Cute, cute, and more cute.

かわいい、かわいい、もっとかわいい。

And lately, one particular character has skyrocketed through Japan's kawaii economy.

そして最近、あるキャラクターが日本のかわいいの経済を急上昇させている。

One special cutie that rises above the rest.

他を圧倒する特別なかわいさ。

Literally.

文字通りだ。

So, who is this master of cute?

では、このかわいいの達人は誰なのか？

This champion of kawaii?

かわいいのチャンピオン？

Oh, hello there!

ああ、こんにちは！

I'm Tim, and welcome to a new chapter of Tim in Japan, where I explain some of the finer points of Japanese culture.

ティムです。「ティム・イン・ジャパン」の新章へようこそ。ここでは日本文化の細かな点について説明するよ。

In today's episode, we'll take a closer look at Japan's latest, cutest obsession, Chikawa.

今日のエピソードでは、日本の最新で、最もキュートで、みんなが夢中になっている「ちいかわ」について詳しく見ていこう。

While relatively unknown in the western world, Chikawa has rapidly risen through the ranks of Asia's competitive cute mascot culture.

欧米では比較的無名だが、ちいかわはアジアのかわいいマスコット文化の中で急速に台頭してきた。

And so now you're probably wondering, what exactly is Chikawa?

ちいかわとは一体何なのか？

And what propelled such a meteoric rise to the top?

何がこのような急成長を促したのか？

Well, this is Chikawa.

この子がちいかわ。

A funny, relatable, cute little something or other.

面白くて、親近感があって、ちょっとかわいい、そんな作品。

Perhaps best described by the Japanese tagline, which roughly translates to, something small and cute.

日本のキャッチフレーズで最もよく表現されているのは、大雑把に訳せば「なんか小さくてかわいいやつ」だろう。

Chikawa is actually a Japanese portmanteau, a combination of the two separate words, chiisai, meaning small, and kawaii, meaning cute.

ちいかわとは、小さいという意味と、かわいいという意味を組み合わせた造語である。

Put them together and you get Chikawa.

この2人を合わせると、ちいかわになる。

Both Chikawa's gender and species remain unknown, and these are Chikawa's best friends, Hachiware and Usagi.

ちいかわの性別も種族も不明のままであり、ちいかわの親友であるハチワレとウサギである。

And of course, there's a whole cast of other buddies to round out the crew.

もちろん、他の仲間たちも大勢いる。

So who created this kawaii phenomenon?

では、誰がこのかわいいの現象を生み出したのか？

A somewhat mysterious Japanese author and illustrator by the pen name, Nagano.

ナガノというペンネームの、ちょっと不思議な日本人作家兼イラストレーター。

While originally famous for a cute series of line stickers titled, Joke Bear, one fateful tweet would change everything.

もともとは「ジョーク・ベア」というタイトルのかわいいラインステッカーのシリーズで有名だったが、ある運命的なツイートがすべてを変えることになる。

This unassuming little comic strip would unwittingly begin a chain reaction that would dramatically alter the landscape of Japan's merchandising forever.

この何気ない小さな漫画が、知らず知らずのうちに連鎖反応を起こし、日本の商品化計画の風景を一変させることになる。

And don't just take my word for it, here is the product director of Kiddyland, one of Tokyo's premier toy and collectible stores.

私の言葉を鵜呑みにしないでほしい。この方が東京でも有数の玩具・コレクターショップ、キデイランドのプロダクト・ディレクターだ。

(Speaking in Japanese) Chiikawa's sales forecast for fiscal 2023 is double that of fiscal 2022.

「2023年度の見込みは、2022年度の倍ですね」

I've been in this industry for 30 years, but I've never seen a character like this.

「30数年働いてるんですけど、こんなキャラクターは見たことないですね」

From Twitter comic to serialized manga to full-on anime adaptation, along with endless amounts of sponsorships, branded tie-ins, and sold-out goods along the way, Chikawa's journey feels like it's only just getting started.

ツイッターコミックから連載漫画、そして本格的なアニメ化まで、そしてその道中には数え切れないほどのスポンサー、ブランドとのタイアップ、完売グッズなどがあり、チカワの旅はまだ始まったばかりという感じだ。

Stories are generally self-contained vignettes, about a page long or a quick 40-second episode, though there are running plot lines that span multiple chapters.

