The weather today is not normal.

今日の天気は普通じゃない。

It is November 25th and it is 10 degrees Celsius out here.

11月25日、気温は10度だ。

In fact, if I was to choose an English word to describe this weather, I would choose the word bizarre.

実際、この天気を表す英単語を選ぶとしたら、私は奇妙という言葉を選ぶだろう。

The weather is bizarre for this time of year.

この時期にしては異様な天候だ。

Normally it's minus one and maybe snowing a little bit, but definitely this weather is bizarre.

いつもはマイナス1度で、雪が少し降るくらいなのに、この天気は間違いなく異様だ。

When you use the word bizarre to describe something that's not normal, you're really emphasizing that it's really not normal.

普通でないことを表現するのに奇抜という言葉を使うと、それが本当に普通でないことを強調していることになる。

So anyways, welcome to this English lesson.

とにかく、この英語レッスンにようこそ。

Let's go a few places and let's look at a few more things that are not normal, and I'll teach you some words and phrases you can use to describe them.

もう少し場所を移動して、普通でないものを見てみよう。それらを説明するのに使える言葉やフレーズを教えよう。

So sometimes in English we simply use the word odd to describe something that isn't how it normally is.

だから英語では、普通とは違うことを表現するのに単にoddという言葉を使うことがある。

Now it's pretty normal to have Christmas displays set up in town, but what I find odd about this Christmas display is how early it was set up.

街中にクリスマス・ディスプレイが設置されるのはごく普通のことだが、このクリスマス・ディスプレイについて私が奇妙に思うのは、設置があまりにも早かったことだ。

For me, I think that Christmas displays should be set up around December 1st.

私としては、クリスマス・ディスプレイは12月1日頃に設置されるべきだと思う。

I don't feel like they should be here at the beginning of November.

11月の初めにここにいるべきとは思えない。

To me, the timing is a little bit odd.

私にとっては、このタイミングは少し奇妙だ。

For me, a normal time to set up a Christmas display would be December 1st.

私にとっては、クリスマス・ディスプレイを設置する通常の時期は12月1日だ。

That sounds like a good time.

楽しそうだね。

Christmas is December 25th.

クリスマスは12月25日だ。

Let's wait until December 1st.

12月1日まで待とう。

So maybe it's just me, maybe everyone else in the world loves it, but for me, setting up Christmas displays before December 1st seems a little odd.

だから僕だけかもしれないし、世界中のみんなが好きなのかもしれないけれど、僕にとっては12月1日より前にクリスマスのディスプレイをするのはちょっと変な感じがする。

A little bit not normal.

ちょっと普通じゃない。

Sometimes in English we just use the word unusual.

英語では単にunusualという言葉を使うこともある。

It's unusual to see people eating ice cream cones in November in Ontario, Canada.

カナダのオンタリオ州で11月にアイスクリーム・コーンを食べている人を見かけるのは珍しい。

Usually we eat ice cream in the warmer months, in June, July, August, and even in September.

通常、アイスクリームは6月、7月、8月、そして9月の暖かい季節に食べる。

But I thought I would get an ice cream cone today, even though this is kind of unusual for this time of year.

でも、この時期にしては珍しいことだけど、今日はアイスクリームを食べようと思ったんだ。

So again, when you're talking about something that's not normal in English, you can use the word unusual.

だから、英語では普通ではないことについて話すときは、unusualという言葉を使うことができる。

So sometimes in English we put the word odd and the word unusual together, and we say that something is odd and unusual.

だから英語では、oddとunusualを一緒にして、何かが奇妙で珍しいと言うことがある。

These houses behind me are a little bit odd and unusual.

私の後ろにある家々は、ちょっと変わっていて珍しい。

In Ontario, Canada, we don't often paint our houses with vibrant colors like this.

カナダのオンタリオ州では、このように鮮やかな色で家を塗ることはあまりない。

These are really, really cool.

これらは本当に、本当にクールだ。

And by the way, if you wanted to buy one, I think this one is for sale.

ちなみに、もし買いたいなら、これは売り物だと思う。

So sometimes we say something is odd and unusual.

だから私たちは時々、何かが奇妙で珍しいと言う。

We put the two words together.

私たちはこの2つの言葉を組み合わせた。

I'm going to show you a few more of these.

I think what I like the most about these odd and unusual houses is how the colors are very, very vibrant.

私がこのような奇妙で珍しい家で一番好きなのは、色がとてもとても鮮やかなことだ。

I think I mentioned that already.

それはもう言ったと思う。

Even the fence in front of this house, the house itself is a cool green.

この家の前のフェンスも、家自体も涼しげなグリーンだ。

This one behind me is yellow and purple mixed together.

これは黄色と紫が混ざっている。

So just very, very cool.

だからとてもクールなんだ。

Kind of odd and unusual.

ちょっと奇妙で珍しい。

And it doesn't have to be a negative thing.

そして、それはネガティブなことである必要はない。

Some people really like odd and unusual things.

変わったものが好きな人もいる。

I think sometimes my English lessons are a little bit odd and unusual, but you guys seem to like them.

私の英語のレッスンは、ちょっと変わっていて、変わっていることもあると思うのですが、みなさんは気に入ってくれているようですね。

So sometimes we put those two words together to describe something and say it's odd and unusual.

だから私たちは時々、この2つの言葉を組み合わせて何かを表現し、奇妙で珍しいと言う。

Sometimes you see something and you just think, that's weird.

何かを見て、これは変だと思うことがある。

It's not what you expect to see.

期待するものとは違う。

You're like, oh, that's weird.

ああ、変だな、と。

That's a little bit weird.

ちょっと変だね。

I'm going to show you something that I think is a little bit weird.

