If someone has a bad attitude it means they think something's going to go badly before it even starts or even while it's happening.

態度が悪いということは、何かが始まる前から、あるいは起きている最中から、悪い方向に進むと思っているということだ。

Here's a good example.

いい例がある。

Maybe you go to watch your favorite sports team and as the game is starting you say, ah, they're going to lose tonight because the best player is injured and the other team's too good.

お気に入りのスポーツチームを観戦しに行き、試合が始まると、ああ、今夜は負けるんだろうな、と思う。

That's just a bad attitude.

それは態度が悪いだけだ。

It's not a very positive way of thinking to just say, oh, we're going to lose because of that.

だから負けるんだ、というのはあまり前向きな考え方ではない。

It's best to wait and see.

様子を見るのが一番だ。

Sometimes students have a bad attitude.

生徒の態度が悪いこともある。

They might say, oh, I'm going to fail this class because the teacher doesn't like me and there's too much homework and I don't feel like doing what I'm supposed to be doing.

先生に嫌われて、宿題が多すぎて、やるべきことをやる気が起きないから、このクラスは落第しそうだ、と言うかもしれない。

That's just a bad attitude.

それは態度が悪いだけだ。

As you can tell, I don't like it when people have a bad attitude.

お分かりのように、私は人の態度が悪いのが嫌いなんだ。

I like it when people are a little more positive, when they have a positive attitude.

私は、人々がもう少し前向きで、前向きな姿勢を持っているときが好きだ。

Now you might have thought as I teach this phrase, as I teach the opposite, that I would say good attitude.

さて、このフレーズを教えながら、その反対を教えながら、私は良い姿勢と言うのだろうと思ったかもしれない。

And we do sometimes say that, that, oh, you should have a good attitude.

そして、私たちは時々、ああ、いい態度を取るべきだ、と言う。

But often, more often we say a positive attitude.

しかし、多くの場合、私たちは前向きな姿勢を口にする。

I'm not sure why we don't say negative attitude, but we usually encourage people to have a positive attitude.

Even though the best player is injured, I still think my team is going to win tonight.

I'm going to think happy thoughts and good thoughts about my team.

チームのことをハッピーに考え、良いことを考えるつもりだ。

There's another term.

別の言葉もある。

Anyways, to review, a bad attitude would be to say something like this, oh, I don't know if I'm going to make an English lesson today.

Hardly anyone's going to watch it.

ほとんど誰も見ないだろう。

Maybe I'll just not do it.

That's a bad attitude.

But a positive attitude would be to think, you know, I'm going to make an English lesson today and some people will watch it and those people will hopefully learn a little bit of English.

But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video.

Almost every phrase I choose for these lessons is from real life and I heard someone use it just four days ago.

このレッスンのために私が選んだフレーズは、ほとんどすべて実生活で使われたもので、つい4日前に誰かが使っているのを聞いたばかりだ。

So no, not at all.

だから、そんなことはない。

In fact, I did a little bit of research.

実は少し調べてみたんだ。

I'm not sure if you know what Google Trends is, but Google Trends kind of identifies the things people search for.

グーグル・トレンドをご存じかどうかわかりませんが、グーグル・トレンドは人々が検索するものを特定するものです。

And if you look in a moment, probably right now, there should be a graph on the screen for the phrase more or less.

そして、しばらくすると、おそらく今すぐにでも、画面に多かれ少なかれこのフレーズのグラフが表示されるはずだ。

And you can see it's actually going up.

そして、実際に上昇しているのがわかるだろう。

Now this doesn't mean people are actually using it when they talk.

だからといって、人々が実際にそれを使って話しているわけではない。

It simply means people do still search for that phrase more or less.

つまり、多かれ少なかれ、人々はまだそのフレーズを検索しているということだ。

So to me, that graph probably means that people are still using that term.

つまり、このグラフは、人々がまだこの言葉を使い続けていることを意味しているのだろう。

And then Emerson as well, just so you know, yes, I do listen as I go through my day and I try to hear people using phrases and or sometimes I observe behavior and that helps me decide what I'm going to say or what I'm going to teach in the next lesson.

そして、エマソンもそうなんだ。そう、一日を過ごす中で耳を傾けて、人々が使っているフレーズを聞いたり、時には行動を観察したりして、次のレッスンで何を話すか、何を教えるかを決める参考にしているんだ。

So you might wonder, where did bad attitude and positive attitude come from?

Well, I want to keep that a secret, but as you know, I'm a teacher.

Sometimes I see students in my classroom and sometimes they have a bad attitude and sometimes they have a really positive attitude and it can make all the difference as to how well they learn what I am teaching.

Sometimes a good positive attitude goes a long way and sometimes a bad attitude can just be, yeah, like the worst thing in the world.

良い前向きな態度が長い道のりを歩むこともあれば、悪い態度がただ、そう、この世で最悪のことのようになることもある。

You know, positive energy really, really helps and if you have a bad attitude, man, it's like you're not helping yourself at all.
