This is a story about a tortoise.

これは亀の話だ。

He had everything a tortoise could want.

カメが欲しがるものはすべて持っていた。

He had a lovely log to sit on, juice apples to eat, and a very shiny shell.

彼は素敵な丸太の上に座り、ジュースのリンゴを食べ、とても光沢のある甲羅を持っていた。

But he wasn't happy.

しかし、彼は満足していなかった。

All day long he saw an eagle in the sky, flying low, flying high.

一日中、彼は空で鷲を見た。

It had golden feathers and great big wings.

金色の羽と大きな翼を持っていた。

I wish I could fly, said the tortoise.

飛べたらいいのに、と亀が言った。

He climbed onto a rock, jumped into the air, and flopped onto his belly.

彼は岩の上に登り、空中にジャンプして腹ばいになった。

He climbed up a tree, jumped into the air, and landed splat in a puddle.

彼は木に登り、空中に飛び上がり、水たまりにポチャンと着地した。

He called to the eagle.

彼はワシに呼びかけた。

Will you take me into the sky?

私を空に連れて行ってくれる？

I want to be like you.

あなたのようになりたい。

What will you give me, the eagle replied.

鷲は答えた。

You can have my log and my apples.

僕のログとリンゴをあげるよ。

Very well, said the eagle.

なるほど、と鷲は言った。

I will take you into the sky.

私はあなたを空に連れて行く。

Up and up the eagle rose, up through the clouds to the bright blue sky.

鷲は雲を突き抜けて真っ青な空へと昇っていった。

Hold on.

ちょっと待ってくれ。

The tortoise looked at the ground.

亀は地面を見た。

It was a very long way down.

とても長い道のりだった。

He felt dizzy.

めまいがした。

Eagle, he said, I don't like it up here.

イーグル、彼は言った。

Please take me back.

どうか私を連れ戻してください。

So the eagle took the tortoise back to the ground.

そこで鷲は亀を地上に連れ帰った。

Little tortoise, said the eagle, you have no feathers and no wings.

小さな亀よ、お前には羽も翼もない。

You are not made for flying.

あなたは飛ぶようにはできていない。

Keep your apples and your log.

リンゴと日誌を大切に。

Be happy.

幸せであれ。

The tortoise smiled.

亀は微笑んだ。

He watched the eagle go.

彼は鷲が去っていくのを見送った。

He ate his apples, he sat on his log, and he no longer wanted to fly.

リンゴを食べ、丸太の上に座り、もう飛びたいとは思わなかった。
