They asked me specifically about perhaps, but I thought this was a great time to show you maybe as well.

Let's talk about maybe and perhaps.

Now first of all, you need to know that these are adverbs and we use both of them when we think that something is possible, but not 100% certain.

まず知っておいてほしいのは、これらは副詞であり、「可能性はあるが、100％確実ではない」と考えるときに使うということだ。

Now, although they both mean the same thing, maybe is more casual in tone is more conversational, and perhaps is more formal, more academic, maybe is more commonly used.

さて、どちらも同じ意味だが、maybeはよりカジュアルな口調で、より会話に近い。

Now the other difference is the sentence structure.

もうひとつの違いは文の構造だ。

Maybe we can use this at the beginning of a sentence.

これは文頭で使えるかもしれない。

So I could say, maybe I'll go to the party.

だから、パーティーには行くかもしれない。

Maybe I'll go to the party.

パーティーには行くよ。

So this is when it's possible, it's possible I'll go to the party, but it's not 100% sure.

だから、可能性があるのはこの時だ。パーティーに行く可能性はあるが、100％確実ではない。

So I'm between yes I'll go to the party and no I won't go to the party.

だから、パーティーに行くイエスと行かないノーの間なんだ。

I'm between them.

私はその間にいる。

Maybe I'll go to the party.

パーティーには行くよ。

Another example, let's say your friend says, Have you seen my phone?

別の例として、友人がこう言ったとしよう。

And you can reply back, and you could say, maybe you left it in the car.

そして、あなたは返事を返すことができる。

So here, your friend doesn't know 100% that you left it in the car.

つまり、この場合、あなたの友人は、あなたが車に置き忘れたことを100％知っているわけではない。

It's simply a possibility.

単なる可能性だ。

Maybe you were just in the car a short while ago, maybe you were just in the car.

もしかしたら、ちょっと前まで車に乗っていただけかもしれない。

Again, it's not 100% certain is just a possibility.

So your friend could say, maybe you left it in the car.

And notice that placement is at the beginning of the sentence.

Now we can also use maybe as a one word reply, which is very commonly used in conversations.

会話の中でよく使われる一言の返事として、maybeを使うこともできる。

So using our same example, your friend says, Have you seen my phone?

同じ例で、あなたの友人がこう言ったとしよう。

And then you could ask a question, you could say, Did you leave it in the car?

そして、あなたは質問することができる。

And then you could reply back and say, maybe, maybe.

そうしたら、たぶん、たぶん、と返事を返せばいい。

And of course, as a full sentence, that would be maybe I left it in the car.

It's possible.

I don't know 100%.

But it's possible.

Maybe I left it in the car, or simply, maybe.

Are you going to party tonight?

Maybe.

Maybe I'll go to the party tonight.

今夜のパーティーに行こうかな。

So remember, we have these two options for placement at the beginning of the sentence, or as a one word reply, which of course could be turned into a full sentence where maybe is at the beginning.

つまり、文頭に置くか、一言で返事をするか、この2つの選択肢があることを覚えておいてほしい。

Now let's take a look at some examples using perhaps, perhaps it means the exact same thing.

では、perhapsを使った例を見てみよう。perhapsはまったく同じ意味だ。

But remember, it's just more formal, and it's not as commonly used.

ただ、よりフォーマルで、一般的にはあまり使われないことを覚えておいてほしい。

There's one other difference, we can also use perhaps in the middle of a sentence as well.

もうひとつ違うのは、文の途中でもperhapsを使えることだ。

We can use it at the beginning, the middle and also a one word reply.

冒頭でも、中間でも、また一言返事でも使える。

So structurally, perhaps has more flexibility than maybe.

だから構造的には、もしかしたらよりも柔軟性があるかもしれない。

Now at the beginning of the sentence, I could say, perhaps I'll go to the party tonight.

さて、文頭で私はこう言うことができる。

Perhaps I'll go to the party.

たぶん、パーティーには行くよ。

Okay, same thing as maybe just it does sound more formal to me when I hear perhaps maybe is more common.

オーケー、maybeと同じことだ。ただ、maybeの方が一般的かもしれないと聞くと、私にはよりフォーマルな響きに聞こえる。

Again, as a one word reply.

またもや一言の返事である。

Are you going to the party tonight?

今夜のパーティーには行くの？

Perhaps.

おそらくね。

Perhaps I'll go to the party tonight.

たぶん、今夜のパーティーには行くよ。

Again, just a little more formal.

もう一度言うが、もう少しフォーマルだ。

Now here's something we can do with perhaps that we can't do with maybe, and that's to use it in the middle of a sentence.

ここで、maybeではできないことをperhapsでやってみよう。

And I could say, I'll perhaps go to the party tonight.

そして、今夜のパーティに行こうかとも言える。

I'll perhaps go to the party tonight.

今夜のパーティーには行くかもしれない。

So if you wanted to use maybe in that case, you would just need to change the placement and put it at the beginning and say, maybe I'll go to the party tonight.

だから、もしその場合にmaybeを使いたいのであれば、配置を変えて冒頭に置き、maybe I'll go to the party tonightと言えばいい。

To summarize, both maybe and perhaps have the same meaning is when something is possible but not 100%.

つまり、「可能性はあるが、100％ではない」という意味だ。

We can use maybe at the beginning or as a one word reply.

maybeは冒頭で使うこともできるし、一言で返すこともできる。

We can use perhaps at the beginning, the middle and a one word reply.

おそらく、冒頭、中間、そして一言の返答に使うことができるだろう。

Maybe is more conversational, more commonly used, and perhaps is more formal.

Maybeはより会話的で、より一般的に使われ、Perhapsはよりフォーマルである。

And now you know how to use maybe and perhaps.
