  • Hello everyone!

  • Welcome to Idiom 100, where we learn 100 commonly used idioms by native English speakers.

  • All of the explanations are in English, so it might be challenging for you,

  • but just try to imagine the meanings in your head and study hard and soon you'll be able to use these idioms in your conversations.

  • Is everyone ready? Let's begin.

  • Hello again!

  • Today's idiom is: fill in.

  • Fill in.

  • So, let's try to think about what this meaning might be and how we can imagine it.

  • Let's think of a glass of milk, okay, and it's full. It's a full glass of milk.

  • And you're going to pour out a little bit of milk.

  • So, now it's not full, but you want it to be full, so let's take some other milk and fill it in and now it's full again. You filled in.

  • Okay, so let's try to think about the meaning as we listen to 2 examples.

  • The first example is:

  • Would it be too much trouble if I asked you to fill in for me at the club meeting?

  • Okay, but just this once.

  • Okay, so he asked for his friend to fill in for him at the meeting.

  • Maybe he can't go to the meeting, so his friend will take his place.

  • Yeah, he can't go, so his friend will go and fill in for him.

  • Alright, so let's listen to the second example.

  • Should I fill her in with the information we went over?

  • Yes, please fill her in. She needs to understand everything before we move on.

  • Okay, so in this case, you have 2 people and this person has all of the information, they're full.

  • But she doesn't have all the information, so they need to fill her in, give her all the information, okay?

  • So, this idiom, fill in, has 2 meanings in what we discussed in the examples.

  • Alright, so the first one means to replace.

  • Yeah, one person will be absent, so they need someone to fill in.

  • And then the other situation, they don't have all of the information, so you need to fill her in or fill him in.

  • Okay, so it's a little confusing with the 2 definitions, but I think you can try to use them both.

  • Alright, so let's try to use them and I'll see you again next time.
