Why am I watching myself?
I love that I haven't seen it yet.
What is she even eating? I don't even know what it is.
Looks like a lot of food for her.
Where are you taking me on this ride, girl?
Ew. The sound of eating.
(speaking Japanese)
What's gonna happen?
(sarcastically) Wow, this is really interesting.
(in video: slurping and humming)
Ew, I can't handle the slurping.
(speaking Japanese)
(speaking Japanese)
(laughing) We're just watching somebody eat?
Is this really what this is?
I'm getting so hungry, guys. Why are you doing this to me?
She is making me so jealous.
I think this might be the people that stream themselves just eating.
(speaking Korean)
Yay, cake!
This is what-- it's just-- I'm just watching-- I'm being trolled.
So wait. Is he just eating?
(laughing) Okay.
The closer it gets doesn't mean I can eat it.
If this is what I think it is, this is literally my dream job.
We're quitting YouTube. We are eating and live-streaming.
(chuckling) Wow!
This guy's like a buck 20. He ate that whole thing?
Is this like a pay-per-view watching somebody eat sort of thing?
"YouTubers React to Other People Eating Food."
How come she's not looking into the camera?
It looks like she's got a nice condenser mic
to really pick up the eating sounds.
Is this YouTube?
(in video: crunching)
Oh my gosh. Shut your mouth when you chew!
I'm delighted by this.
I hope they're monetizing.
(reporter) Park Seo-yeon lays a Korean feast
in front of her computer.
Then she turns on a video camera, she eats,
- and thousands of viewers watch her. - Thousands?!
(reporter) This is the latest fad in South Korea:
gastronomic voyeurism.
- That sounds so disgusting. - Gastronomic voyeurism?
(reporter) ...diva broadcasts herself eating in her apartment
- for up to three hours every day. - Three hours of eating?!
(reporter) ...chat with her or send virtual balloons
- that translate into cash. - Wow.
(reporter) She earns more than 9,000 US dollars a month...
...and has quit her job at a consulting firm.
She was a consultant! Yes!
$9,000 a month? Sign me the hell up.
I'm done. Okay. Take off my mic. I'm outta here.
Hold on, I need a moment.
Give me one more second.
Give me these questions.

(Finebros) What were your initial thoughts
when you heard about this being something that was a success?
People watching it are probably kinda creepy.
I'm wasting my life. This is what I should be doing.
If I had known all these years of my life,
I would have filmed every meal.
That's the American dream, honestly.
And to see that South Korea's doing it before us is a travesty.
I already do candy-eating videos on my channel,
but not to that extent.
If these people can do it, I could level it up as well.
I shouldn't be surprised, 'cause look at us.
We found success playing video games
and people watching us play video games.
I don't really get it. Actually, no.
Not really get it. I don't get it.
I get it. I get it.
'Cause you would watch?
I would watch. (laughs)
For what purpose? What?
It's really satisfying to be eating
while watching other people eat.
I'm learning so much about her right now.
I don't know if we can be friends after this.
(Finebros) Is this entertainment to you?
I can imagine myself putting it on at a party
and just playing it.
I don't find it entertaining.
I don't know. What's the point?
Look at Twitter and all these other things.
We're stalkers. We kinda like that.
I kind of like it, only because I really like ASMR.
Do you know what that is?
It's like weird videos of people tapping.
(Finebros) Why do you think people enjoy it?
(laughing uncontrollably) I don't know.
I honestly think it could only be either sexual
or just really relaxing.
Every time I sit down and eating something,
I think, "I have to Snapchat this."
So I think that might be, I mean...
People watch us playing video games
because they don't have the game, right?
So it's like, it's living vicariously through another person.
I mean, why do you watch the Food Network?
You watch it to look at the delicious food.
The way that they're commenting on the food,
describing the food, they must be good.
Like a gamer, you can't just be playing games.
You have to be able to talk about it
while you have to be fun to listen to. You have to be funny.
(Finebros) Here's some reason people have said this works.
Some say it's a feeling that, when you are on a diet
and you really wish you could eat this food,
you watch someone else eat it instead.
Sounds like torture.
Yeah, I feel like that would make me want to eat more.
Oh, like, just living vicariously.
I honestly, I get it.
Here I am on my diet,
and I appreciate you eating that noodle dish,
but am I really gonna pay money to send you a balloon
to thank you for eating that dish
so that I could voyeuristically enjoy that food? No. No.
(Finebros) The other interesting reason is, in South Korea,
a rising demographic are adults who live alone
and the element of not wanting to eat dinner by yourself.
Oh no!
(Finebros) And watching this while they eat
feels like they're not having dinner by themselves.
Oh, okay. That's sad.
That is beautiful.
The internet-- bringing people together.
It's like a date, and they don't even know they're on that date.
It's a bit like role-playing.
So I guess it's fun, but it's not my thing.
(Finebros) They call the content genre "mukbang."
Okay.
Mukbang?
- They are "Mukbang" at the beginning. - Mukbang!
(Finebros) Which is the combination of the two Korean words
- for "eating" and "broadcast." - Duh. (laughs)
(Finebros) So if this is now entertainment, what's next?
Dude, that question right there you cannot predict.
A year ago, you could not have predicted this!
What's next for me? I'm switching jobs.
That's what the [bleep] is up.
I guess just watching people sleep?
Maybe watch people work?
Oh, toilets.
I'm sure actually that's been done
in places that aren't YouTube or Twitch.
I don't want to go to those places.
(Finebros) Finally, we would like you to participate in mukbang.
- Okay. - Really?
- Oh my god! - Oh, thank god.
- That looks so good. - Damn, that looks good.
(chuckling)
So I'm allergic to eggs. So...
- Sucka! Mm! - I know.
But this is just as exciting.
Oh, oh, oh.
Hold on. I gotta hold it up to the camera.
Mm-hmm.
This is, uh, my chocolate cake.
Wait, you have to be really cute. Be more cute.
