We made this kindergarten to be a circle.

こちらは私たちが 2007年に設計した幼稚園です

It's a kind of endless circulation on top of the roof.

円形になるように幼稚園を作りました

If you are a parent,

屋根の上を 行き止まりのない形にしたのです

you know that kids love to keep making circles.

皆さんが親御さんなら

This is how the rooftop looks.

子供たちが ぐるぐると回りたがることは お分かりになりますよね

And why did we design this?

屋上はこんな風になっています

The principal of this kindergarten said,

どうしてこんなデザインにしたのかって？

"No, I don't want a handrail."

園長先生はこんなことを言いました

I said, "It's impossible."

「手すりなんか やめましょう」

But he insisted: "How about having a net sticking out from the edge of the roof?

私は言いました「それは無理ですよ」

So that it can catch the children falling off?"

それでも彼は言い張ります 「軒先から網を突き出して

(Laughter)

落ちてくる子供たちを 受け止めるっていうのは？」

I said, "It's impossible."

(笑)

And of course, the government official said,

「それは無理ですよ」

"Of course you have to have a handrail."

もちろん 国の役人はこう言いました

But we could keep that idea around the trees.

「当然 手すりは設置して頂かなければ なりません」

There are three trees popping through.

でも 木の周りだけ そのアイデアを残せました

And we were allowed to call this rope as a handrail.

屋根を突き抜けて立つ ３本の木があるのです

But of course, rope has nothing to do with them.

このロープを 手すり代わりとすることが許されました

They fall into the net.

子供たちにとって この手すりは全然関係ないのですね

And you get more,

わざとネットに落っこちるのです

and more,

何人か落ちると

more.

もっと

(Laughter)

もっと落ちていきます

Sometimes 40 children are around a tree.

(笑)

The boy on the branch,

一本の木の周りに40人もの子供が いることもあります

he loves the tree so he is eating the tree.

枝には男の子がいますね

(Laughter)

彼は木が大好きで 木を食べています

And at the time of an event,

(笑)

they sit on the edge.

何かイベントがある時は

It looks so nice from underneath.

みんな手すりの周りに座ります

Monkeys in the zoo.

下から見ると面白いですよ

(Laughter)

まるで動物園のお猿さんです

Feeding time.

(笑)

(Laughter) (Applause)

餌の時間ですね

And we made the roof as low as possible,

(笑)(拍手)

because we wanted to see children on top of the roof,

私たちは屋根をなるべく低く設置しました

not only underneath the roof.

下にいる子供たちだけではなく 屋上にいる子供たちも

And if the roof is too high, you see only the ceiling.

見えるようにしたかったからです

And the leg washing place -- there are many kinds of water taps.

屋根が高すぎると 天井しか見えませんからね

You see with the flexible tubes,

これは足洗い場 ― いろんな水栓があります

you want to spray water to your friends,

ホースがありますね

and the shower,

友達に水をかけてみたり

and the one in front is quite normal.

水浴びをしたくなりますよね

But if you look at this,

前にいる子はまともに見えますが

the boy is not washing his boots,

良く見てみると

he's putting water into his boots.

この子は長靴を洗っているのではなく

(Laughter)

靴の中に水を入れていますよ

This kindergarten is completely open, most of the year.

(笑)

And there is no boundary between inside and outside.

この幼稚園はほぼ一年中 完全に開けっ放しになっていて

So it means basically this architecture is a roof.

内と外の境目がありません

And also there is no boundary between classrooms.

つまりこの建築の基本的な部分は 屋根にあるのです

So there is no acoustic barrier at all.

教室と教室の間の境目もありません

When you put many children in a quiet box,

だから音を遮るものが全く無いのです

some of them get really nervous.

沢山の子供たちを静かな 箱のような場所に閉じ込めると

But in this kindergarten,

落ち着きがなくなる子もいますからね

there is no reason they get nervous.

でもこの幼稚園では

Because there is no boundary.

ナーバスになる理由なんかありません

And the principal says

だって境界が無いのですから

if the boy in the corner doesn't want to stay in the room,

園長先生が言います

we let him go.

隅にいるあの男の子が 部屋にじっとしていられないときは

He will come back eventually, because it's a circle, it comes back.

好きにさせます

(Laughter)

すると結局戻って来ちゃうんですね なにしろ円形ですから

But the point is, in that kind of occasion,

(笑)

usually children try to hide somewhere.

要はこういう状況では

But here, just they leave and come back.

子供はどこかに 隠れたがるものですが

It's a natural process.

ここでは ただ放っておけば 戻ってくるということです

And secondly, we consider noise very important.

自然なプロセスですね

You know that children sleep better in noise.

２つ目に 雑音が入ってくることが とても大切だということです

They don't sleep in a quiet space.

子供たちは ざわざわしていると 良く寝れますよね

And in this kindergarten,

静かな場所では寝ないんです

these children show amazing concentration in class.

それに この幼稚園では

And you know, our kind grew up in the jungle with noise.

