I am the only architect in the world

ただし 世界でただ一人の

making buildings out of paper like this cardboard tube,

紙で建物をつくる建築家です こんなボール紙の筒を使います

and this exhibition is the first one I did using paper tubes.

この展覧会の会場設計が 私が紙管を使った最初の仕事でした

1986, much, much longer before people started talking

1986年です 人々がエコロジーとか

about ecological issues and environmental issues,

環境問題について 騒ぎ始めるよりも随分と前に

I just started testing the paper tube

私は紙管を

in order to use this as a building structure.

建物の構造体として使えるように 試験を始めていました

It's very complicated to test the new material for the building,

新しい材料を建築に取り入れる試験は 非常に複雑なものですが

but this is much stronger than I expected,

紙管は当初思っていたよりも はるかに強く

and also it's very easy to waterproof.

防水加工も とても簡単です

Because it's industrial material,

さらに 産業資材ですから

it's also possible to fireproof.

耐火処理を施すのも 可能です

Then I built the temporary structure, 1990.

そして 1990年には 仮設建造物を建てました

This is the first temporary building made out of paper.

こちらが 最初の 紙の仮設建物です

There are 330 tubes, diameter 55 [centimeters],

直径 55 センチの紙管330本と わずか12本の

there are only 12 tubes with a diameter of 120 centimeters,

直径120センチ

or four feet, wide.

つまり４フィートの 紙管でできています

As you see it in the photo, inside is the toilet.

この写真にあるように 中にはトイレがあります

In case you're finished with toilet paper,

もしトイレットペーパーが 切れていたら

you can tear off the inside of the wall. (Laughter)

内壁をはがすことも出来ますから (笑)

So it's very useful.

とても便利なわけです

Year 2000, there was a big expo in Germany.

2000年には ドイツで 大きな万国博覧会がありました

I was asked to design the building,

ここの建物の 設計を依頼されました

because the theme of the expo was environmental issues.

万博のテーマが 環境問題だったからです

So I was chosen to build the pavilion out of paper tubes,

パビリオンを 紙管で建築するために選ばれました

recyclable paper.

リサイクルできる紙管です

My goal of the design is not when it's completed.

私の設計のゴールは 建物が完成した時ではありません

My goal was when the building was demolished,

私のゴールは 建物が解体された時です

because each country makes a lot of pavilions

というのも 各国がパビリオンを作れば すごい数になって

but after half a year, we create a lot of industrial waste,

半年後には それが大量の 産業廃棄物となるわけですから

so my building has to be reused or recycled.

私の建物は 再利用かリサイクルが 可能でなければなりません

After, the building was recycled.

閉会後に 建物はリサイクルされました

So that was the goal of my design.

私の設計のゴールは 達成されたのです

Then I was very lucky to win the competition

その後 とても幸運なことに フランスのメスに

to build the second Pompidou Center in France in the city of Metz.

ポンピドゥー・センターの 分館を建てるというコンペに勝ちました

Because I was so poor, I wanted to rent an office in Paris,

当時 とても貧しくて パリに事務所を借りたかったのですが

but I couldn't afford it, so I decided to bring my students to Paris

手が届かなかったので パリに学生を連れて行き

to build our office on top of the Pompidou Center in Paris

自分たちでポンピドゥー・センターの 屋根の上に事務所を

by ourselves. (Laughter)

建てることにしました (笑)

So we brought the paper tubes and the wooden joints

私たちは紙管と 木の継手を持ち込んで

to complete the 35-meter-long office.

35メートルの細長い事務所を 完成させました

We stayed there for six years without paying any rent.

１円も家賃を払うことなく ６年間そこにいました

(Laughter) (Applause)

(笑)(拍手)

Thank you. I had one big problem.

ありがとう ただ１つ大きな問題がありました

Because we were part of the exhibition,

事務所は展示の一環でしたから

even if my friend wanted to see me, they had to buy a ticket to see me.

訪ねて来る友人でさえも 入場券を買わされていました

(Laughter) That was the problem.

(笑) 困ったもんでした

Then I completed the Pompidou Center in Metz.

そうして完成させた ポンビドゥー・センター・メスは

It's a very popular museum now,

今では 高い人気を誇る美術館です

and I created a big monument for the government.

私は政府のために 大きなモニュメントを造ったのです

But then I was very disappointed

しかし その時

at my profession as an architect,

建築家という職業に 私はひどく失望しました

because we are not helping, we are not working for society,

建築家は人助けもしなければ 社会の役にも立っていないのに

but we are working for privileged people,

特権階級の人たちや お金持ちや

rich people, government, developers.

政府や開発業者の為に 働いているからです

They have money and power.

