But what if I carved out a triangle from this side here?

this triangle had a quarter of the area of the full triangle.

I did the same thing again with each of the smaller triangles.

残った小さい三角形についても 同じことをやってみる

Again, a quarter of the remaining area -- gone.

すると また面積が４分の１減る

And I just kept going.

これを続けていくと

After an infinite number of cuts,

無限回の後には

I was satisfied that my triangle had zero area.

思い通りに面積の消失した 三角形が出来上がりってわけさ

A bounded shape with zero area.

境界があるのに面積はゼロだ

Now, it's not often that I surprise myself,

こんなすごいこと いつも出来るわけじゃないが

but my own two mitts had created something crazy,

作り上げたってわけさ

Now, show me a shape with finite area,

Mmm ... I hadn't been this stuck

うーむ こんなに手こずったのは

since the Rubik's Cube fiasco of '58.

1958年にルービックキューブで へまをやらかした時以来だ

All the shapes I knew had perimeters.

どんなものだって 周囲の長さがある

Circles: 2πr. Triangles: sum of their sides.

円：２πr 三角形：辺の長さの和だ

What's this?

An angle from heaven.

天からの恵みだ

What if I were to pinch each side, like so.

各辺をこうやってつまんでみると どうなるのか

A third of the way through, just so.

３辺ともやると こんな感じになる

And do it again,

もう一度やってみる

and again,

and again.

さらに もう一度

After each pinch, the perimeter got a third longer

一通りつまむ毎に周囲の長さが ３分の１ずつ長くなっていく

because where there had been three line segments,

now there were four.

As for the area,

面積はというと

every pinch made more triangles, that's true.

そう 一回つまむ毎に 三角形が作り出されていくが

But those triangles were getting smaller and smaller.

どんどん小さくなっていく

You could say that the area was converging,

そして図形全体の面積は

approaching a fixed number,

ある一定の値に近づいていく

while the perimeter was just getting bigger and bigger,

一方 周囲の長さは ただ大きくなっていくばかりで

uncontrollably ballooning like an overindulgent birthday clown.

誕生日に大はしゃぎする輩を 止められなくなるようなもんだ

After infinity pinches, flimflam, there it was:

無限につまみ続け いじってみれば ほらこの通り

Finite area, but infinite perimeter.

有限の面積と 無限の周囲長

Now that is a piece of work.

I was out of ideas,

And then it hit me.

"She's a heart breaker, my fractal femme fatale.

「私の心を切り裂く女性 フラクタルの妖女だ

Will she do?"

彼女が答えだな?」

"Yes, she'll do just fine."

「ソウダ 彼女ナラ正解ダ」

It was dark, and at first I thought the cave was empty,

そこは暗闇だった 最初は洞穴には何もないと思った

but then I noticed: the box.

しかし しばらくして箱に気づいた [パン＜ドーラ＞]

The dame had played me like a triangle.

彼女は私をまるで三角形のように扱った

She had told me she wanted to go home.

彼女は家に戻りたいと言っていたはずだ

What she really wanted was to bring her home here.

本当はここを住みかにしたかったのだ

The fractals spread everywhere.

Most of them the same

no matter how deep you looked at them,

Some had infinitely long perimeters,

all of them created through infinite repetition.
