And today I'm going to teach you how to find it.

So do you get frustrated every time you try and sing a high note and all you can do is push or strain or sing in falsetto?

Then you need the secret sauce of singing.

By the end of this video, you'll have three ways to find your mixed voice.

I have to admit, humble brag, that teaching mix is my specialty.

How to find their mixed voice, which is also sometimes called mixed voice.

Well, what does mix mean?

ミックスってどういう意味？

Let's think of it like colors.

色のように考えてみよう。

Hey, you know what?

なあ、知ってるか？

Can you paint me a picture?

絵を描いてくれる？

And you know what?

そして、何を知っている？

I love red, but you know what even more is blue, but you know what I love the most is the mix of red and blue, which is.

Yeah, I had to think about that too.

Yes.

Good old purple.

So if we carry this analogy over into singing, let's pretend that the lower register, your chest voice is red.

And let's pretend that the upper register or head voice is blue.

そして、高音域やヘッドボイスが青いと仮定しよう。

Which means that when we mix them together, we get purple.

No mix.

So for myself, when I sing in chest voice, I feel more vibrations in my chest and my mouth.

It also feels deeper and more like my speaking voice.

Whereas when I sing with my head voice, it feels like it lifts up more towards my head.

It also has more of a floating kind of a quality that feels quite easy.

When I sing with mix voice, I feel some chesty and heady sensations at the same time.

It also sounds like a blend of those two qualities.

So my mix voice has some of the depth of my chest voice.

But it feels lighter and easier than pushed up chest voice.

Hey, it also has some of the ease and brilliance of my head voice, but it's definitely fuller and boomier than just pure head.

It sounds and feels like what my speaking voice would be if I just kept speaking up into a higher range.

Kind of like when I laugh.

How does mix voice work?

ミックスボイスの仕組みは？

Well, I don't want to get too nerdy here, but basically for your vocal folds to be able to sing higher pitches, they have to stretch and thin out.

まあ、ここではあまりマニアックなことは言いたくないが、基本的に声帯が高い音程を歌えるようになるには、声帯が伸びて薄くなる必要がある。

Now, if I allow them to stretch to the thinnest possible setting, that's falsetto and shameless plug.

So your vocal cords have to thin and stretch for high notes.

That means they have to get shorter and fatter for low notes, which is what your chest voice is.

So for mix voice, the vocal folds do have to stretch to get to that pitch similar to falsetto.

But in the process, they also thicken up a little bit more than falsetto similar to chest voice.

And so we end up with this combination of thinness and thickness that gives us mix voice.

Three ways to find your mix voice.

Oh, hey.

Number one, the lip trill.

So pick up your cheeks just right here and then as if it's kind of cold outside, say it's freezing.

That's a lip trill.

Now take that and say In that middle part of that inflection, I'm starting to go into my mix voice.

And for you ladies, that'll have to be a little bit higher.

That upper area is mix.

It's not chest voice and it's not falsetto.

Number two, the hey greeting.

Oh, hey.

Right there, I started speaking in my mix voice and then inflected back down into my chest voice.

Now notice this is a friendly greeting.

It's not, hey, you kids get off my lawn.

That would be the hey threat and that's pushing up chest voice.

That would be like shouting.

Number three, the Fargo.

Oh, oh, you don't say, do you?

If you've seen the movie Fargo, you know that the citizens of Fargo, at least in the movie, have a very particular way of saying their O's.

Notice I'm starting in my chest voice and I'm inflecting up into a mix voice area.

It's not, oh, falsetto.

Now, if you're from Fargo and you are highly offended by this, I'm from Canada.

Now to do this, stick out your lips like you're doing your best Mick Jagger impersonation.

And then move up into the higher part of your voice without getting any louder.

So now you know what mix voice is and you know three ways to find it.
