The way we experience love, it is the absence of separation or the absence of otherness.

When we feel we love someone, the distance or the separation between us collapses.

That's what love is, the absence of the sense of separation.

When consciousness wants to manifest its infinite potential, as we've discussed this weekend, it cannot do so directly.

It has to collapse into a finite mind.

In other words, separation is the price consciousness pays for manifestation.

Because we understand, we as finite minds understand that love is the highest experience there is.

Can anybody imagine an experience higher or more nobler than love?

We all know that love is the height of experience.

From the perspective of the finite mind, we know apparent separation, apparent otherness.

But the one thing the finite mind wants above all else is to be divested of the sense of separation.

That's why we love friendship.

That's why we love intimate relationship.

Because in friendship, an intimate relationship, the sense of separation, to a greater or lesser extent, dissolves.

And reality, pure consciousness, or in this case love, shines.

So consciousness, it's not that love is an attribute of consciousness.

In the experience of love, the self and the other dissolve.

He said, true lovers never really meet one another.

They are in each other all along.

Love is not a meeting of two people.

It is the dissolution of the apparent separation between self and other.

And the revelation of the prior unity of these two apparently separate selves.

So love is not an experience that a separate self has.

It is the dissolution of the self.

The sense of the separate self.

The revelation of reality, the revelation of consciousness.

Consciousness is love.

And that is why the separate self, which is of course made of pure consciousness, there is this recognition.

So love is the trace that infinite consciousness leaves of itself in the finite mind.

Love is a trace of God's presence in the mind.

And the mind, although everything it knows is limited, it recognizes that the experience of love is something that is beyond itself.

The finite mind recognizes that the experience of love is like a divine intervention in its life.

有限の心は、愛の体験が人生への神の介入のようなものだと認識する。

That is why we value love above all else.

Is that the longing that one feels to return to that love?

それは、その愛に戻りたいと感じる切望なのだろうか？

Yes, the experience of longing is love veiled.

そう、憧れの経験はベールに包まれた愛なのだ。

There is only consciousness.

あるのは意識だけだ。

There is only love.

あるのは愛だけだ。

When that consciousness, for the sake of manifestation, limits itself in the form of each of our minds, it veils its own nature from itself.

その意識が、顕現のために、私たち一人ひとりのマインドという形で自らを制限するとき、その意識は自らの本質を自分自身から覆い隠してしまう。

And therefore love seems to be absent.

だから愛がないように見える。

This absence of love is felt from the perspective of the separate self as the longing for the beloved.

この愛の不在は、分離した自己の視点から、最愛の人への憧れとして感じられる。

So this longing, this sense of lack, this longing is inevitable for the separate self.

だから、この憧れ、欠乏感、この憧れは、分離した自己にとって避けられないものなのだ。

It is the core feeling that all separate selves, the wound in the heart of all separate selves, this feeling, this intuition of love, but this feeling that I am cut off.

I need to be completed.

You visualize the chocolate.

And sure enough, the first taste of chocolate, it does bring your longing to an end.

In that moment, you and the chocolate merge.

In other words, your sense of separation dissolves.

And your true nature shines.

That is the experience of enjoyment that we were talking about.

You are enjoying not the taste of chocolate.

It is the taste of your true nature that you are enjoying.

It is the same with friendship.

The reason why we want to merge with another is not because we want to merge with another person or another body.

他の人と融合したいのは、他の人や他の身体と融合したいからではない。

It is because the separate self longs above all else to be divested of its separation.

それは、分離した自己が、その分離から解き放たれることを何よりも切望しているからである。

And as a result, to stand revealed in its original form, its prior unlimited form, which is love itself.

そしてその結果、愛そのものであるその本来の姿、その前の無制限な姿で姿を現すことになる。

I think I have always felt that longing was somehow divine.

私はいつも、憧れはどこか神聖なものだと感じていたように思う。

And maybe a higher desire.

It is divine.

All desires are the desires for God.

All desires.

Would any of us here desire an intimate relationship if we were convinced that that relationship would bring us misery?

No, we would rather stay unhealthy.

The only reason we want to be healthy is because we think that health will bring us happiness.

All desires are ultimately the desires for God.

They are the desires to be divested of the sense of limitation.

But divested of the sense of separation, enabling our essential being to shine as it is, unlimited.

All desires are a desire for that in disguise.

So yes, your intuition that your longing is divine is absolutely right.

It is divine.

And in fact, from the perspective of the separate self, the separate self feels that I long for happiness or I long for the divine.

Because the separate self believes that it is a separate, independent, the existing self.

It is the divine calling us back to itself.

That having contracted itself into a finite mind, infinite consciousness just wants to go back to its natural state.

That impulse in consciousness to go back to its natural state of expansion is felt from the level of the finite mind as the desire for happiness or the longing for God.

意識の中にある、自然な拡大状態に戻ろうとする衝動は、有限な心のレベルからは、幸福への願望や神への憧れとして感じられる。

It is not really the separate self that desires happiness or longings for God.

幸福や神への憧れを望むのは、本当は分離した自己ではない。

There is no separate self to long for God or to desire for happiness.

神を慕ったり、幸福を願ったりする別個の自己は存在しない。

There is just consciousness with its nature of love and unconditional joy and imperturbable peace that contracts itself.

そこにあるのは、愛と無条件の喜び、穏やかな平和という性質を持つ意識だけであり、それ自体が収縮する。

And as a result of this contraction, there is this natural impulse in it to go back to its state of equilibrium.

そしてこの収縮の結果、均衡状態に戻ろうとする自然な衝動が生まれる。

That impulse in consciousness to go back to its natural state is felt from the point of view of the individual as the desire for happiness.

自然な状態に戻ろうとする意識の衝動は、個人の立場からは幸福への欲求として感じられる。

I desire happiness.

私は幸せを望んでいる。

It is never the separate self that desires happiness.

幸福を望むのは、決して分離した自己ではない。

It is consciousness that veils itself with its own activity.

自らの活動で自らを覆い隠すのが意識なのだ。

As a result, seems to cut itself off from its innate peace and love and fulfillment.

その結果、生来の平和や愛や充実感から自らを切り離してしまうようだ。

And as a result, unveils itself and returns to itself again.

そしてその結果、自らを解き放ち、再び自らに戻る。

So yes, your longing is divine.

そう、君の憧れは神聖なものなんだ。

It is God calling us back to itself.

神が私たちを自らに呼び戻すのだ。