彼らはお金と権力を持っていますが

Those are invisible.

どちらも目に見えないので

So they hire us to visualize their power and money

それを示すために モニュメントのような建造物を

by making monumental architecture.

我々建築家に作らせるのです

That is our profession, even historically it's the same,

建築家とはそういう職業で 歴史的に見ても

even now we are doing the same.

現代においても 同じ様な仕組みです

So I was very disappointed that we are not working for society,

多くの人々が自然災害によって

even though there are so many people

家を失っているというのに 建築家は社会の役に立っていない―

who lost their houses by natural disasters.

そのことに とても失望していました

But I must say they are no longer natural disasters.

実際のところ もはや「自然」災害ではないのです

For example, earthquakes never kill people,

たとえば地震そのもので 人は亡くなりません

but collapse of the buildings kills people.

建物が倒壊するから 亡くなるのです

That's the responsibility of architects.

これは建築家の責任です

Then people need some temporary housing,

仮設住宅が必要とされる場に

but there are no architects working there

建築家の姿はありません

because we are too busy working for privileged people.

特権階級の為に働くことで 忙し過ぎるからです

So I thought, even as architects,

そこで私は考えました 「建築家と言えども

we can be involved in the reconstruction of temporary housing.

仮設住宅の建設に関われば いいじゃないか

We can make it better.

私たちは現状を改善できる」

So that is why I started working in disaster areas.

こんな理由から あちこちの被災地で 働くようになりました

1994, there was a big disaster in Rwanda, Africa.

1994年にアフリカのルワンダで 大きな災難がありました

Two tribes, Hutu and Tutsi, fought each other.

フツとツチの２つの種族が 武力衝突し

Over two million people became refugees.

二百万人以上が 難民になりました

But I was so surprised to see the shelter,

私は国連が設営管理していた 難民キャンプを見て

refugee camp organized by the U.N.

非常に驚きました

They're so poor,

すごく気の毒な状況でした 雨期で 難民たちは

and they are freezing with blankets during the rainy season.

毛布に包まって 凍えていました

In the shelters built by the U.N.,

国連の避難所で 支給されたのは

they were just providing a plastic sheet,

プラスチックシートだけだったので

and the refugees had to cut the trees, and just like this.

難民はこのように木を 切らなければなりませんでした

But over two million people cut trees.

二百万人以上が 木を切ったため

It just became big, heavy deforestation

甚大な森林破壊となり

and an environmental problem.

環境問題が起きました

That is why they started providing aluminum pipes, aluminum barracks.

このため国連はアルミパイプと バラックを支給しましたが

Very expensive, they throw them out for money,

アルミは高価なので 難民はパイプを売ってしまい

then cutting trees again.

また木が切られました

So I proposed my idea to improve the situation

私は この事態を改善する為に リサイクル紙管を使うことを

using these recycled paper tubes

提案しました

because this is so cheap and also so strong,

紙管は非常に安価で 強度があるからです

but my budget is only 50 U.S. dollars per unit.

予算は１軒あたり わずか50米ドルでした

We built 50 units to do that as a monitoring test

私たちはモニター試験用に 50軒の小屋を建て

for the durability and moisture and termites and so on.

耐久性や防水性能 シロアリ耐性などを調べました

And then, a year afterward 1995 in Kobe, Japan,

そして翌年の1995年には 日本の神戸で

we had a big earthquake.

大きな地震が起こりました

Nearly 7000 people were killed,

７千人近い方が亡くなり

and the city like this Nagata district,

長田区をはじめ 街全体が

all the city was burned in a fire after the earthquake.

地震の後の火災によって 焼け野原になりました

And also I found out there's many Vietnamese refugees

やがて私は 被災した大勢のベトナム難民が

suffering and gathering at a Catholic church --

カトリック教会に 集まっていることを知りました

all the buildings were totally destroyed.

教会の建物は全壊していました

So I went there and also I proposed to the priests,

私は現場へ行って 神父に こう提案しました

"Why don't we rebuild the church out of paper tubes?"

「紙管で教会を 再建しませんか？」

And he said, "Oh God, are you crazy?

すると こう言われました 「アホか！火事の後なのに

After a fire, what are you proposing?"

何を考えてるんだ」

So he never trusted me, but I didn't give up.

彼は全く信じてくれませんでしたが 私は諦めませんでした

I started commuting to Kobe,

神戸に通うようになり

and I met the society of Vietnamese people.

ベトナム人コミュニティの人々と 出会いました

They were living like this with very poor plastic sheets in the park.

非常に粗末なプラスチックシートのテントを建て 公園で暮らしていました

So I proposed to rebuild. I did fundraising.

