If someone has a bad attitude it means they think something's going to go badly before it even starts or even while it's happening.

誰かが悪い態度を持っているというのは、物事が始まる前から、あるいは進行中であっても、うまくいかないと考えていることを意味する。

Here's a good example.

良い例を挙げる。

Maybe you go to watch your favorite sports team and as the game is starting you say, ah, they're going to lose tonight because the best player is injured and the other team's too good.

例えば、お気に入りのスポーツチームの試合を見に行って、試合が始まるときに「ああ、今夜は負けるだろう、だって最高の選手が怪我をしていて、相手チームが強すぎるから」と言うとする。

That's just a bad attitude.

これが悪い態度だ。

It's not a very positive way of thinking to just say, oh, we're going to lose because of that.

そういう理由で「負けるだろう」と言うのは、あまり前向きな考え方ではない。

It's best to wait and see.

様子を見るのが一番だ。

Sometimes students have a bad attitude.

時々、学生たちが悪い態度を持っている。

They might say, oh, I'm going to fail this class because the teacher doesn't like me and there's too much homework and I don't feel like doing what I'm supposed to be doing.

「先生が私のことを嫌いだし、宿題が多すぎるし、やるべきことなのにやる気が起きないから、このクラスは落第するだろう」と言うかもしれない。

That's just a bad attitude.

これも悪い態度だ。

As you can tell, I don't like it when people have a bad attitude.

分かると思うが、私は人々が悪い態度を持っているのが好きではない。

I like it when people are a little more positive, when they have a positive attitude.

もっと前向きな人、前向きな態度を持っている人が好きだ。

Now you might have thought as I teach this phrase, as I teach the opposite, that I would say good attitude.

この言葉を教えるとき、反対の言葉として「good attitude（良い態度）」を教えると思ったかもしれない。

And we do sometimes say that, that, oh, you should have a good attitude.

確かに時々「良い態度を持つべきだ」と言うことはある。

But often, more often we say a positive attitude.

でも、より頻繁に「positive attitude（前向きな態度）」と言う。

I'm not sure why we don't say negative attitude, but we usually encourage people to have a positive attitude.

なぜ「negative attitude（否定的な態度）」と言わないのかはよく分からないが、通常は人々に前向きな態度を持つよう促す。

Even though the best player is injured, I still think my team is going to win tonight.

最高の選手が怪我をしていても、私のチームは今夜勝つと思う。

I'm going to have a positive attitude.

前向きな態度を持とう。

I'm going to think happy thoughts and good thoughts about my team.

チームについて幸せで良い考えを持とう。

I was going to say something else about this.

他にも言おうと思っていたことがある。

Good attitude, positive attitude.

良い態度、前向きな態度。

There's another term.

他の用語もある。

Maybe I'll think of it later.

Anyways, to review, a bad attitude would be to say something like this, oh, I don't know if I'm going to make an English lesson today.

復習すると、悪い態度とはこういうことだ、「今日は英語のレッスンを作れるかどうか分からない。」

Hardly anyone's going to watch it.

ほとんど誰も見ないだろう。

Maybe I'll just not do it.

やめておこうかな。

That's a bad attitude.

これが悪い態度だ。

But a positive attitude would be to think, you know, I'm going to make an English lesson today and some people will watch it and those people will hopefully learn a little bit of English.

でも前向きな態度なら、こう考える、「今日は英語のレッスンを作ろう、何人かは見てくれて、その人たちが少しでも英語を学んでくれたらいいな」と。

But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video.

So I taught the phrase more or less in the last lesson and my response, not at all.

前回のレッスンでこの言葉を教えたが、私の答えは「全くそんなことはない」。

Almost every phrase I choose for these lessons is from real life and I heard someone use it just four days ago.

このレッスンで選ぶほとんどの言葉は実生活から来ていて、4日前に誰かが使うのを聞いた。

So no, not at all.

だから、全くそんなことはない。

In fact, I did a little bit of research.

実際、少し調べてみた。

I'm not sure if you know what Google Trends is, but Google Trends kind of identifies the things people search for.

Google Trendsを知っているかどうか分からないが、Google Trendsは人々が検索する内容を識別する。

And if you look in a moment, probably right now, there should be a graph on the screen for the phrase more or less.

すぐに、おそらく今、画面に「more or less」というフレーズのグラフが表示されているはずだ。

And you can see it's actually going up.

実際に上昇しているのが分かる。

Now this doesn't mean people are actually using it when they talk.

これは人々が実際に話すときに使っているということではない。

It simply means people do still search for that phrase more or less.

単に人々がまだ「more or less」というフレーズを検索しているということだ。

So to me, that graph probably means that people are still using that term.

私にとって、このグラフは人々がまだこの用語を使っているということを示している。

And then Emerson as well, just so you know, yes, I do listen as I go through my day and I try to hear people using phrases and or sometimes I observe behavior and that helps me decide what I'm going to say or what I'm going to teach in the next lesson.

So you might wonder, where did bad attitude and positive attitude come from?

Well, I want to keep that a secret, but as you know, I'm a teacher.

Sometimes I see students in my classroom and sometimes they have a bad attitude and sometimes they have a really positive attitude and it can make all the difference as to how well they learn what I am teaching.

教室で学生たちを見ていると、時には悪い態度を持っている学生もいれば、とても前向きな態度を持っている学生もいて、それが私の教えていることをどれだけ良く学べるかの違いになることがある。

Sometimes a good positive attitude goes a long way and sometimes a bad attitude can just be, yeah, like the worst thing in the world.

良い前向きな態度は大きな違いを生み、悪い態度は、そう、世界で最悪のものになりうる。

You know, positive energy really, really helps and if you have a bad attitude, man, it's like you're not helping yourself at all.

前向きなエネルギーは本当に、本当に役立つ、そして悪い態度を持っていると、全く自分の助けにならない。