子供たちは授業で すばらしく集中できるんです

They need noise.

我々の祖先はざわざわとする ジャングルで育ってきましたよね

And you know, you can talk to your friends in a noisy bar.

そう 雑音が必要なんです

You are not supposed to be in silence.

騒がしいバーでも 友人に話しかけますよね

And you know, these days

静けさの中にいることが 前提になっていないんです

we are trying to make everything under control.

近頃では

You know, it's completely open.

何でもかんでも 管理下に置こうとしますが

And you should know that

ここは完全に自由です

we can go skiing in -20 degrees in winter.

考えてもみてください

In summer you go swimming.

我々は冬にマイナス20度の中 スキーに行くことができます

The sand is 50 degrees.

砂の温度が50度にもなっている夏に

And also, you should know that you are waterproof.

泳ぎにも行きます

You never melt in rain.

それに 人間は防水性です

So, children are supposed to be outside.

雨の中でも溶けたりしません

So that is how we should treat them.

子供たちは 外にいるべきなんです

This is how they divide classrooms.

だから そのように彼らを 扱わなければなりません

They are supposed to help teachers.

教室はこんな風に分けられています

They don't.

先生たちのお手伝いを することになっていますが

(Laughter)

手伝ったりしません

I didn't put him in.

(笑)

A classroom.

私が押込めたんではないですよ

And a washbasin.

教室です

They talk to each other around the well.

手洗い場です

And there are always some trees in the classroom.

皆で井戸端会議していますね

A monkey trying to fish another monkey from above.

教室には 必ず木があります

(Laughter)

上にいるお猿さんが 別のお猿さんを 釣り上げようとしています

Monkeys.

(笑)

(Laughter)

お猿さんたちです

And each classroom has at least one skylight.

(笑)

And this is where Santa Claus comes down at the time of Christmas.

どの教室にも少なくとも１つは 天窓があります

This is the annex building,

クリスマスになると ここから サンタクロースが降りてきます

right next to that oval-shaped kindergarten.

これは別の建物で

The building is only five meters tall with seven floors.

楕円形の幼稚園のすぐ横にあります

And of course, the ceiling height is very low.

この建造物ではわずか５メートルの高さに ７つのフロアがあります

So you have to consider safety.

もちろん 天井はとても低くなっています

So, we put our children, a daughter and a son.

だから安全性を考慮しなければなりません

They tried to go in.

そこで自分たちの娘や息子に

He hit his head.

入ってもらいました

He's okay. His skull is quite strong.

彼は頭をぶつけました

He is resilient. It's my son.

でも大丈夫 彼の頭はとても丈夫にできています

(Laughter)

立ち直りが早いんです 僕の息子ですから

And he is trying to see if it is safe to jump off.

(笑)

And then we put other children.

飛び降りても大丈夫か のぞいています

The traffic jam is awful in Tokyo, as you know.

それから他の子供たちにも入ってもらいました

(Laughter)

東京では交通渋滞は ひどいもんです

The driver in front, she needs to learn how to drive.

(笑)

Now these days,

前の運転手 この女の子は 運転の仕方を覚える必要があるようです

kids need a small dosage of danger.

この頃では

And in this kind of occasion,

子供たちはちょっとした 危険を経験しなければなりません

they learn to help each other.

こういった場所では

This is society. This is the kind of opportunity we are losing these days.

互いに助け合うことを学びます

Now, this drawing is showing the movement of a boy

それが共同社会 そんな機会が今日では失われています

between 9:10 and 9:30.

この図はある男の子の

And the circumference of this building is 183 meters.

9:10から9:30までの動きを示したものです

So it's not exactly small at all.

この建物の周囲の長さは183mあるので

And this boy did 6,000 meters in the morning.

決して小さくありません

But the surprise is yet to come.

この子は朝に ６千m走ったことになります

The children in this kindergarten do 4,000 meters on average.

まだ驚くべきことがあります

And these children have the highest athletic abilities

この幼稚園での平均は４千mで

among many kindergartens.

この幼稚園の子供たちは 数ある幼稚園の中でも

The principal says,

もっとも運動能力があるということです

"I don't train them. We leave them on top of the roof.

園長先生は言います

Just like sheep."

「別に訓練している訳じゃあないですよ 屋上で好きにさせているだけです

(Laughter)

まるで羊のようにね」

They keep running.

(笑)

(Laughter)

彼らは走り続けます

My point is don't control them,

(笑)

don't protect them too much,

大切なのは 子供たちを管理しないこと

and they need to tumble sometimes.

過保護にしないこと

They need to get some injury.

そして 時には転ぶことだって 必要だということです

And that makes them learn

怪我することも時には必要です

how to live in this world.

そこから世の中で生きていく

I think architecture is capable of changing this world,

術を学んでいくのです

and people's lives.

私は 建築にはこの世と人々の生活を

And this is one of the attempts to change the lives of children.

変える力があると思っています