ストーリーは通常、1ページ程度の自己完結型の小話か、40秒程度の短いエピソードだが、複数の章にまたがる筋書きもある。

Generally shy and reserved in nature, Chikawa lives in a magical land where delicious foods appear out of nowhere, and pudding companies give away hot pot sets and residential housing.

内気で控えめな性格のちいかわは、どこからともなく美味しいものが現れ、プリン会社が鍋セットや住宅をプレゼントする不思議な土地に住んでいる。

But it's not all roses.

しかし、全てが順調なわけではない。

They have to work hard to earn a salary, whether that's weeding, putting stickers on fruit, or fighting off gigantic bugs with a pointy stick.

草むしりをしたり、果物にシールを貼ったり、先のとがった棒で巨大な虫を撃退したりと、給料を得るために懸命に働かなければならない。

Yes, life in Chikawaland is a mixed bag, but that's what makes it relatable and heartfelt.

確かにちいかわの世界での生活は複雑だが、だからこそ親しみやすく、心に響くのだ。

And so maybe now you're thinking, okay, this is just another kid's toy, right?

それで、もしかしたら今、これってただの子供のおもちゃだよね？と思っているかもしれない。

Another cute little buddy for children to covet.

子供たちが欲しがるかわいい相棒がまた一人増えた。

What's the big deal?

何を大騒ぎしているんだ？

And I'd say, you're about half right.

そして、その半分くらいは正しいと思う。

While Chikawa is indeed popular with the Japanese youth, the core marketable audience is actually the adult population.

ちいかわは確かに日本の若者に人気があるが、市場の中心は実は成人層である。

Billions and billions of yen, this adorable little creature has become a significant cog in Japan's economy.

この愛らしい生き物は、何十億円、何百億円という規模で、日本経済の重要な歯車となっている。

For example, take a look at this special magical Chikawa collaboration.

例えば、この特別なマジカル・ちいかわコラボレーションを見てみよう。

Upon release, customers queued for hours, just for a 1 in 20 chance to purchase some of the limited time merchandise.

発売と同時に、20分の1の確率で期間限定商品を購入できるとあって、何時間も行列ができた。

And it doesn't stop there.

それだけにとどまらない。

Handheld consoles, regional keychains, educational laptops, refrigerator buddies, an entire train-railway collaboration, even the voice actors have become bona fide child TV stars.

携帯ゲーム機、地域限定キーホルダー、教育用ノートパソコン、冷蔵庫の相棒、列車と鉄道のコラボレーション、さらには声優までもが、正真正銘の子供向けテレビスターとなった。

An entire YouTube subculture has spawned around Chikawa.

ユーチューブのサブカルチャー全体が、チカワを中心に生まれている。

Hundreds of millions of views about new merch, handmade crafts, fan-made episodes, edits, and parodies.

新しいグッズ、手作りの工芸品、ファンメイドのエピソード、編集、パロディに関する試聴回数が数億回に達している。

And whatever this is...

そして、これが何であれ...

And so now you're probably wondering, why?

そして今、あなたは不思議に思っていることだろう。

What is so special about this Chikawa?

このちいかわの何が特別なのか？

Especially in Japan, where around every corner it feels like there's another cute little mascot slinging some kind of unnecessary yet irresistible purchase.

特に日本では、角を曲がるたびにかわいいマスコットたちが、不必要だが魅力的な商品を売りつけているように感じる。

And so why Chikawa?

では、なぜちいかわなのか？

Why has this particular cutie captured the heart of an already kawaii nation?

なぜこのかわいい子が、すでにかわいいものが多い日本の国民の心を掴んだのか？

Well first, and most obviously, Chikawa is just too darn cute.

まず、何よりもちいかわがかわいすぎる。

(Speaking in Japanese) After all, it's just too cute, isn't it?

「いや、もうめちゃくちゃやっぱかわいいっすね」

If your grandchildren show an interest, try to remember what it was like. I want to be able to talk to them about it when they ask me.

「かわいいと思いますよ。（孫が）興味持ったらどんなのか覚えといて、声かけられたら喋れるようにはしときたい」

But there is another, deeper reason for the sudden surge in popularity.

