How do I know if I'm in mix and not just in my head voice and singing really powerfully or in my chest voice somehow?

So, these two checks are going to demystify it for you once and for all.

I'll help you dial that in and then these tips are going to make a lot more sense.

The first is a resonance check.

The second is a placement check.

And you put these two things together that work hand in hand and you will know.

So, resonance.

I am going to sing a note, a high note.

Now, that note is in my head voice or is it mixed?

I don't know.

And I'm going to get more powerful with this note.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH If as I inject more support into this high note and I start to crack, I am not in mixed voice.

I am in a powerful, supported head voice.

But the positioning of our vocal cords in head voice cannot take the power of support like mixed voice can.

So if you're singing a high note and you're wondering if you're in mix or in just regular head voice, give it some more support and see what happens.

You can do this in a lot of places as long as you're pretty sure you're not in chest voice.

So I'm going to go AHHHHHHHHHHHHH That's a pretty cool sounding head voice note or high note.

Okay, let's try.

It's not mixed voice.

When you've got things placed correctly, yes, our second check, the placement check, you can give those high notes more support and they don't break.

They get more brash and more powerful.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Or AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH There, I actually started in head voice and then changed my placement so that I could resonate in mixed voice.

So here's our placement test.

We're going to be super forward in a chest voice note.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHH We're going to feel the vibrations in our face. That's kind of a belt, right? Then we're going to practice bringing the placement of that note back.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Feel it vibrating and yes, resonating in the- this area.

Not so much in this area.

Here we brought the resonance back.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH That's going to help us initiate this sort of crying or whining sound which we can't do really when we're bringing our placement forward.

Notice how it's thinner sounding but it's still loud and brash?

Now, as I've got that placement the reason I was cracking before is because I was still working on dialing in that placement between forward and back.

But when I get that placement right AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHH As I add more support, it doesn't crack, it becomes brasher and louder.

So, two checks.

The first we're calling our resonance check.

Head voice!

Am I in head voice or mixed voice?

If I push harder UUUHHHHHH and I crack, I am not in mixed voice.

But if I push harder, and I don't crack I am in mixed voice.

でも、もっと強くプッシュして、ひびが入らなければ、複雑な声になってしまう。

And I can feel out how to place my voice by moving it forward and backward and when I get it back to the point I can add more juice from my support and not crack, I have found my alignment for mixed voice.

UUUHHHHHHH UUAAAAHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Now for fun, listen to my lead vocal from the sample I sang at the very beginning and listen for how I'm moving my placement around, forward to back as well as switching resonances, chest to head and you will hear obvious differences between head voice and mixed voice based on placement.
