boasting he can run faster than any one else

誰よりも速く走れることを自慢していました。

is forever teasing tortoise

いつもかめのことをからかっていました。

for his slowness

かめは何をするのもゆっくりだったからです。

then, one day

そんなある日

the irate tortoise answered back

かめはひどく怒って言い返しました。

who do you think you are?

何様のつもりなんだ？

there's no denying you are swift

君が速く走れることは間違いないけど

but even you can be beaten!

君だって負けることはあるはずだよ！

the hare squealed with laughter!!

うさぎはひーひーと笑い転げました。

beaten in a race ? by whom ?

駆けっこで負ける？誰に？

not you surely

君じゃないことは確かだね。

I bet there is nobody in the world that can win against me, I am so speedy...

世界中探したって僕に勝てる人はいないだろうよ。とっても速いんだから・・・

now why don't you try?

じゃあ試してみようか？

annoyed by such bragging,the tortoise accepted the challenge

うさぎの自慢気な様子に我慢ならなくなったかめは、うさぎの挑戦を受けてしまいました。

a course is planned, and the next day at dawn, they stood at starting line.

駆けっこのコースが決まり、あくる日の明け方、二人はスタートラインに立ちました。

the hare yawned sleepily, as the meek tortoise tried to slowly off

真面目なかめがゆっくりと走り出した時、うさぎは眠たそうにあくびをしていました。

when the hare saw how painfully slow his rival was

ライバルがひどくノロノロと走っているのを見たうさぎは

he decided, half asleep on his feet, to have quick nap.

立ったままウトウト昼寝をすることにしました。

"take your time" he said..

「急がなくていいよ」うさぎは言いました・・・

I will have forty winks and catch up with you in minute.

ひと眠りしたら、すぐに追いつくから。

the hare woke with a start from fitful sleep

ウトウトと寝たり起きたりしていたうさぎは、ハッと目を覚ましました。

and gazed around, looking for the tortoise

じっと見渡し、かめを探しました。

but the creature is only a short distance away

かめはほんの少し先にいるだけでした。

having barely covered the third of the course.

やっとのことでコースの3分の1を走り終わったところでした。

waiting aside, relieved. The hare decides, he might as well have his breakfast too..

スタートラインにいるうさぎは安心し、朝ご飯を食べた方がマシだと思いました。

and off he went to munch some cabbages he noticed in a near by field

うさぎは近くの原っぱに植わっていたキャベツをむしゃむしゃと食べました。

but the heavy meal and hot sun made his eye lashes droop

しかし、ボリュームのある食事と暖かな太陽のせいで、うさぎの目はとろんとして来ました。

with a careless glance of the tortoise, now half way along the course

もうコースの半分まで来ていたかめをちらっと見ただけで、

he decided to have another snooze

また居眠りすることにしました。

before flashing past the winning post..

ゴール地点に思いを巡らせ・・

and smiling at the thought of the look on tortoise's face

うさぎに追い越された時のかめの顔を想像してにやにやしながら、

when it saw the hare speed by, he fell asleep

うさぎは眠りに落ちていきました。

and was soon snoring happily

そしてすぐに幸せそうにいびきをかき始めたのでした。

the sun started to sink below the horizon

太陽が地平線の下に沈み始め

and the tortoise, who have been plotting towards the winning post since morning

朝からゴール地点を目指して走っていたかめは

now scarcely a yard from the finish

今やゴールまで100センチもないところまで来ていました。

at that very point the hare woke with a jolt

まさにその時、うさぎはガバッと起きだしました。

he could see the tortoise a speck in a distance

かめが遠くにポツンと見えていました。

and away he rashed

うさぎは大急ぎで駆け出しました。

he left and bounded at a great rate

うさぎは風のような速さで跳ねて行きました。

his tongue longing and gasping for breath

舌を出し、息を弾ませながら。

just a little more and he be first at the finish

もう少しで一番にゴールに着くところでしたが、

but the hare's last leap was just too late.

うさぎの最後のひと跳ねはあまりにも遅すぎました。

The tortoise had beaten him to the winning post

かめの方が先にゴール地点に辿り着いていたのです。

可愛そうなうさぎは

tired and in disgrace

疲れ、そして恥ずかしさのあまり

he slumped down beside the tortoise who was silently smiling at him..

うさぎに向かって静かに微笑むかめの横にガックリと座り込みました・・

"slow and steady does it every time" he said

「いつだってゆっくりと着実にやればうまくいくんだよ」かめが言いました。
