その、入ってくれと…ここがドレッシングルーム。

"Go into the bathroom.

ちょっと、バスルームに入って。

Ellen has an old picture of you and her from years ago."

エレンがそこに昔の彼女の写真を掛けているから」と

And I go, "Ugh, it's probably an awful picture."

それで、「うぇっ、ひどい写真だろうな」と僕が言ったら、

He goes, "It's pretty funny. You'll laugh at it.

彼は続けて、「面白いと思う。きっと笑うはずだ。

She hung it in the bathroom."

彼女がバスルームにつるされてるよ」ってね。

And I go, "Okay," and I go to the bathroom.

それで、僕は「わかった」と言って、バスルームに入ったんだ。

The door is creaked a little bit closed.

ドアが軋んでいて、少し開いていたんだ。

- Well, all right, let's show--

そうそう、それではご覧ください。

this is me trying to scare him.

私が彼をビックリさせようとした様子を。

- This was minutes ago.

今さっきの出来事だよ。

I'm walking in, and I go. What the heck?

入るよ。行くよ。もうどうにでもなれ。

That's the bathroom. I'm about to go in there.

[men speaking indistinctly]

You sure? - Yep.

- I knew it.

Oh, God, something's gonna jump out and scare me.

まったく、何かが飛び出して、ビックリさせるつもりだろ。

Yeah, I knew it. [laughter]

分かってたんだって（笑）

I'll just do it.

I don't like getting scared.

How did you know it?

なんで、わかったの？

- I did get scared too, 'cause you go, "Whoo-ha-ha."

僕も怖かったんだよ、君が「ワォ」ってきたから。

- Yeah, but then-- [both laugh]

そうで、でも、（笑）

But then I was thinking, "Oh, I wish I wasn't there,

でも、私は、「ここにいるのは間違ったな」と思ったのよ。

'cause then you would've just done that all by yourself.

だって、あなたが全部、一人でやっちゃうもんだと思っていたから。

[laughter] That would've been--

（笑）ホントに…

- That would've been really embarrassing.

それは、ホントに恥ずかしいね。

- That would've been better. - Yeah.

一人でやってもらった方が良かった　-そうだね。

I'm always getting embarrassed. Yeah.

僕はいつもこうなんだよ。　そうね。

But I'm so happy to be here.

でも、ここに来られてうれしいよ。

I never get a chance to see you because...

- I know. - I'm in New York, but now--

そうね　-僕はニューヨークだし、でも今は…

- I watch you all the time. [cheers and applause]

it's just now "The Tonight Show."

- Right, it's just a change of title.

But they're big shoes to fill with Jay Leno,

だけど、ジェイ・レノの後釜なわけだから、

and so the first night especially, I was nervous,

特に初日は、緊張したもんだよ。

because I go, "Do I just come out

and just do jokes like I've been on

ただ、ジョークを言えばいいのかなと、何年間か

'The Tonight Show' for years",

or "do I come out and go, 'Hey, guys.

This is what a talk show is.'"

この番組こそがトークショーだよ』ってやればいいのか」と思ったりしたからね。

Because there might be some kids watching

だって、初めて、トークショーを見る子どもも

that've never seen a talk show but, since I'm new,

いるかもしれないわけだから。新しく司会をやるからには、

they'll give it a shot and-- 'cause when I was a kid,

とりあえずやってみようということで。　なぜなら、子供の頃は

I would ask my parents for permission.

トゥナイト・ショーを見るのに両親に許可を取ってた。

"Can I stay up, watch Johnny Carson?"

「夜、ジョニー・カーソン見ても良い？」ってね

It was a big deal, you know,

それが影響していると思うよ。

just to stay up to watch the monologue.

見ていられたのはモノローグまでだったからね。

So I thought, "I'll come out,

だから、「出たらまずは、

I'll explain what a talk show is,

トークショーとは何かを説明をして、

then I'll go, you know, 'This is my sidekick,'

それから、『これが他の出演者です』と言い、

and then I'll leave and come back out and tell jokes."

戻って、ジョークを言えばいい」と思ったんだ。

So I called Jay Leno.

そこで、ジェイ・レノに電話して、

I go, "What do you think of that idea?"

「そのアイデア、どうおもいます？」って聞いたんだ。

He goes...

彼は

[as Jay Leno] "I'd just come out and tell jokes."

（ジェイ・レノの真似）「私は出てはジョークを言っていただけだよ」て言ってた。

And I go, "That's what I was thinking, but"--

それで、「それは考えていたのですが、...」

I go, "Now I'm confused."

続けて、「今は迷っています」と言ったんだ。

And so I talked to my head writer,

それから、ライターと話して

and he goes-- he goes--

彼は...

I go "Jay says 'just to come out

僕は「ジェイが『出ては

and tell jokes like I've been doing it.'."

私がしてきたようにジョークをかませばいい』と言っていた」と彼に言ったら。

And he goes, "Yeah, but he's Jay Leno,

彼は、「そうかもね、でも、彼はジェイ・レノで、

and you're--you're your thing.