しかし、突然の人気急上昇にはもうひとつ、深い理由がある。

Beyond Chikawa's surface-layer cuteness is a relatable struggle that has touched the hearts of millions of fans.

ちいかわの表面的なかわいらしさの向こう側には、何百万人ものファンの心を揺さぶる、親しみやすい葛藤がある。

(Speaking in Japanese) Feelings like, "I don't get rewarded even when I try hard," or when all of a sudden, a strange creature attacks you -

「頑張っても報われないみたいなところですとか、突然何かに襲われてとか」

Over the years, the harsh reality has become more and more like this, and I feel like the situation has only gotten worse.

「この何年間ですね、辛い現実っていうのが、状況も増してるってかなって思っていて、そういう中で、

But in the mindst of all that, [chiikawa] has happy endings and it's a lot of fun.

ハッピーエンドだったり楽しいものが当たり前みたいな、

Even though it seems like things are taken for granted, that's actually not the case.

なんかこうあったと思うんですけど、そうではない、

When I look at the show, I think there's an important "human touch" to it.

人間味があるなっていうのが見てて思ったりしました」

Yes, Chikawa is a small cute something or other.

そう、ちいかわはなんか小さくてかわいいやつだ。

Another Hello Kitty, another cute flavor of the month.

ハローキティ、ちいかわとは別のかわいいの流行。

But there is something markedly different about Chikawa.

しかし、ちいかわには明らかに違うところがある。

Looking past the magically full of relatable struggles, work is hard, unforgiving, and doesn't pay enough.

魔法のように共感を呼ぶ苦労を見ると、仕事は厳しく、容赦がなく、給料も十分ではない。

Life is weird.

人生は奇妙だ。

Strange, aggressive creatures attack at random intervals.

奇妙で攻撃的な化け物が不定期に襲ってくる。

They need to work hard jobs to afford their lifestyles, and they often experience failure and hardship.

彼らは自分たちのライフスタイルを維持するために過酷な労働を強いられ、しばしば失敗や苦難を経験する。

Yet despite it all, Chikawa never gives up, determined to keep on going.

しかし、それでもちいかわは決してあきらめず、前進し続ける決意を固めた。

This perseverance and dedication in the face of it all is what really seems to resonate with fans.

この忍耐と献身がファンの心に響くのだろう。

Life is hard, and it only seems to get more difficult.

人生は困難で、さらに困難が増すばかりだ。

We've all been there.

誰もが経験したことがある。

But perhaps knowing that someone so small and so cute goes through those very same struggles, seeing them face the same challenges and the inescapable ups and downs of life, perhaps this forges an empathetic bond with this fuzzy little friend, helping to ease a bit of our existential burden.

しかし、こんなに小さくて可愛い存在が、同じような苦労を経験し、同じような挑戦や避けられない人生のアップダウンに直面していると知ることで、このふわふわした小さな友達との共感的な絆が生まれ、それが私たちの存在の重荷を少し軽くするのかもしれない。

When even the cutest among us are out here struggling, it helps one feel a little bit less alone.

最も可愛い存在たちが苦労しているときでも、それを見ることで少しだけ私たちの孤独感が和らぐ。

And I think this really is the core message that gets through to people, to see a little reminder in everyday life that's not only remarkably cute, but also relatable and heartfelt.

日常生活の中にあるちょっとした気づきを、驚くほどかわいいだけでなく、親しみやすく、心に響くものにする。

An adorable little friend cheering you on, encouraging you to never give up through the darkest of times.

愛らしい小さな友人があなたを応援し、辛い時も決してあきらめないよう励ましてくれる。

I think this is what sets Chikawa apart, what reverberates in the hearts and minds of fans everywhere.

これがちいかわを際立たせ、ファンの心に響くのだと思う。

An adorable, relatable little fighter just trying their best to do right by friends and to live a good life, just like you and me.

可愛らしくて共感できる小さな戦士が、友達に対して正しくあろうと一生懸命に努力し、私たちと同じように良い人生を送ろうとしている。

Or maybe it really is because Chikawa is just too dang cute.

あるいは、ちいかわがあまりにもかわいいからかもしれない。

Either way, I've completely fallen in love and wouldn't blame you if you did too.

いずれにせよ、私は完全に恋に落ちた。

This video is but another stop on Chikawa's total global kawaii domination.