ちょっと奇妙だと思うことをお見せしよう。

If you look over here, there is a spot where you can charge an electric vehicle.

こっちを見ると、電気自動車を充電できる場所がある。

But what's kind of weird is it's in an alley, so you can, I'm not even sure how you would get your car into this little spot.

でも、ちょっと変なのは、路地にあるので、どうやってこの小さな場所に車を入れるのかさえわからない。

And then if you look over here, I don't even see a place where you can plug in your electric vehicle.

そして、こちらを見ても、電気自動車のプラグを差し込む場所すら見当たらない。

Like, normally there would be some sort of charging station.

普通なら充電ステーションがあるはずだ。

So whenever I see this, whenever I'm in this town and I walk by this area and I see this electric car charging area, I think, that's weird.

だから、この町にいてこの辺りを通るたびに、この電気自動車の充電エリアを見るたびに、変だなと思うんだ。

So I came to the town of Grimsby, Ontario today to make this English lesson and there's a lot more traffic than I expected.

今日、この英語のレッスンをするためにオンタリオ州のグリムスビーという町に来たんだけど、思ったより交通量が多いね。

I think this is a bit out of the ordinary.

これはちょっと普通ではないと思う。

It's one o'clock in the afternoon on a Monday.

月曜日の午後1時。

I didn't expect to see so many cars driving down the road.

こんなにたくさんの車が走っているとは思わなかった。

I think it's a little bit out of the ordinary.

ちょっと常軌を逸していると思う。

In English when we say something is out of the ordinary, it's different than how it normally is.

英語では、何かが普通でないことを「普通でない」と言う。

I would think that normally this town is very quiet on a Monday afternoon, that there is very little traffic, but it seems to me like there's almost a bit of a traffic jam.

月曜日の午後、この街はとても静かで、交通量も少ない。

If you look down the road, there's this huge row of cars.

道路を見下ろすと、車がずらりと並んでいる。

I know the cars aren't flying by really quickly, but I think this is definitely out of the ordinary.

クルマが本当に早く通り過ぎるわけではないのは知っているが、これは間違いなく普通ではないと思う。

I think normally on a Monday afternoon, it would be very quiet and there would be very little traffic.

通常、月曜日の午後はとても静かで、交通量も少ないと思う。

So behind me you can see our local hospital and I would say this, doctors and nurses work wacky hours.

私の後ろに地元の病院が見えますが、医師や看護師の勤務時間はとんでもないことになっています。

When you use the word wacky in English, you're describing something that is very abnormal.

英語でwackyという言葉を使うときは、非常に異常なことを表現している。

Did I teach the word abnormal yet?

異常という言葉はもう教えたかな？

Abnormal is the opposite of normal, but doctors and nurses work wacky hours.

アブノーマルはノーマルの反対だが、医師や看護師はおかしな時間帯に働いている。

They work during the day, they work at night, they work in the evening, they work early in the morning.

日中も働くし、夜も、夕方も、早朝も働く。

Most people have normal hours.

ほとんどの人は普通の時間だ。

Most people work from 8 to 5 or 7 to 4 or if you have a long day, maybe 7 to 5.

たいていの人は8時から5時まで、あるいは7時から4時まで、長い日なら7時から5時まで働いている。

But doctors and nurses definitely work wacky hours.

しかし、医師や看護師は間違いなくおかしな時間帯に働いている。

By the way, we're getting a new hospital.

ところで、新しい病院ができるんだ。

They're slowly building a new hospital.

新しい病院を少しずつ建設している。

The old one is in front here and the new one is just, I bet you they're about halfway done, the new hospital.

旧病院はこの手前にあり、新病院はちょうど半分ほど完成したところだ。

It's pretty cool.

かなりクールだよ。

Then the doctors and nurses could work wacky hours in that hospital.

そうすれば、医師や看護師はその病院でおかしな時間働くことができる。

Sometimes we just say something is strange.

時には、ただ何かがおかしいと言うこともある。

If you look at this tree behind me, you can see that it has all of its leaves on it still.

私の後ろにあるこの木を見ると、まだ葉が全部ついているのがわかるだろう。

And that's a little bit strange for this time of year.

そして、この時期にしては少し奇妙だ。

Usually at this point in the fall, you don't see leaves on the trees.

通常、秋のこの時期には木々の葉は見られない。

Usually they're all on the ground.

普段はみんなグラウンドにいる。

Now if there's a lot of leaves on the ground, that's pretty normal.

地面に落ち葉がたくさんあれば、それはごく普通のことだ。

But it certainly is strange that this tree still has all its leaves.

しかし、この木がまだすべての葉を残しているのは確かに不思議だ。

It's also a bit strange that the lake doesn't have a little bit of ice on it yet.

湖にまだ少しも氷が張っていないのもちょっと不思議だ。

If we walk over here, we're by Lake Ontario.

ここを歩けばオンタリオ湖だ。

It's a little bit strange.

ちょっと不思議な感じだ。

Normally the lake isn't frozen over, but normally at this time of year, there's a little bit of ice along the shore.

普段は湖は凍っていないが、例年この時期は岸辺に少し氷が張る。

Just a tiny bit.

ほんの少しだ。

There's probably going to be people from this area who say there's never ice on the lake at this time in November.

11月のこの時期に湖に氷が張ることはない、と言うこの地域の人たちもいるだろう。

But for me, on November 25th, I think it's strange that there's not a little bit of ice there.

しかし、11月25日、そこに少しも氷がないのはおかしいと私は思う。

And it's definitely strange that that tree has all its leaves on it still.

それに、あの木がまだ葉を全部つけているのは確かに不思議だ。