君は君だよ。

It's a different flavor. It's a different thing.

Go out and do what you feel like you should do."

カメラの前に出たら、君がすべきだと思ったことをすればいい」と言っていくれたんだ。

And so I did that, and I--

I did that, and that went great,

and I explained what a talk show was

僕はトークショーというのは

and that a human comes out and tells jokes about the news.

人が出てきて、時事問題についてジョークをかます番組だと説明したんだ。

I mean, so kids who have never seen it,

その、トークショーが初めての子供たちのためにね、

now they know what it is.

それで、子供たちもトークショーがなんだかわかっている。

And then I came out, and I'm start--

それで、出て、始めるというか・・・

I came out, did some jokes,

出たら、ジョークをかましたんだよ。

and I made a joke about high school or something.

高校時代の事についてね。

And of course my mom and dad are in the audience

それと、もちろん僕の両親も観客席にいた。

'cause it was my first "Tonight Show."

だって、初めて「トゥナイト・ショー」なわけだからね。

And my dad heckles me.

それで、親父にはやられたね。

- I saw that. [laughter]

みてたわ（笑）

- Do you believe-- can you believe that?

信じられるかい？

- No. No, did he-- - Can you believe my life?

いや、そのね - 意味がわからなかったよ。

- Why? - That was--

-なんでよ？　-それはｰｰ

I couldn't believe it was happening.

とにかく、何が起きたか信じられなかった。

I go, "What is going on?"

僕は「どういうことだよ！」って感じだったよ。

Like, your son--

その…

this is probably the most nerve-racking

たぶん、かなり、ハラハラさせられたからね。

he's ever going to be, and you heckle?

父さんがそうしたんだ。 君にはそうするかい？

I go-- here's what happened.

いまから、その出来事を説明するよ。

I said--made some joke about, "Hey, Dad."

僕は「やあ父さん」

Or, you know, "I didn't"--

というか「母さん、

Or, "Mom and Dad, I didn't graduate high school"--

父さん、僕は高校は卒業してないんだ」とジョークをかましたんだよ。

which I did, but it was a joke.

ホントはしてるけど、ジョークとしてね。

I go, "I didn't graduate high school, but here I am.

「高校は卒業してないけど、ここにいる。

I'm host of 'The Tonight Show.'"

トゥナイト・ショーのMCをしている」といったんだ。

And everyone was laughing.

みんな、笑ってたよ。

They clapped. It was a funny joke.

拍手も起きた。それは面白かったんだよ。

And my dad goes, "We paid a lot of money for that school."

そしたら、父さんが「学費、結構な額を払ったんだぞ」って言ったんだ。

[laughter]

（笑）

Got a giant laugh. Bigger laugh than my laugh.

爆笑が起きてた。僕の時以上に。

- Yeah. - People were clapping.

そうね -みんな拍手してたよ。

I'm like, "Did that just happen?

僕は「夢か？」と思った。

"Did I just-- I just heard my dad's voice

「今のは父さんが

yelling at me."

僕に向かってのなにか叫んでたのか」って感じだったよ。

And the other thing is, I went to public school.

それに、僕は公立校に行ったから、

He didn't pay a lot of money.

そんなに、お金はかかってないけどね。

I'm like, "Are you talking about taxes?"

「税金のことか？」って感じだったよ。

I don't really get into math with my dad.

父をお金のことで困らせたことはないしね。

What are you talking about?

何言ってるんだよ！ってね。

- He was just making up stuff for a joke.

ｰお父さんは、ジョークを準備してたのよ。

- Butt out! Yes. Get your own show.

ｰお節介だわ！自分の番組持てばいいだろ。

Yeah. - Oh, my God.

だろ。 -まぁ。

- [chuckles] I love 'em.

（笑） 二人とも愛してる。

I love 'em. They're great people.

愛してるよ。素晴らしい二人だ。

- Well, they've got to be so proud of you.

そうね、彼らも、あなたの事を誇りに思っているはずね。

- They really are.

実際、そうだよ。

My mom calls me all the time--

母さんから電話来ると、いつも…

and most of the time she calls, it's to say

というか、ほとんど、電話が来るときは、

who was great on your show.

番組で、誰が良かった？って聞くんだ。

She always goes, "Oh, Ellen was great the other day.

すると、母さんは「この前のエレンの部屋が良かったわね

She had Bradley Cooper on."

I'm like, "Oh, yeah, well,

僕は「あぁ、そうだね、

"we've had Bradley Cooper on too.

僕の番組にも彼は出たよ

We've had some fun things."

面白かったよ」

She goes, "I know, but--

そしたら、母さんが「知ってるわ。でも・・・

so here's what Ellen did with Bradley."

エレンの部屋ではね...」って

I go, "I don't want to hear about Ellen's show!

僕は「別にエレンの部屋の事が聞きたいんじゃない!

I know that show's a great show."

エレンの部屋が素晴らしい番組ってことはわかってるよ」

- That's hilarious. - She loves you.