再建を提案して 資金集めを行いました

I made a paper tube shelter for them,

彼らのために 紙管で住居を作りました

and in order to make it easy to be built by students

学生でも簡単に組み立てられ

and also easy to demolish,

また解体も簡単に できるようにしました

I used beer crates as a foundation.

基礎にはビールケースを使いました

I asked the Kirin beer company to propose,

キリンビールに 提供を求めました

because at that time,

というのも 当時アサヒビールのケースは

the Asahi beer company made their plastic beer crates red,

赤色だったものですから

which doesn't go with the color of the paper tubes.

紙管の色とうまく 合いませんでした

The color coordination is very important.

カラーコーディネートは 重要ですよね

And also I still remember, we were expecting

忘れられないのは そのビールケースが

to have a beer inside the plastic beer crate,

ビール入りで来ると 期待していたのに

but it came empty. (Laughter)

カラで届いたことです (笑)

So I remember it was so disappointing.

とてもがっかりしたのを 覚えています

So during the summer with my students,

こうして学生と一緒に その夏のうちに

we built over 50 units of the shelters.

50軒の仮設住宅を建てました

Finally the priest, finally he trusted me to rebuild.

とうとう神父の信頼も得られ 教会再建について

He said, "As long as you collect money by yourself,

「そちらで資金も人手も 用意するなら

bring your students to build, you can do it."

いいですよ」と 言ってもらいました

So we spent five weeks rebuilding the church.

５週間で 教会を再建しました

It was meant to stay there for three years,

教会は３年間だけ 使われる予定でしたが

but actually it stayed there 10 years because people loved it.

人々に愛され 実際には 10年間使われました

Then, in Taiwan, they had a big earthquake,

その後 台湾で 大きな地震があった際に

and we were proposed to donate this church,

この教会を寄付してほしいと 申し出がありました

so we dismantled them,

教会を解体して 台湾へ送り

we sent them over to be built by volunteer people.

ボランティアに 建ててもらいました

It stayed there in Taiwan as a permanent church even now.

今でも恒久的な教会として 台湾に残っています

So this building became a permanent building.

この建物は 恒久的な建物になりました

Then I wonder, what is a permanent and what is a temporary building?

となると 何が恒久的で 何が仮設なのか疑問がわきます

Even a building made in paper

紙で出来た建物であっても

can be permanent as long as people love it.

人々に愛されれば 恒久的なものに なり得るわけです

Even a building made of concrete

一方 コンクリート造でも

can easily collapse by an earthquake.

地震で簡単に倒壊してしまいます

If a building is built by a developer in order to make money,

開発業者の金儲けの為に 作られた建物だと

other developers buy the land, they destroy it and put a new one.

次の開発業者が土地を買い入れ 建物を壊して新しく建てます

So, it's very temporary.

つまり 一時的なものになるのです

So, that is a difference.

違いはそこなのです

If a building is built even in paper, if people love it, it becomes permanent.

紙の建物でも人々に愛されれば 恒久的なものになり

Even a concrete building can be very temporary,

コンクリート造でも 金儲けの為につくると

if that is made to make money.

一時的なものになるのです

In 1999, in Turkey, there's the big earthquake,

1999年にトルコで 大地震が起きました

I went there to use the local material to build a shelter.

現地へ行き 地元の材料を使って 仮設住宅をつくりました

2001, in West India, I also built a shelter.

2001年には西インドでも 仮設住宅をつくりました

In 2004, in Sri Lanka, after the Sumatra earthquake and tsunami,

2004年にはスリランカで スマトラ地震と津波の被害に遭った―

I rebuilt Islamic fishermen's villages.

イスラム系の漁村の 復興建設を行いました

And in 2008, in Chengdu, Sichuan area in China,

2008年には 中国四川省の成都で

nearly 70 000 people were killed,

７万人近くが亡くなり

and also especially many of the schools were destroyed

特に多くの学校が 倒壊しました

because of the corruption between the authority and the contractor.

汚職がらみの手抜き工事が 原因です

I was asked to rebuild the temporary [school].

仮設の校舎を建ててくれと 頼まれました

I brought my Japanese students to work with the Chinese students.

日本から学生を連れて行き 中国の学生と一緒に作業をさせて

In one month, we completed 9 classrooms over 500 square meters.

１カ月後には教室が９つ完成し 面積全体が500平米を超えました

It's still used, even after the current earthquake in China.

最近また中国で地震がありましたが 校舎は今も使われています

In 2009, in Italy, L'Aquila, also they had a big earthquake.

2009年にはイタリアのラクイラでも 大きな地震がありました
