and I'll explain how these identities come together.

It started four years ago,

なぜ この３つの立場が １つになったのかお話ししましょう

when a friend and I opened our first Ramadan fast

事の始まりは４年前

at one of the busiest mosques in New York City.

私と友人がラマダン初日の断食明けを

Crowds of men with beards and skullcaps were swarming the streets.

ニューヨークの賑やかなモスクで 迎えた時のことです

It was an FBI agent's wet dream. (Laughter)

通りはひげを蓄え スカルキャップを かぶった男たちであふれていました

But being a part of this community, we knew how welcoming this space was.

FBIの捜査官なら興奮ものです （笑）

For years, I'd seen photos of this space being documented

でも地域の一員だった私たちには 居心地のいい場所でした

as a lifeless and cold monolith,

長い間 私はこの場所を 活気のない冷淡な石碑のように写した

much like the stereotypical image painted of the American Muslim experience.

写真ばかり見てきました

Frustrated by this myopic view,

my friend and I had this crazy idea:

そんな浅い見方に嫌気がさして

Let's break our fast at a different mosque in a different state

私たちはとてつもない事を 思いついたんです

each night of Ramadan

and share those stories on a blog.

断食明けを迎え

We called it "30 Mosques in 30 Days,"

その話をブログで シェアするというものです

and we drove to all the 50 states

これを『30日間30モスク』と名付けて

and shared stories from over 100 vastly different Muslim communities,

全50州を車で回り

ranging from the Cambodian refugees in the L.A. projects

100か所を超える 実に様々な ムスリム社会の話を公開しました

to the black Sufis living in the woods of South Carolina.

L.A.の公営団地に住む カンボジア難民の話もあれば

What emerged was a beautiful and complicated portrait of America.

サウスカロライナ州の森に住む 黒人スーフィーの話もありました

The media coverage forced local journalists

そこに表れたのは 複雑で美しいアメリカの姿でした

to revisit their Muslim communities,

メディア報道のおかげで 地元の記者が

but what was really exciting was seeing people from around the world

being inspired to take their own 30-mosque journey.

There were even these two NFL athletes

who took a sabbatical from the league to do so.

And as 30 Mosques was blossoming around the world,

２人のNFLの選手までいました

I was actually stuck in Pakistan working on a film.

世界中に30モスクの旅が 広まりつつあった頃

My codirector, Omar, and I were at a breaking point with many of our friends

私は映画制作の為 パキスタンで身動きが取れずにいました

on how to position the film.

共同監督のオマールと私は 映画に対する見解の相違から 多くの友人と

The movie is called "These Birds Walk,"

一触即発の状態にありました

and it is about wayward street kids

映画のタイトルは “These Birds Walk”

who are struggling to find some semblance of family.

一筋縄ではいかない ストリートチルドレンが

We focus on the complexities of youth and family discord,

家族らしさを求めて 悪戦苦闘する話です

but our friends kept on nudging us to comment on drones and target killings

私たちは若者の複雑さや 家族の不和に焦点を当てましたが

to make the film "more relevant,"

友人たちは この映画で 無人攻撃機や標的殺害を扱って

essentially reducing these people who have entrusted us with their stories

もっと「今日的な意味」を 持たせるべきだと迫ったのです

into sociopolitical symbols.

でもそうすると私たちに 物語を託してくれた人々が

Of course, we didn't listen to them,

単なる社会政治的な シンボルになってしまいます

and instead, we championed the tender gestures of love

当然そんな意見は無視して

and headlong flashes of youth.

豊かな愛情表現と 向こう見ずな若さの輝きを

The agenda behind our cinematic immersion was only empathy,

前面に押し出しました

an emotion that's largely deficient from films

この映画の背後に隠れた 私たちの課題は「共感」でした

that come from our region of the world.

And as "These Birds Walk" played at film festivals and theaters internationally,

ひどく欠けている感情です

I finally had my feet planted at home in New York,

“These Birds Walk”が世界中の 映画祭や劇場で公開されて

and with all the extra time and still no real money,

my wife tasked me to cook more for us.

And whenever I'd go to the local butcher to purchase some halal meat,

something felt off.

For those that don't know, halal is a term used for meat

that is raised and slaughtered humanely following very strict Islamic guidelines.

Unfortunately, the majority of halal meat in America

人道的に育てられ 処理された肉を指す言葉です

doesn't rise to the standard that my faith calls for.

残念なことに アメリカの ハラール肉の大半は

The more I learned about these unethical practices,

イスラムの教えが要求する基準を 満たしていません

the more violated I felt,

この倫理に反したやり方を知るたびに

particularly because businesses from my own community

自分が穢されていくような気がしました

were the ones taking advantage of my orthodoxy.

So, with emotions running high, and absolutely no experience in butchery,

some friends and I opened a meat store

in the heart of the East Village fashion district.

We call it Honest Chops,

and we're reclaiming halal by sourcing organic, humanely raised animals,

店の名前は“Honest Chops” （正直肉店）です

and by making it accessible and affordable to working-class families.

There's really nothing like it in America.

The unbelievable part is actually that 90 percent of our in-store customers

are not even Muslim.

For many, it is their first time interacting with Islam

on such an intimate level.

So all these disparate projects -- (Laughter) --

are the result of a restlessness.

They are a visceral response to the businesses and curators

who work hard to oversimplify my beliefs and my community,

どれも私の信仰とコミュニティを 単純化しようと躍起になっている ―

and the only way to beat their machine is to play by different rules.

企業やキュレーターに対する 本能的な反応です

We must fight with an inventive approach.

彼らの体制に打ち勝つ唯一の方法は 自分なりのルールに従うことです

With the trust, with the access, with the love that only we can bring,

発想豊かなアプローチで 争う必要があるのです

we must unapologetically reclaim our beliefs

私たちだけが手に入れられる 信頼や関係や愛情を通して

in every moving image, in every cut of meat,

堂々と すべての映像とすべての肉に

because if we whitewash our stories for the sake of mass appeal,

私たちの信仰を取り戻す必要があります

not only will we fail,

なぜなら大衆に迎合して 話を取り繕ったとしても

but we will be trumped by those with more money and more resources

失敗するばかりでなく

to tell our stories.

お金や資産をつぎ込んで 私たちの話をでっち上げる連中に

But the call for creative courage is not for novelty or relevance.

出し抜かれるだけだからです

It is simply because our communities are so damn unique and so damn beautiful.

ただし創造性豊かな勇気が必要なのは 目新しさや今日的な意味のためではありません

They demand us to find uncompromising ways to be acknowledged and respected.
