I couldn't keep watching my oldest son

But the real change came more gradually.

Over the next year,

while my family was righting itself,

I started to realize

that even if I could go back into government,

I didn't want to.

I am still completely committed

to the cause of male-female equality,

but let's think about what that equality really means,

and how best to achieve it.

I always accepted the idea

最良の方法は何かを 考えていきましょう

that the most respected and powerful people

私が いつも受け入れてきた考えとは

in our society are men at the top of their careers,

社会で最も尊敬できて 権力のある人は

so that the measure of male-female equality

キャリアの頂点にいる男性達だと

ought to be how many women are in those positions:

prime ministers, presidents, CEOs,

directors, managers, Nobel laureates, leaders.

I still think we should do everything we possibly can

to achieve that goal.

But that's only half of real equality,

and I now think we're never going to get there

I suggest that real equality,

does not just mean valuing women

It means creating a much wider range

And to get there, we have to change our workplaces,

In the workplace,

real equality means valuing family

just as much as work,

and understanding that the two reinforce each other.

As a leader and as a manager,

I have always acted on the mantra,

リーダーや管理者として

if family comes first,

work does not come second --

家族が１番なら

life comes together.

If you work for me, and you have a family issue,

I expect you to attend to it,

and my confidence has always been borne out,

Workers who have a reason to get home

In policy terms,

is just as important

no matter who does it.

Think about it: Breadwinning and caregiving

are equally necessary for human survival.

At least if we get beyond a barter economy,

somebody has to earn an income

and someone else has to convert that income

Now most of you, when you hear me

talk about breadwinning and caregiving,

instinctively translate those categories

into men's work and women's work.

And we don't typically challenge

why men's work is advantaged.

But consider a same-sex couple

典型的な問題に 挑もうとしているわけではありません

like my friends Sarah and Emily.

同姓カップルについて考えてみましょう

They're psychiatrists.

私の友人のサラとエミリーは

They got married five years ago,

２人とも精神科医で

and now they have two-year-old twins.

５年前に結婚して

They love being mothers,

現在２歳の双子を育てています

but they also love their work,

and they're really good at what they do.

仕事も好きで

So how are they going to divide up

breadwinning and caregiving responsibilities?

Should one of them stop working

or reduce hours to be home?

Or should they both change their practices

働くのを辞めたり 勤務時間を短くすべきなのでしょうか

so they can have much more flexible schedules?

それとも２人とも柔軟な予定を組めるよう

And what criteria should they use

職場を変えるべきなのでしょうか？

to make that decision?

その決断を下すにあたり どのような基準を

Is it who makes the most money

使うべきでしょうか

or who is most committed to her career?

たくさんお金を稼いでいる人 それとも―

Or who has the most flexible boss?

キャリアを積んでいる人で 判断すべきでしょうか？

The same-sex perspective helps us see

または 最も柔軟な上司がいる方でしょうか？

that juggling work and family

同性婚カップルの視点でとらえると

are not women's problems,

仕事と家庭をやりくりするのは

they're family problems.

女性の問題ではなく

And Sarah and Emily are the lucky ones,

家庭の問題だとわかります

because they have a choice

サラとエミリーは幸運な例です

about how much they want to work.

彼女達はどれだけ働きたいか

Millions of men and women

自分たちで選べるのですから

have to be both breadwinners and caregivers

何百万人もの男女が

just to earn the income they need,

and many of those workers are scrambling.

They're patching together care arrangements

that are inadequate

protections for pregnant women,

and care for the elderly and the disabled.

Those governments invest in that infrastructure

the same way they invest in roads and bridges

and tunnels and trains.

Those societies also show you

同じやり方です

that breadwinning and caregiving

reinforce each other.

They routinely rank among the top 15 countries

相互に補強する関係が見えてきます

of the most globally competitive economies,

but at the same time,

they rank very high on the OECD Better Life Index.

In fact, they rank higher than other governments,

like my own, the U.S., or Switzerland,

So changing our workplaces

and building infrastructures of care

would make a big difference,

but we're not going to get equally valued choices

unless we change our culture,

and the kind of cultural change required

means re-socializing men.

Increasingly in developed countries,

women are socialized to believe that our place

is no longer only in the home,

but men are actually still where they always were.

Men are still socialized to believe

that they have to be breadwinners,

that to derive their self-worth

他人を蹴落として

from how high they can climb over other men

The feminist revolution still has a long way to go.

信じ込まされているのです

It's certainly not complete.

男女平等に向けた改革は長い道のりです

But 60 years after

この戦いは間違いなく終わっていません

"The Feminine Mystique" was published,

しかし『女らしさの神話』が

many women actually have

世に出てから60年が経ち

more choices than men do.

多くの女性が男性よりも

We can decide to be a breadwinner,

多くの選択肢を手にしています

a caregiver, or any combination of the two.

お金を稼ぐことも 家庭を守ることも

When a man, on the other hand,

その２つに同時に取り組む事もできるのです

decides to be a caregiver,

その一方で 男性が家庭を守ることを

he puts his manhood on the line.

選択するには

His friends may praise his decision,

男らしさを犠牲にしなければなりません

but underneath, they're scratching their heads.

周りの友人は その決断を讃えるでしょう

Isn't the measure of a man

でも心の底では困惑しています

his willingness to compete with other men

権力や名声のために

for power and prestige?

他者と競うことこそ

And as many women hold that view as men do.

男のあるべき姿ではないのだろうかと

We know that lots of women

男性と同じ位 多くの女性も このような考え方を持っているのです
